Canada is under attack

What's that? Canadians? Hypesters? Comic nerds? You kind of lost me there, terry.

Nerds in general.

It's true of Christianity too in their zeal to "spread the word" or attempt to convert others almost always comes from those who are newly converted as opposed to those who were either raised in it or have long held the beliefs themselves.

There's a psychological need behind it but I can't think of the term used for it.

I suppose everyone feels at odds with the rest of the world sometimes. The difference, I suppose, is that your average nerd is not narcissistic enough to try to take violent retribution for perceived sleights.

I forget, but you're basically describing people who are insecure and emotionally needy. They need acceptance in order to feel a sense of validation. That acceptance can come in the form of a relationship, religion, cult, a militia, whatever. Basic psychology 101.

Yeah. I definitely don't think people who geek out about comics, or people who have a hard time finding acceptance in mainstream society, is the same as someone with such a profound identity crisis they cling to whatever outlet gives them unconditional acceptance and they can only find self-expression through violent and hostile acts.

Maybe it comes down to who gets to these guys first. Obviously, Islam and ISIS provided something that got the attention of these recent converts, but I don't believe that only ISIS had something to offer them. I'm not saying we need to cater to these people and talk them off the ledge, so to speak, but I do think we need a better awareness of the type of people that are vulnerable to brain washing and radicalization.

I brought up Christianity because it's almost exclusively looked at as a "Muslim problem" where there are plenty of Christian extremists out there who while they haven't done anything this extreme yet are still willing to go to war with whoever is offending them.

It all boils down to that need to be a part of a group and to have others in your group. Unfortunately religion of any sort is often used as a recruiting tool to those most vulnerable to manipulation.

That is why we have Muslim terrorist groups and we have "home grown" paramilitary groups who like to live in the woods and proclaim how the government is out to take their guns and rights away (Waco Texas and Ruby Ridge are two examples). Most of those right wing extremist groups utilize a twisted interpetation of the Bible much like these Muslim extremists twist the Koran.

There could also be other mitigating factors, like paranoid schitzophrenia or some other mental illness. Religious deification goes hand in hand with delusions of grandeur.

All religious extremism is bad, but you can't form an argument that Christian extremists are as dangerous as Islamic extremists based on something they haven't done yet. Christian extremists have been responsible for terrorist attacks, like abortion clinic bombings, and are definitely fuelled by hatred and resentment towards those who do not follow their doctrine, but overall they have not produced terrorism on the scale of Al Qaeda, ISIS and other radical Islamic groups. That's just a fact.

They have not produced terrorism via bombing but that does not mean that extremist Christian groups don't use other means to spread their particular brand of hate.

I think rather rustic Christianity of some groups is partly a symptom of their desire to withdraw from the modern world and to be left alone in their blinkered 17th century fantasy. On the whole, they seem to want to shut out rather than lash out. If their Islamic fundamentalist counterparts did the same, the world may be a safer place.

Wow! The very fact they got as far as they did raises big questions that will probably cause tighter security protocols.

Thankfully this ended quickly. Hopefully they catch any others who were involved. My thoughts and prayers are with Canada and the fallen Canadian solider.

Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins fans are standing and singing the Canadian national anthem tonight. The terrorists who thought this would weaken our collective resolve just **** themselves.

Thank you, hockey fans.

So the US is now on high alert after the attack.

Okay, this thread title would only work if someone invaded Canada. Like the Russians. Or America. Or maybe aliens.

In America we call this a slow news day.

That's horribly disrespectful.

I don't care if America has so much **** going on that an attack in the nation's capital wouldn't faze you, but here in Canada, where this kind of crap is not a daily occurrence, we're actually concerned about it.

Think before you post.
