The Dark Knight Capes and Cowls - New Batsuit Discussion Thread

Entirely subjective. What looks hideous to you may look cool to others.

I think that it looks intimidating as hell. Imagine being a thug at night time then have Batman swoop down on you in that suit? I'm just glad that he can turn his head finally, lol.

I don't like to nitpick over things like if the suit is too bulky, permawhite, etc. It ruins my movie experience and enjoyment for the film. I always go into a film with an open mind, especially an adaptation from any of my favorite comics.

Oh my gosh, hadn't thought of that.
Hey, I'm simply trying to look at the situation from a different perspective -- a more positive perspective.

Like I said on the previous page, my agenda is to try and understand the collective thinking behind the new Batsuit's design. People have whined for pages on end, so I'm merely trying to bring something new to the table.

I don't like the suit, so we both have something in common. But since I'm here, I may as well try my best to be remotely interesting.

The suit is neither as good as its biggest fans say, or as bad as its most ardent haters suggest. The legs, ceratinly, are poor, and I hope we don't spend too much time looking at them in the finished film. The chest and cowl look fine to me also, the cowl looking admittedly better in some shots than others. I definitely like the idea of a slimmer Batman, it reminds me of the Adams/Mazzuchelli Batmen, which brings a smile to my face. My main concern is the use of the cape - some iconic shots of Bats, head bowed, with the cape either fluttering in the breeze or curled around him, are necessary.

You seem to be saying that these things don't stand up to scrutiny.

I suppose I agree.

In that case, you resemble a member of the general public more than the typical nitpicky nerd on these boards. You, sir, are an anomaly on these boards, a welcome anomaly.

My objection to the chest is how absurdly thick it is. Obviously it is intended to resemble a huge set of pecs, but I think it looks a lot like a Rob Liefeld drawing. Like you, I prefer a Batman who looks like a martial artist/athlete rather than a weightlifter, but the layering of the chest seems to be undermine that theme.

The new bat suit is okay from what I have seen but I still would have liked the suit in the Dark Knight to be just a bit closer to the bat suit Michael Keaton wore.

But I am sure most would agree the suits from BB and TDK are leaps and bounds ahead of the suit Clooney wore as well as the sonar suit Kilmer wore in BM4E.

I am not too crazy about the bands in the suit's current incarnation but I think it is still kind of cool.

Everything is open to scrutiny. And everyone is entitled to analyze anything they want to. IMO, discussions like this open people's minds and/or increase knowledge about subjects.

I've just been through enough in my life to learn to scrutiny over things like that doesn't do anything but ruin the overall movie experience for me. That is one thing I really don't like to do is ruin a theater experience. There is still something magical about seeing a film on the silver screen that you thoroughly enjoy.

Not his point. Anything can be taken to pieces if subjected to enough scrutiny. Look, the suit isn't great, and god knows I'd prefer a permawhite Joker, but in the overall scheme of things I'm still very excited about this movie. I'm not going to come out of the film thinking 'Well, that was a well-acted movie, with a great script and plot, and involving characters, but GODDAMNIT! His suit looks like a jigsaw'. It just doesn't matter that much, in the end.

HAHA, I've been called an anomaly ever since my spinal cord injury four years ago. :cwink::woot: It's a nice term!

Of course. But these things do matter in the context of a discussion about the Batsuit, which is what this thread is.

You reall think that that picture bears comparison with this?

or, to be less extreme, this?

I don't.

Yes, I know, but he was talking about in the overall context of how it fits into the film. I'm not a great fan of the suit, but I accept it, and am moving on, same as with the permawhite.

A view of the whole suit does compare, yes, because the chest is inflated in a similar way.

I can look at the chest upwards of the suit without hissing now, but those damn legs will never gain favour with me.

As I was saying above, at most, to increase mobility and reduce ugly buckling, the needed to put gaps about wher I've highlighted in red. And just to make it fit in with the rest, they could have put other gaps where the blue is - i.e. along the muscles lines that were already there on the Begin suit. This is super rough, of course, I'm not saying this EXACT pattern, but it's more or less all they needed.

Gah, I've said it before, but I wish they'd just given the Begins suit the TDK treatment - left the shapes as they are but cut and separated them - with either the textured mesh of the TDK suit showing through , or the smooth-skin neoprene you can see on the inner legs here. All they needed to do was simplify the abdomenal area a bit and make the plates more in line with proper muscle shapes.

That at least would have looked like "regular" Batman and not "special suit" Batman, or "future" Batman.

Why did they throw the baby out with the bat(h)water?

Why don't we just put him in Crows colours, eh?:woot:

i still have to say that the newest pic is the best shot of the suit so far, IMO.

Was that crotch shot really necessary?

When we're specifically discussing his legs and how they attach to his body? Of course not! I could have given you a close-up of his elbow that explained the idea just as well, but I just love crotches.

Just for you though, I omitted the crotch entirely for this one :)

But seriously, and again, forgive the crudeness, and imagine there IS some kind of codpiece back in there, but the above, imagining the redded-out bits were gaps where some kind of cloth shows through, and that the thing was painted properly, is how I'd want a rubber batsuit to look, if it had to be rubber, more or less. Simple, organic, mobile.

And the same thing is more or less how I'd want an undersuit that would go under an outer layer of cloth to look. Either would be perfectly doable, and the former could easily have been a natural progression from the Begins suit, with the cloth-over-everything being a final evolution for a 3rd film perhaps.

You know, with that red gap where the codpiece would be, it almost looks like a smiley face with the red on the hips.

I think a smiley face should be a requirement of any good batsuit. That's where the film makers have yet again got it wrong. Except for that one bit where Keaton smiled - he got it.
