Captain America Trades?

Hey all you Cap fans, what trades/stories/runs would you recommend for a new Capt. America reader? I would like to learn his origins, get to know his character better, etc.

I agree. It is a fantastic read and gives somewhat of a historical perspective of Cap and his relationship with his former partner Bucky Barnes.

The Brubaker trades are definitely a good place to start. The Winter Soldier stuff ties in a lot of things from Cap's past and sets up interesting stuff for his future, so you get a good picture of Cap through that. If you like Cap after learning about him in that trade, I'd recommend any of the trades from Waid's run. Waid really nailed Captain America's character perfectly, in my opinion, and the first trade of his run is great.

IMO, there aren't a whole lot of really good Cap trades, though The Winter Soldier, which the other guys have mentioned, is definitely one of them.

Another great period for Cap (IMO) is his Heroes Return (not Reborn) series. The first 25 issues or so were great, and they can be had for probably pretty cheap on ebay

there was a very short lived titled called Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty that ran for 12 issues and had some real gems in there you should also be able to find for cheap

Personally I'd recommend the Essential Captain America volume 2 along with those that have already been mentioned.

I really enjoyed Captain America: Disassembled TPB. It kind of ties into the Avengers Disassembled stuff but stands on its own at the same time. I just enjoyed Cap kicking butt, along with what felt like some decent treatment to his character! It worked well for me, and i just bought Brubaker's first arc so i'm anxious to get that read as well!
