Well, technically I cast Erol Flynn as Thulsa Doom, then added Woody Strode as the understudy. But still . . .

Anyway, Conan vs Thulsa Doom wasn't much of a fight. Doom tries to hypnotize Conan and Conan uses his dad's busted sword to cut the wizard's head off. Done. Woody Strode's athleticism would've been wasted on that role.

How about Brock Peters (who subbed for James Earl Jones as Darth Vader in the Star Wars radio adaptations) as an alternate choice for Thulsa Doom?

Lack of fight scenes aside, Thulsa Doom still needed a certain physical presence, which I think James Earl Jones had in addition to that deep, thundering voice of his, so Woody Strode's own imposing physique wouldn't have been completely wasted as he needed that certain presence opposite other similarly big men.
