Yep...He's dead.
A person's full past isn't usually revealed until they are dead in shows like this.

they both open cans of worms, but look at the loose ends that Heroes has tied up
we saw what Sylar looks like, we met Claire's parents, we found out Bennet's motives, we learned what the symbol means, and now, we will learn who Bennet is working for....
