The following message ran in today's (12/31/08) newspaper comic of Stan Lee's Spider-Man:
Attention, Spidey fans!
Starting tomorrow, there will be a HUGE CHANGE in our hero's life!
You'll see the same Spidey surprise that Marvel comics has given its countless readers.
It's something we, too, must do because--with great power comes great responsibility!
Or, just think of it as our way of wishing you--
A HAPPY NEW YEAR!
My first thought is that they're going to break up the marriage in the strip to keep things in line with the comics. I dropped ASM after OMD and stopped following things after the first few arcs showed that this BND stuff definitely wasn't worth it. So, anyone else have a guess as to what the message could mean (assuming it's not about the marriage)?

Here's the link where I read the strip, if anyone's interested:

I didn't even know this thing still came out.

Is Lee STILL writing this??? Damn, gotta respect a man who at 86 is still doing a daily strip.

Could the HUGE CHANGE be that Stan Lee is retiring from it and passing it on to a new scribe? Doesn't necessarily mean marriage related.

I hope they're not doing BND there.

Aloha,
If not for the comic strip, there would not have been a comic book marriage. So I think you may see a break up.This is interesting because when Spidey changed to a Black costume for several years, the comic strip stayed with the classic red and blue. This change is coming forrom the highest levels of Marvel Entertainment.

Yep. The newspaper strip has still been running all this time. I like it because it's really old-school Spidey. I don't know that I'd like the main titles to be like that, but it works as a fun diversion. I often go back and read each "arc" once they wrap up to get the whole story.

I expect this is about the marriage, but there's always a chance it could be something else. That's why I was wondering if there were any big "changes" recently that anyone might be able to think of that might be what they were referring to.

I'm a little curious to see how they do break up Peter and MJ, though (I doubt Mephisto will be involved). One of the staples of the newspaper strip is the strength of the marriage, and it's one of the main reasons I like it. It's nice to see Peter actually have a positive in his life when everything else is going downhill.

I guess we'll know tomorrow, or soon thereafter.

Hmm, interesting. Well, it's great to know Stan is still writing these strips.

Leave the marriage alone SOMEWHERE. Geeze. Is it REALLY killing people THAT much? I mean, fer crissakes...they even went so far as to allow the build-up to it in the goddamn movies.

Anyways, I haven't read one of these in years, my local papers don't carry it. They're fun and old school, but my only gripe is that they progress too slowly. Say it averages three panels, the first one or two are usually used to recap what came in the strip before, leavin' one or two panels to progress the story.

Very interested to see what this is, but I'm a teeny bit out of the paper's circulation range. I'll read them online though.

Are "they" Marvel's publishing division? Becuase Joe Quesada and co. have no swing with the Spider-Man films. Sam Raimi prefers an unmarried Spider-Man, so I don't think any "build-up" is going to result in a Parker/Watson marriage while Raimi is the director.

Damn...the newspaper strip was the only place Spidey was immune from "Life Changing" events.

The strips were never very good. I know it has the old-school Spidey feel, but it always felt hacky.

Still looking forward to the collected edition of the newspapaer strips

I read a storyline at a time online. It's the best option I've found, since I really don't know that a collected edition will ever be published.

...and, it looks like comic strip Spidey is now in college and staying with Aunt May (at least temporarily). Damn. :csad:

I hope MJ is still around.

So, not only is Stan Lee taking the scene from part 4 in One More Day when Peter wakes up in Aunt May's house, but he takes it a step further by actually making him younger and back in college. So either this is all something cooked up by Mysterio or for the past several years of the strip, it's all been a dream a la Bobby Ewing from Dallas.

Since it was the strip that married them in the first place, I wonder why Stan feels the pressure and/or need to conform the strip to the comic?

Joey Q probably asked him if it would be okay to have the newspaper strip in synch with the main comic so as not to confuse the readership and Stan replied "A-Okay!"

Stan Lee, God bless him, is a completely shameless Marvel-promoting "yes man." Whatever Marvel does is.... clone saga, the other, sins past, the wedding, the undoing of the wedding... you name it... AWESOME! :word:

Don't get me wrong. He has a lot of love for the character, but more as a symbol and a role-model, than its actual stories and continuity.

Oy....:csad:....pretty sad they gotta keep attacking the marriage and totally erradicate it from all existence. Must leave no evidence behind...

That's similar the John Byrne Shaper of Worlds idea with Peter getting younger; and is something I wish they would have implemented in the main comics with BND.

The "Where's MJ?" line makes me think that this might be just some villainous plot as you suggested though.

I forget when it was released but I remember they realeased the earlier days of his life as Spider-man so maybe he is doing it again

Looks like they're just simply jumping back and starting over.

Ugh... how effin' lazy. I'm not upset or anything, because the daily strip is so disposable, but REALLY, Stan? :oldrazz:
