With possible casting announcements just a few months away for the Thor movie, what type of actor would you most prefer Marvel go after in the starring role? Unknown, A-list household name, or an up and comer/B-list actor ready to breakout?

It's nice to vote first.

"up and comer ready to breakout". Unless it's Gerard Butler, who I doubt would want to do this.

I want an A-list actor in the sense that they are "A" level skilled like Norton and Downey Jr. What i mean is I want incredible actors who aren't guys typicly considered A-listers by the media. I don't want any Brad Pitts, George Clooneys, or Will Smiths. You know the guys that people go to see in movies specifically because of their celebrity. I want people who are Thor, Captain America, Ant Man, just like Norton and Downey were. So an "A-lister" who isn't a household name please, you know actors like Joaquin Phoenix, Liam Neeson, Brendon Gleeson, Sean Bean, Jean Reno.

for Thor, to me thats someone like Kevin Mckidd.

Cool how everyone seems to be on the same page with this. Definitely do not want an A-lister to distract me when I look at Thor. I want to see Thor not so and so playing Thor. An unknown would also be very risky and a leap of faith which I think this movie cannot afford (see Superman Returns).

Really should look at some of those European actors. There are more Dolph Lundrens and Vladimir Kulichs lingering around.

Great post. And I like the poll. It doesn't lock you in but it gives you an idea of what people are thinking.

up and comer ready to breakout

....if I had to choose. As a fan on a message board I like to think I look for whoever is the best through looks, experience, and ability so the suggestion of a "nobody" is impossible (and kind of a cop out).

A-list actors are thrown around a lot and met with either flaming or just plain stupidity. The whole "list" thing is stupid because theres plenty of people with A-list talent better than the A-listers but are considering B or C because of popularity/marketability.

But when you are casting an existing character with a big fanbase you have to look beyond whos on the covers of magazines, beyond those who just look the part, you need to find someone who embodies the character and can do it justice despite what list they belong to.

One of these potential Europeans is Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. He was suggested some time ago at the Thor-casting thread. I thought it was an interesting idea.Unfortunately I'm not that familiar with his work, so I can't vouch for his acting skills. I can however tell you that he's 6' 2½", Danish (but speaks fluent english) and, IMO, has a decent look for Thor:

I'd say an up and comer ready to breakout.
Some one that has displayed that they have great acting chops yet haven't had true Hollywood exposure yet.

The most important thing is that he can hold his own amongst a crew of A-List actors.

Ah ha! Great choice now lets just give him some steroids and we're ready to roll.
Now as for that Loki fella....

I like Nikolaj better for Thor than the Skaarsgard kid because he looks grittier. Skaarsgard can be Balder.

i hate when people say he has to hold his own against Downey and Norton not saying actor can be **** he has to be able to act but we don't need some Oscar winning actor for Thor lol hell even for captain America we don't need some Oscar level actor routh did well with spacey and Tobey did well William Dafoe

LOL I sometimes say "hold their own against Downey & Norton" too but what I mean is compliment them and not look cheesy. I agree we don't need some oscar winning or nominated actor. There are many really good actors who don't get to lead in big budget movies. It seems a lot of times they bring in A-listers for these roles because names bring in an audience when another actor would play the part better.

Luckily Thor comes after IM2 and does a cameo. More than likely they'll be a trailer. So an A-lister isn't necessary. Get someone like Hopkins for Odin and that will work just like they brought in Brando for superman. If the actor playing Thor is sufficiently well known at least by face even if the name escapes some people (an up a comer) with the vitality to play Thor than that will work.

And since Captain america comes after the avengers movie, you can even get away with an unknown since audiences will see him in avengers and then he will be known to them.

Works for ME (provided he can act).

I say and A lister first unless they find a Great up and comer that looks like Thor.

wow. That guy looks AWESOME. I would be very much behind casting that guy!

Whoever they pick, hopefully who can do the action part and can actually act. Because not only will they be playing Thor, changes are they'll have to play Donald Blake also.

in my opinion, they should use an experienced actor, like Sean Bean or Karl Urban

I think they need someone who can portray the power of Thor which is innate. I don't see any of the current actors being able to do that.

well we'd need a genius like Chris Nolan's casting idea's to determine that, i mean who would have ever thought of Heath Ledger as Joker? i sure as hell wouldnt have, so if they get the right director then it'd be easy to find an actor today fit for the part

Steve Buscemi is experienced. He should play Thor!:whatever:

On a serious note. I know, it has been said (and written) over a trillion times, but whoever gets cast as Thor has to act in the Avengers movie side to side, shoulder to shoulder to Ed Norton and Robert Downey Jr.

It would seriously suck if they use someone who lacks both acting abilities and commitment in comparison to both of them.

And given their past, Downey Jr. and Kiefer Sutherland would rock together...but that´s another story.

Charlie Hunnam might work if he he hits the gym and works on his voice
