Aside from the movies, you have no knowledge of Superman at all? Basically, Zod was an enemy of Superman's father, Jor-El. Jor-El created the Phantom Zone, like an alternate dimension prison, and trapped Zod there. He got out and came after Earth. Supes stopped him. End of story.
