The Dark Knight Rises Characterization of the Knight - Nolan and Bale's Bruce Wayne/Batman - Part 1

I was thinking Selina's criticisms could be based on what she's seeing in front of her with Bruce. But you two do have good points. Perhaps it's just the lavishness of the ball, and the people surrounding her that sets her off.

Maybe Selina is basing her words on what she knows about Bruce Wayne (playboy Bruce) but the Bruce at the ball is not the playboy Bruce anymore.

I think him not being in Playboy mode is what suddenly draws these "real" women to him. Not pretty faces with no connection.

I agree. I think he has given up the playboy persona long ago. The death of Rachel plus the ever-growing hunt on Batman and thus retiring as so has taken a huge toll on him, therefore I believe he feels he no longer needs (or desires) to put up such a disguise (possibly another reason why he's not wearing a mask at the ball-- he feels he no longer needs to wear masks or has the energy for them). I think Selina has targeted Wayne long before the ball (the necklace per se), therefore she probably confronts/lures him in for a dance and the whole threatening speech begins.

I love the contrast in Batman in these two scenes. In the first one, he's totally out of it and unsure with what to do next. In the second one, he looks bad ass and just plain pissed off. :funny:

love the idea that nolan has of showing what batman's plan succeeding would look like?

The question of what exactly does the world look like after it has been saved.

Its complex and juicy

Upon first seeing the set footage I pondered how the color timed final film will look like. Initially, foolishly, I envisioned a warmer and more vibrant palette. It's a testament to Wally's eye for beauty that he pictured the exact opposite: cooler, desaturated, high contrast lighting. Beautiful.

I know it's mainly a trick of the camera, but it confuses me why they'd try to make Bane appear so huge in one scene and average in the other. Maybe not venom but perhaps a return of the fear toxin? I'd rather Bane kick his ass without cheap tricks or whatever, but the way it's shot Bruce does look out of it and Bane is shot in a more monstrous way they usually seem to go for him.

The top is where Bane is in control, and second is where Batman is in control. He's not so scary in the second one. It's actually quite clever.

Makes sense, but did they have to shoot Bane like a mammoth in the first one to convey that? :p

Some descriptions from the footage that pertains to Bruce:

Then it cuts to a series of shots showing Christian Bale as an aging — and perhaps ailing — Batman. (This film is set eight years after 2008′s The Dark Knight.)

Bale has sunken eyes; he looks pale and haggard, and uses a cane. By comparison, Michael Caine’s Alfred appears as if he hasn’t aged a day. “Don’t worry, Master Wayne,” the butler reassures him later in the footage. “It takes a little time to get back in the swing of things.”

Anne Hathaway’s Selina Kyle (a.k.a. Catwoman) is a maid working in Wayne Manor. On screen, she is nearly skewered by a crossbow arrow Bruce appears to be firing in his dining room.

We saw at least a couple shots of Bruce Wayne in his robe at Wayne Manor, one of which shows him in particularly awful shape. He's standing, but the fatigue shows on his face.

Not all is bad for Bruce, though, as his love life appears to be on the upswing. There was a shot of he and Miranda Tate kissing (I've seen it reported elsewhere that he was kissing Selina Kyle, but it was definitely Tate) on what appeared to be the "morning after."

The relationship between Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle is a little harder to pin down, as the footage sent mixed signals.

There was a brief shot of the two of them fighting side-by-side, but more importantly was the sympathy Catwoman showed to Batman and his cause. "You've given them everything," she tells Batman, to which he replies,"No I haven't. Not yet." I'm paraphrasing the beginning of Batman's line, but I'm sure about the "Not yet" part.

We also see Kyle hanging out with Bruce Wayne, but it's Bruce Wayne who seems sick or injured. He's thin, and he has a ****** goatee. He's playfully shooting a bow and arrow in his dining room - right next to Selina.

Sounds like Nolan is using Howard Hughes as a reference to this Bruce. I can't wait! :woot:

BOM: Is Bruce Wayne a great businessman?

