Ritchie Wanted For "Cannonball" Remake

By Garth Franklin Wednesday October 19th 2011 08:04AM
Guy Ritchie is rumoured to be in talks for the remake of the classic 80's action-comedy "Cannonball Run" at Warner Bros. Pictures says The Associated Press.
Ritchie and his "Snatch" star Brad Pitt could be reunited on this new version on the 1981 film which followed a wide variety of eccentric competitors participating in a wild and illegal cross-country car race. Burt Reynolds, Roger Moore, Farrah Fawcett, Dom DeLuise, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. starred.
The new version would shift the action to Europe. Shawn Levy is also thought to have expressed an interest in directing the reboot with his "Night at the Museum" star Ben Stiller.

I watched THOSE DARING YOUNG MEN IN THEIR JAUNTY JALOPIES yesterday on FLIX.....that's CANNONBALL RUN in Europe set at the turn of the century before WWI.

With Ritche directing, I'm hoping for Jason Statham in Burt's role.

I do kind of miss the element of "fun" I used to experience going to films like this back in the day. Perhaps the industry will cycle back to it, like it did with 3D.

Aside: How many times did Burt Reynolds have a vehicular co-star?

Burt Reynolds and Roger Moore were big stars back then. I don't see how it will be possible to do the same today, getting two of the most popular male actors around for a cheesy car chase flic. The paychecks will be too high. And big movie stars may not have any interest in the project.
But I guess it will be interesting with Brad Pitt & Johnny Depp together.

Maybe they will use the same characters as last time, but set the story in the year the film will come out. Could Daniel Craig take over Moore's role? Or Pierce Brosnan maybe?

"I must warn you! I am Pierce Brosnan!" "Who?" :awesome:

On second thought, maybe Hugh Jackman or Jude Law would be more suited. Both of them can pull off lighter characters, and at least Jackman has the elegance required.

I don't know, I think you're being a little too close-minded or cynical about getting actors involved. Some are known for for not taking their status too seriously and can kick back and have some fun once in a while.

I'll watch it, I love any kind of car movie. The originals were great fun.

The movie that inspired the RL Cannonball Run, Two-Lane Blacktop, is actually a really great film and an important historical document of the famous Route 66.

Any kind of car movie?

:yay:

Guilty, watched it on Disney channel once and my wife had a 73 Super Beetle.

And what a shame about the Lohan. Girl was adorable at one time.

Normally, I tend to stay away from remakes, however I wouldn't mind seeing one for this one. It has potential to be an excellent movie if done right in all the right areas. For the role of Simon Goldfarb (Roger Moore's role) I'd cast either Pierce Brosnan or Daniel Craig.

This looks real good.I'll see this movie when it comes out.

I guess this isn't one of those classics that would be deemed blasphemy if it was remade, huh?

Hardly. Maybe Smokey and the Bandit, as all the principles would be tough to replace...although I'd still go see it.

According to the article linked below, GM Motors apparently wants to showcase it's upcoming lineup. Normally, I'm all for it, but I don't the new remake to only have vehicles from GM. I want it to have variety just like the original movie ranging from Camaros to Ferraris & everything else.

I could see George Clooney playing the Burt Reynolds part really well. And the Roger Moore part doesnt have to be Daniel Craig just because it was that way in the original. There is no history or origin set up for it. Personally I'd like to see the Roger Moore part played by Liam Neeson thinking he's British Royalty.

I'd like to see Jackie Chan cameo in this again or maybe even have a bigger side role. :D

One of my favourite movies. Definitely would like to see a modern version. Doesn't seem necessary to "remake" it per se, using the same characters. Just set it in modern days after the events of the original. Just have another Cannonball Run taking place.

The Cannonball Run is more or less an actual event these days....the Gumball 3000. Based loosely on the "other" Cannonball Run....The Gumball Rally. Plus, these days, Gumball is run almost exclusively in Europe instead of America. So you've got precedent.

Plus, there's lots of celebs who are already actively involved in the actual Gumball 3000, and there's plenty more celebs who just luh-huv their cars and would probably be willing to go pro bono (or take a pay cut, anyway) to do a fun, no-holds barred race film like this.

I think it's got lots of potential. I just hope the GM thing doesn't materialize --- the race needs European supercars, JDM tuners, and maybe a classic American muscle or three. Sure as hell don't need them showcasing the latest Camaro or Silverado or Pontiac Solstice, like the "exclusivity contract" with TF. American cars would be boring as hell.

I agree or they could have him replace Roger Moore except have him spoof The Transpoter. Depending on the cast I wouldn't mind seeing this. And I also wouldn't be to happy with nothing but GM vehicles being used. It may not be so bad if they use some classic GM cars but nothing but new cars or trucks just doesn't interrest me at all.

Liam Neeson is a very good suggestion :) I have another one - Hugo Weaving. Both of them will be perfect if the character will be similar to last time, a somewhat aged womanizer who has experienced a lot of adventures in his life.
Not so sure about the Clooney part, sorry to say. What about Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt or Johnny Depp?

I chose Clooney cuz he can pull off the playboy type but still make you like him. Never cared much for Cruise.

I just watched the original again last night for the first time in a few years. It's still an entertaining movie but I don't know how they will be able to recreate it.

I'd like to see them try it though.

Whoever gets the lead in this movie MUST grow a full mustache. That should be written into the contract.

What about Kevin Costner, Mel Gibson and Russell Crowe in different roles?

Does it need to be that similar to the original?
