I have no problem with them changing her origin but I hope mar-vell still plays a role in the movie.

Maybe they have to get rid of Mar-Vell so it doesn't take away attention from Carol.

I just hope this movie can repair comic-Carol's rep as much as Iron Man did comic-Tony's

Because Civil War II is making her look like a complete dumbass at the moment

It's Bendis, what do you expect. BMB is only good at writing Spider-Man and to a lesser degree Daredevil.

Well "hero vs. hero" stories RARELY leave any character look particularly good. They often have to be written as ooc trigger-happy idiots just to make the premise work.

The fact that The Russo's made the concept work at all is a major accomplishment.

CAPTAIN MARVEL Writer Says Origin Story Will Be Changed Due To GREEN LANTERN Similarities

makes sense since Both of their origins have an alien coming to Earth through extenuating circumstances, passes his abilities on to an unassuming human

and both hal and carol are also pilots lol
GL's origin is not widely known, so I think this is a bit of a copout. Its not like Spider-Man, Batman or Superman which has literally been done to death and well known to most even if you arent a comic book fan. I really dont think they need to deviate too far from Carol's actual origin. I dont even know what the GL origin story. I have a vague recollection of it and from what I recall, its not like CM which involved her getting powers from a machine after being romantically linked to an alien being

He wrote a good Jean Grey

I thought the first Civil War made Captain America look bad too.

The first CW made everyone look bad. Well except for maybe The Thing. He did the smart thing and just essentially went "to heck with all of you, I'm moving to Europe until this nonsense blows over."

I think it has more to do with them wanting to avoid comparisons to the 2011 Green Lantern film than anything else... And that is more than understandable. 😉

The 2011 Green Lantern film was a notorious failure and the many, many people who DIDN'T see it probably only saw trailers and ads and I can certainly see how unwanted comparisons might be made there.

I don't think this has much to do with the Green Lantern movie being a flop, it has to do with the similarities between the characters' comic book origin. True, the GL movie wasn't successful and it's not like everyone knows about the origin of Hal Jordan, but I believe this is being done just to show something different, not just to disassociate the Captain Marvel movie with a failed 5 year old movie that hardly anybody even remembers anymore. Or maybe they just thought a superhero being a fearless fighter pilot is an outdated concept, which kind of is.

I'll be really disappointed if Carol isn't in the military. That's actually a huge part of who she is, imo.

Trust me... Plenty of us still remember Green Lantern... Unfortunately.

Also, Nicole never said Carol wouldn't still be a USAF pilot in the MCU though, just that she's getting a different origin story than in the comics. I'm thinking the how and why Carol gets her powers is what will be different. I still think she'll be a fighter pilot though.

Yeah, as I said, I think they're mostly concerned with her powers being "hand-me-downs." Not her occupation.

Yes, those of us who are comic book fans invested in these characters. The general audience hardly remembers it anymore, let alone they would remember it in 2019. Even if they somehow would, I doubt they'd make the association that both characters are fighter pilots given great power by alien beings and all of that. It really doesn't matter imo. Looks like Marvel just wanted to take a somewhat different direction. I do think Mar-Vell should be in the movie though, in some capacity.

Mar-Vell would ideally be the gateway character into the whole Kree and cosmic. Someone is going to need to deliver the exposition that tells the audience about all that cosmic stuff.

I could see the film being a bit like Flash Gordon

I can see why they would draw the comparison. Establish big threat. Abin Sur passed his ring down to Hal after he was beaten in battle. Then Hal figures out some things and become Green Lantern.

Captain Marvel could easily get stuck and follow a similar arc. Establish big threat. Mar-Vell comes to Earth. Loses a fight. Then Carol gets her hand-me-down powers.

Thing is if they play it off right, even though some similar events may take place the story could be completely different. Or they could choose not to focus on the origin and instead offer it in flashbacks. Either way Mar-Vell is why Carol Danvers, a military & or NASA pilot chose Capt. Marvel as her alias. Mar-Vell & Pilot. Those 2 things are the most important parts.

If the Green Lantern movie hadn't been made (or hadn't been a success :o), would Marvel care whether Captain Marvel resembled Green Lantern? Or would they just put out their movie with the comic origin intact?

I'll be really disappointed if Carol isn't in the military. That's actually a huge part of who she is, imo.
Not having that would make the basis of her character unrecognisable to me. Can you imagine if they did Steve Rogers with no military background or Stark with no science background and with an average income, or Thor as just a surfer. :woot:

I can't think of any good reason why Carol shouldn't be a pilot in this movie, it's a huge part of her identity. I mean, even her new costume is a reflection of that.

And what does PR stand for?

its not like CM which involved her getting powers from a machine after being romantically linked to an alien being
You know, reading this made me realize how freaking silly her origins in the comics actually are. Yep, they desperately need some retooling. :hehe:

It doesn't help that the fight over the psyche-magnitron was basically the climax of the Mar-Vell vs. Yon-Rogg story... it wasn't even about her, she just happened to be caught in the crossfire because of her relationship with Mar-Vell. I can see why that would be problem if you're trying to write a movie where she is supposed to be the protagonist.

What if Carol Danvers in the MCU is just a flower shop owner? Or a soccer mom?

I honestly think if that movie hadn't come out first that statement never would've been made.

Hawkeye now needs an excuse for when he joins up with the Avengers or goes on dates with his wife, so Carol can be his babysitter.

I think people did jump the gun a little. Them tweaking the origin doesn't mean Mar-Vell isn't involved at all and it certainly doesn't mean she won't be a pilot.