Nolan: I see him as being like Howard Hughes, whom I wrote a script about. There's a lot of Howard Hughes in Bruce Wayne. The bottom line on Howard Hughes is that you can read as many books that say he was a brilliant businessman as you can that say he didn't have a clue. At the end of the day, he did extraordinary things with his money in terms of engineering and accomplishments and a self-interested direction. And I see Bruce Wayne as a very smart guy who's going to use his money in a [similarly] extraordinary way.

I remember when I first read the script, of course it was all top secret,” Bale said during a break in the shoot. “I went round by Chris’ house, was shut in the room with the script — not allowed to leave with it — and it hit me that this was the last one. What Chris couldn’t believe was how slow I read because I go back and re-read until I have it all in my mind. I was in there six or seven hours. It was dark when I came out. And I was smiling.

This is my favorite thread in the TDKR section, and even though I've been avoiding most of the forum lately because of spoilers, I will still be frequenting this one because there's some great discussion that goes on here.

I've read several of the footage descriptions but this was the first one that mentioned Bruce shooting a crossbow in the dining hall. I'm guessing this will be early on in the film, before Bane arrives.

I think this movie will have a similar kind of feel to TDK in the beginning. Even now, after the bank heist scene, I get so caught up in all of the different characters and what's going on in Gotham City that I forget the Joker's even in the movie until he shows up at the mob meeting about half an hour in.

That's incredibly solid writing, and I expect TDK to be much the same. After the plane opening, I'm expecting at least 20 to 30 minutes of non-Bane related footage that establishes the state of the world for Gotham and shows us how the main characters are dealing with it. Bruce and Gordon in particular. I can't help but wonder if there will be some form of communication maintained between Batman and Gordon, that Gordon will use to warn Bats about Bane.

There's simply too much to say about Bruce's character after this last trailer.

And that's coming from someone who once wrote a 15 page post.

Did anyone elses heart sink a bit when Selina said to Bruce, "you've given enough, you've given them everything" and Bruce said "Not everything.... not yet"? It's exactly the same look and delivery he gives at the end of TDK when he sacrifices himself to stop The Joker breaking Gotham's spirit.

This movie is going to be superb.
The look on Bruce's face when he's looking up the big well reminds me of the same look he had when he picked the blue flower and looked up at the mountains in Begins.
A look of pure determination

Regarding Bruce in the trailer:

1. Hermit Bruce = Awesome. I like how intense he looked. You can tell not being Batman is just gonna mess his mind up even further.

2. "It sounds like you're looking forward to it". I like this line...I feel like there's a bit of sadness when he says it.

3. "Why didn't you just...kill me?"- People have this theory that Bruce is wishing that Bane finished him off...I think Bruce is just wondering..."Why didnt you just kill me? Why throw me prison?"

4. Bruce climbing the well = Awesome. One of the things that reminds me of why the title is "The Dark Knight Rises"

5. Batman and Gordon with the flare and Bats standing on the bridge are two excellent shots.

6. "Not Everything. Not Yet"- How could you not sympathize with Batman? This def feels like the point where Batman decides to sacrifice himself for Gotham.

7. "This isn't a car"- I like when Batman takes jabs at himself. This one is especially great because of the banter with Catwoman.

Hermit Bruce looks like a grumpy old bastard.

Batman's voice sounds better in the latest trailer.

Not to be "That guy", but the voice is exactly the same as it was in TDK when he said such lines as "I want the Joker/I'm counting on it", "Then you're going to love me" and "Beautiful, isn't it?". But anyways, the inflection in his voice is just as strong as it's ever been.

I figured Bruce would have a more "outward" journey in TDKR, but after seeing this third trailer I'm so pumped to see Bale own this role, yet again.

This.

I was hoping it would be toned down a bit, but since I was one of the people who didn't hate the voice in TDK (other than in his speech to The Joker), I don't mind that it sounds the same.

I think this scene will be pretty powerful and I can already tell that it's going to be one of my favorite moments in the film. It's a great testament to what Bruce Wayne is.
