sorry is it has been posted:

"In the first movie we use Ra’s Al Ghul and The Scarecrow, who had not been in the movies before, and had not been in the sixties TV show before. And there are dozens if not hundreds of other characters that fit that bill. Everyone says its gotta be The Penguin or Catwoman… well I completely disagree.”

says Jonathan Nolan to /film
that's the main part...but here's the full article:

Christopher Nolan:
“I knew what I wanted to do with the end of the film before we wrote the story. I wanted the film to feel very complete, which isn’t the same as having a feeling of finality in the ending,” said Nolan. “There was a particular emotion from the ending, and a particular thing we were after in terms of expressing something about Batman, and bringing the entire story back to him. So that it becomes once again, Batman’s film at the very end. He dealt with a very wide number of characters, interacting in all kinds of extraordinary ways. At the end of the day we just wanted to nail the relevance of hero, our core character.”
Since the ending was there from the conception, I asked Nolan if he had a plan for a third film.
“I don’t know what I’d do next, or what would happen next,” Nolan responded. “I felt in doing a sequel that it would be a big mistake to try to hold anything back for future films. You have to put everything you can into this movie and try and make it as great as it can be.”
Christian Bale wants more but admits that it’s all up to Chris.
“I always like to have to think when I’m leaving the theater. I do love any movie that leaves me questioning what has happened, what is going to happen,” said Bale. “I see that in finishing the movie I want to know what will happen, what is going to happen. But it is completely in the hands of Chris, weather he decides to do that or not. I will be a lot of money that he didn’t give you any indication if that was going to happen or not? But it’s completely his decision.” Later adding: “I can’t imagine doing this without Chris. I don’t even want to consider that because he’s created this. This is his.”
But he’s certainly up for the challenge.
“I think there is a great challenge to it for two reasons: one is that there have been a number of sequels that have surpassed the first movie. You know, you look at Godfather 2, Empire Strikes Back… There have not been many where the third in a trilogy has managed to be the best. And I see that as a good enough reason to want to tackle it. There is also another challenge that Heath has done such a superb job with this, then how do you create a superior villain?”
Bale brings up an interesting question. What villain or villains could they possibly tackle in a third film? For the answer we went to the screenwriters, David Goyer and Jonah Nolan.
“We’re not gonna tell you… other than to say that Batman has been published for 70 years. In the first movie we use Ra’s Al Ghul and The Scarecrow, who had not been in the movies before, and had not been in the sixties TV show before. And there are dozens if not hundreds of other characters that fit that bill. Everyone says its gotta be The Penguin or Catwoman… well I completely disagree.”
So while the screenwriters won’t admit they have talked about another sequel, I think it’s obvious they have thought about the possibilities. Jonah says that with The Dark Knight the idea from the beginning was just to make a complete film. Goyer insists: “Both Movies still feel complete. I think if there was not a third one, it’s not like ‘Oh my God, these things haven’t been answered.’”
So will the Dark Knight return again?
“I think Warner Bros would like to do another one,” Goyer admitted. “But it wasn’t until three or four months after Batman Begins had opened that Chris and I sat down and talked about another one. It was a scary proposition trying to do Dark Knight, and it’s sort of a geometrically scary proposition to try to do another one.”

It didn't sound like Jonathan Nolan was necessarally ruling out Catwoman or Penguin being in the third one. He just said there were other villains that could be brought in.

I think he did.
since he helped writting the second movie, he might have his plans for the third, too, and you can be sure that WB will want him back.
and like he said..."Everyone says its gotta be The Penguin or Catwoman… well I completely disagree."

Well it's hard to say really; I think in the future we'll let Nolan do his thing and I'm sure he'll take doin' another sequel into consideration. I completely disagree with John though, Penguin I can see, but Catwoman is really a priority character to Bruce Wayne and BatMan whether he likes it or not; we'll let Bale and Oldman talk some sense into Johnny boy. :cwink: :brucebat:

I dont think Jonathan Nolan's comments RULE OUT Penguin/Catwoman, but I certainly think it shows were his interests DO NOT lie....

what I mean is...

If you're the guy who's going to write Batman 3, why would you say "I disagree Batman 3 needs to be about Penguin/Catwoman" if, in your heart, you LOVED Penguin/Catwoman...

you wouldn't.

