CERN Discovers particle that travels faster than the speed of light!

cern_2006649c.jpg

One of the very pillars of physics and Einstein's theory of relativity — that nothing can go faster than the speed of light — was rocked Thursday by new findings from one of the world's foremost laboratories.

European researchers said they clocked an oddball type of subatomic particle called a neutrino going faster than the 186,282 miles per second that has long been considered the cosmic speed limit.

I've heard this kind of announcement before only for it to get later discredited by some other scientists. Never anything from CERN level so maybe this will be harder to claim contrary. Though even the scientists themselves aren't actually saying it yet.

If this is true, the every thing---EVERYTHING about physics and science as a whole is going to change. I mean, this could be one of the most compelling discoveries of all modern science---if it's all legit.

It won't disprove things like gravity and acceleration, though, right?

If this is true, this will be the largest scientific breakthrough of the 21st century.

Or all of ****ing science.

If this is true then this means time travel exists.

This would be absolutely phenomenal and would make also space travel a possibility within a lifetime somewhere far down the future. From what I have read and after calling a guy I know who works at CERN, they are amazed at it and are not 100% sure quite yet. this will likely be a year out before it is 100% verified or debunked.

Yay we may yet see warp drives

Waiting for Professor Brian Cox to tell us what it all means

If this is true I still have to pay rent on the first.

maybe Onestone was just joking that nothing can go faster than the speed of light.

it would explain the photo with the tounge hehehehehehehe. get it ? hehehehe

Futurama got it right years ago.

Every time Brain Cox talks about space it's like he's mentally making love to you.
I suspect alot of lonely 40 year old woman watch his show for all the wrong reasons.

I'm surprised this isn't headlining more. Given it qeastions our very existence.

Tachyons!!!! *I Hope*

This would be mind-blowing and earth-shattering news if finally confirmed.

I really want this to be true as we'd be rewriting physics laws and theroms for decades. It would be amazing.

...just joking that nothing can go faster than the speed of light.

Actually... there are “things” that can go faster than light. For instance: from Earth, you could project a laser spot onto one of Jupiter’s moons, shift the laser a smidgen, and have the spot jump to another moon – faster than it takes light to make the direct trip. But this is a kind of a conceptual exception or trick. Strictly speaking, the “rule” is that no material object or information can travel faster than light. And a moving laser spot contains no information.

This could be a huge shakeup if true. Very, very interesting.
