The Dark Knight Capes and Cowls - New Batsuit Discussion Thread

They would have chosen the designs they went for. There's nothing about any of the designs I and others have proposed that would be prohibitive to do - all the techniques have been used successfully in other costumes - superhero movies and others movies.

They just didn't want to.

Which I find really frustrating.

See, I kind of think that film makers of these movies - properties that are adapted from something else, are kind of obliged to be more faithful to respect the property and fans. Especially if they've been done several times before and not been faithful.

If we'd had 4 films already with perfect, faithful, high quality visual representations of these characters, I'd say "fine, bring on another interpretation, I'm sick of grey cloth and permawhite, creepy thin-faced Joker anyway". At WORST, I could say "hey, I don't like this but I have the old films and I can just leave these new ones to the people who don't mind the changes".

But I don't have the old films. They're hugely flawed in terms of faithful visual translations of the characters, and in other ways too.

This goes for pretty much every Superhero movie - some get it right, others don't. If they ever change the Spider-Man costume in movies, I won't really care, as long as it looks good, because I've had 3 films where they got it perfect. I wish I could say that for Batman.

I know that in reality the producers/owners of the property don't owe me anything, but I think they kind of do owe it to the character to get it completely right, at least for one live action series. Could be a TV series for all I care, but I want to see that character and his fictional universe on screen, NOT a significantly filtered interpretation. I don't think it's too much to ask for, I'm obviously just going to have to wait.

I agree completely. I see BTAS as the nearest thing we have had to a respectful translation of the comicbooks onto screen, but that was long ago, and it is a great shame that Batman isn't considered deserved of the same reverence as enjoyed by Spiderman, Iron Man and even Superman, to some extent.

Yeah, well, the reason I said live action is that it's one thing to do a cartoon faithfully - it's easy, it's no challenge visually, and it's not quite the same as seeing the characters really "for real". They're still drawings of the characters, not the characters themselves.

If you imagine that the fictional universe the comics take place in are real universes, I want films that seem - as much as is possible - as if they've sent an invisible camera INTO those actual worlds, not just re-staged everything in ours.

Not "what if these stories were real?", but "these stories ARE real, and we have the footage from Earth 2 to prove it!"

Did you take those pics? How long until the exhibit is up? I may visit.

You know what? There doesn't seem to be much room for doubt in those pics - the suit is grey. Because that cowl looks definitely, definitely blacker than the darkest rubber bits on the suit - in a way the Begins suit never did.

Same with the boots and gloves.

So why on earth couldn't they just have used the traditional colour scheme by sticking to one shade of grey (not 2) and making the symbol... AND neck AND forearms black?

And smooth out the suit so that there aren't so many hard edges and shadows causing sudden jumps in lightness, which make it hard to even tell that it IS grey?

Because it would make the hated fans happy.

Seeing the costume in person, I will give it credit for at least one thing-- comparing my own normal-lighting pics to promotional shots lit for darkness/drama/etc... the design of the suit makes it adapt to lighting very well. When it should be grey, it's grey. When it should be black, it's black. It's very much a tactical uniform designed for urban use. I can understand the hate for all of the "stealth" contours and armor plating to some extent... but it is much more purposeful here than in the Schumacher films, for instance.

I like everything except the damn cowl :down

This suit would be even better with the Bat with the Yellow Back-Ground IMO.:brucebat:

Are you referring to my pics? Because my flash wasn't even on. That's natural lighting at the museum.

And the exhibit is up at the Met if you live in New York.

Yikes...that's some harsh lighting then.

I'm in Cali. How does it look in person?

The knuckes are one of the few sensible elements.

Excellent work Lujho, it's what proper Batsuit should look like.

Now you just have to do a full body shot ha ha.
