Canada is under attack

Apparently the gunman who made it inside the centre block of the Parliament buildings was shot by the sergeant at arms.

That has fairly serious implications, as it suggests the gunman got fairly deep into the building. It's like a gunman going into a city police station and having to be stopped by the chief or captain.

Thoughts are with the soldier who was killed.

This is going to be like Canada's Boston Bombing, in terms of, it's going to be a national day of fear/anxiety searching for these other shooters.

Hopefully the Canadian media handles it better.

My thoughts are with the soldier's family. Hopefully, they catch the other gunmen soon.

And I hope it's suicide by cop.

This very close to the recent attack on two soldiers the other day. Where they were run down by a car.

Heard of this while in my LCS this afternoon. :csad:

Malala Yousafzai was meant to be honored today in Canada all this seems too coincidental.

Picking on soldiers is a very bad idea. I've read that soliders are being targeted because of Canada's involvement in the fight against ISIS.

I hope our soldiers wipe these a-holes out, one by one.

"I didn't see him fire any shots, but I saw the sergeant-at-arms re-enter his office and reload before heading back out."

The globe and mail footage is pretty crazy.

If the killed suspect turns out to be on the CISIS terror list, I'm sure they'll be able to a draw connections, and come up with a detailed suspect list.

Sergeant at Arms Kevin Vickers possibly prevented a terrible outrage and a serious blow to the Anglosphere. If he isn't given a medal, medals don't mean anything.

There's going to be plenty of outrage in the coming days, that one guy with a rifle, who already shot someone outside, was able to cross over the entire Parliamentary lawn completely unmolested and get deep enough into centre block that he had to be stopped by almost literally the last line of defence.

Thinking that ISIS is behind this cowardes attack:
I say Amen to that.
I never thought Canada would be attacked. But I guess every western country is a target by now.

Hollands parlement isn't proetected good aswell. At the entrance only security withouth arms. Only "real" target have protection.
Time to change that..

First the nutjob idiot almost ran right into the Oval Office here in the White House (thank GOD, he wasn't an ISIS radical), and now this guy gets into the heart of Canada's Parliament.

So are there European/NA converts to Islam that don't convert for extremist reasons?

Obviously. Otherwise we would have a terrorist attack every hour. It's just the violent minority is very violent and loud.

So the first I heard of this today was when I was doing surveys at my job when I called a woman to remind her to send it back when she picked up the phone and screamed "Someone got shot on Parliament! ISIS IS HERE!" then slammed the phone down in my ear. Then they turned the news on in front of us so I got to watch coverage of it for the last four hours or so. :(

Well….. sounds like she loves being melodramatic as possible. While what she said is technically true, does anyone else hate it when people tell you about the news as sensational as possible? There are calmer ways to relay important events, then acting like you think the sky is falling.

Sure. Except not every extremist necessarily acts, there are probably people who sympathize with what terrorists do without participating themselves. What religion somebody identifies with and selects is a pretty fundamental and important part of someone's lifestyle, in the current political climate, what percentage of converts are not persuaded by powerful ideological elements?

This isn't Ali's day and age anymore, there seems to be something more to it than just adopting a different faith.

This isn't about Islam as a whole, I'm talking only about why certain Western adults choose Islam, a fair number within their own privileged and comfortable borders. It seems like it's got quite an appeal for people who perceive themselves disenfranchised or marginalized. The West has been in opposition to extremism for quite some time now, are some people converting to Islam arbitrarily and only because it's what their government or society has been most politically opposed to?

You make some fair points, even if I think they are a bit speculative. It does seem like the people most likely to get radicalized are those freshly introduced to the faith, and perhaps misunderstanding of it.

I think it is currently particularly salient, while Islam is often (unfairly) seen as synonymous with terrorist ideology. What would draw converts to it at the moment? Some may have searched deeply for its true, peaceful message. Others are likely to see it as a means of striking back at a society in which they have failed.

I see it as almost a gang mentality (except on an international scale). I'll bet the North American converts are losers, loners, and generally scoffed at by society. They don't fit in. So really, at the end of the day, your idea that they are striking back at society is probably spot on. I don't think these guys are religious extremists, I think they're just extremists.

You hit the nail on the head. Some use it the same way school-shootings use being bullied to justify their attacks; they exploit and misuse it as a justification for whatever heinous acts they may perpetrate for a society they feel alienated from and marginalized by.

I'm not even trying to be facetious CosmicPinchy, but you are pretty much describing a lot of our own ilk.
