I never really read them but have heard things about them, and I was curious about some stuff, tell me if I'm right about this...

Luke got cloned and that clone is evil, but did Luke turn to the Dark Side at one point or was that the clone, or am I totally off?

Also what's the best Book to start with?

My buddy read Star Wars Legacy, he says it's OK. I saw Luke was in it as a force ghost so I have to support that.

Legacy takes place almost 100 years after the point that the books and comics that pick up from the movies have gotten to so far. Given that Luke is about 60 in those comics and books already, I'd say it's a pretty safe bet that he'd be dead by Legacy's time. Don't worry, Luke hasn't died in the "present-day" comics yet; he's currently the Grand Master of the New Jedi Order. But even if he does die, we already know he lives on as a Force ghost, so it's not that bad.

Are there any TPBs that have focus on Kyle Katarn? I know he's the Battle Master at the Academy, and on the Jedi Council in the present day continuity, right? Any trades showing his progression from the "JK: JA" game up to this point and his getting those positions?

they are all out of continuity but fun to read.i liked early clone wars until it got really bad with keeping things stright.

They're actually not all out of continuity. Lucas himself has endorsed lots of the EU as canon, and there's a boatload of EU stuff that's made canon by its inclusion in Leland Chee's Holocron, which is Lucas' in-house continuity tracker used for all Lucasarts/Lucasfilm projects.

I would love to know this as well. I know he's appeared in some New Jedi Order novels, but I don't really want to read Star Wars novels. He's also in one of the little vignettes in Star Wars Tales #21, and there are three illustrated novels called Dark Forces: Soldier for the Empire, Dark Forces: Rebel Agent, and Dark Forces: Jedi Knight that expand on and serve as the canonical accounts for the events in the games. Those are supposedly really hard to find, though, particularly the second one.

His Wookieepedia entry has a pretty comprehensive list of his appearances, but I haven't summoned up the patience to actually sort through it all and figure out which things I'd actually be willing to read.