So I think this shows that while no thought has been put into Batman 3, Nolan is at least expressing his disinterest in Penguin/Catwoman...

Penguin... I could care less about.

Catwoman.....if not her, who will Bruce's love interest be? Talia?

I want to see Riddler get the Nolan treatment.

^^with Oldman talking about Riddler and Jonathan showing indifference with Catwoman and Penguin...I think it's a strong possibility that we'd have him in a possible third movie.
and I also hope for that.

Yay!!! Different villians!!! Let's try Killer Croc, Clay Face, the Mad Hatter Ventriloquist and Scarface, and Mad Monk.

I don't mind excluding Penguin, but christ, Selina/Catwoman is such an important character that I can't believe she'd be shrugged off like that.

And I'm not buying that "there are dozens of villains.." statement. Less we forget, TDK features 2 of the most prominent, with Two-Face and Joker. Not exactly "new" villains.

^ I agree to an extent, if there are three villains that are the top of the villains list it's Joker, Two-Face and Catwoman, these are the core rogues that should be the main focus for films two and three (assuming we get a film three), I don't think we need to explore new villains just because they haven't appeared on screen yet. Having said that, as important a character as Selina is I'd hate to see her added just for the sake of having Catwoman in the series.

Maybe Jonathan Nolan meant that Penguin and Catwoman both should not be in the third film because they don't want it to be like Batman Returns. Maybe they will use one of these two characters, the one I guess they will use might be Catwoman since Christopher Nolan recently stated that Penguin is too far-fetched to use in any of his Batman films.

I agree with Nolan. I don't want to see Catwoman again yet. I wanna see some different villians that haven't been in movies or Tv show before like Black Mask.

One of the things that Batman shares with Spider-Man is the that both have the best rogues gallery in comics. Even the minor villains, like the Ventriloquist, are well developed and I think that Nolan showed he could take a lesser known - to the general public at least - villain and make him accessible to movie audiences.

All he said is that Penguin and Catwoman doesnt need to be in the third movie, and that you can include new villians.

I bet Catwoman still shows up. Doubt Penguin will now, though.

maybe he ruled them out of a movie together, cause then it will seem like batman returns.

I really can't imagine them just completely looking over Selina Kyle/Catwoman. For two fans of TLH and DV, Bale and Nolan have plenty of material they can be using for the character to easily slip her into the storyline.

id love to see a scene in which all the villains are stlling at a table discussing how to stop THHHEEEEE BATMANNNNNNN!!!! Joker a tthe head but kinda like the mob scene in the trailer

This could change in few years, I wouldn't rule out Catwoman, Penguin or another villain.

Especially if that what has been said is true...

Rachel dies
Selina Kyle/Catwoman would blend perfectly into a third film as a love interest and anti-hero.

I like Penguin as a character, but I wouldn't be too upset if he didn't appear. Catwoman, for me though, is a definite must.

I don't understand both Nolan's mentality sometimes on the issue of Penguin. HE IS AN EASY CHARACTER TO TRANSLATE FROM COMICS TO FILM! No webbed-hands or bird-like cackling, just make him waddle a bit when he walks because of his stubby toes, a little overweight, and wear a tuxedo and have a long nose and it sells itself.

I'd like to see at least Selina show up at some point. However, to be fair, the man does have a point. Neither villain has to show up in the next film. That's the great thing about Batman. He has such an amazing rogue gallery that there is really no reason why they cant do a third movie with other characters. I doubt he necessarily dislikes either character, he may just already have an idea for an amazing story that doesn't involve either character. It's kind of like all the people that want the Joker to be re-cast so he can appear in the third film. Why bother hiring someone else to replace Heath just to get a Joker cameo, when you can instead use that screen time and devote it to a character we have never seen before? That's one of the things the got me into Batman years and years ago. Other than being an interesting character in his own right, he also has the best supporting cast and rogue gallery in comics.

It has nothing to do with whether or not he is an easy character to translate. It's that there are plenty of other interesting characters out there that haven't already been used a billion times in both film and television.

Interesting.

I guess the problem that I see is that very few villains who haven't been used before seem up to the task of following Joker and Two-Face as top credible threats and interesting characters.

I mean, who do we have?

Black Mask
The Ventriloquist
Killer Croc
Deadshot
Clayface
Firefly
Hush
Mad Hatter
Hugo Strange...

What would you go with?
