Gary Fleder (Runaway Jury, Kiss the Girls) is in talks to direct Fox's The Deep Blue Good-by, based on the first title in crime novelist John MacDonald's prolific Travis McGee series, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The 21 McGee novels, most of which were written in the 1960s and '70s and all of which feature a color in their title, could be turned into a franchise by Fox. They feature McGee, a free-living bachelor and reluctant hero who lives on a houseboat in Florida and works as a "salvage consultant," recovering property and money for clients and taking half the fee in return.

"Good-by" centers on McGee's efforts to track down a treasure that a soldier escaped with and hid after World War II.

I liked the other films he directed so I will definately be following this close..

Isn't this one of the roles RDJ was looking at ?

Robert Downey Jr. is being courted by studios that want to help him sustain his much-heralded comeback. Following his role in the year's highest-grossing movie so far (Iron Man), he's once again on their must-have list. In recent weeks, the 43-year old actor has had his eye on various projects, including Twentieth Century Fox's Travis McGee (based on John D. MacDonald's detective series), Warner Bros.' Sherlock Holmes update from director Guy Ritchie, Gary Ross' fantasy/comedy Dog Years at Universal, and, as previously reported by EW.com, Brett Ratner's Hugh Hefner biopic, among others. Hmmm... Robert Downey Jr. in a smoking jacket, surrounded by Bunnies? We can totally see it.

Im guessing its for this project.

20th Century Fox is developing The Deep Blue Goodbye, an adaptation of the John D. MacDonald mystery novel series that has Leonardo DiCaprio attached to star.

Peter Chernin joins Appian Way's DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson Killoran as producers on the project written by Dana Stevens (For Love of the Game). Amy Robinson also is involved in a producing capacity.

DiCaprio is in line to play Travis McGee, a self-described beach bum who lives aboard 52-foot houseboat the Busted Flush and alleviates his cash-flow problems by hiring on as a "salvage consultant." He recovers property for clients, taking a hefty percentage and getting into a lot of danger and romance in sun-drenched Florida.

What isn't DiCaprio attached to these days?

This sounds really cool. But could do better as a tv show maybe?

I can imagine DiCaprio wearing sun glasses, shorts, and a Hawaiian shirt solving cases on a boat. Seems cool.

Oliver Stone in Talks for Travis McGee

Source: Risky Business
April 1, 2010

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps helmer Oliver Stone is in talks to direct Travis McGee for 20th Century Fox. Leonardo DiCaprio has been attached to play the title character since September of last year.

In the adaptation of John D. MacDonald's first book in the mystery novel series, titled "The Deep Blue Good-by," McGee is a self-described beach bum who lives aboard 52-foot houseboat the Busted Flush and alleviates his cash-flow problems by hiring on as a "salvage consultant." He recovers property for clients, taking a hefty percentage and getting into a lot of danger

Peter Chernin is producing with Appian Way's DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson Killoran. The film was written by Dana Stevens and Kario Salem.

James Mangold Boarding Travis McGee Tale ‘The Deep Blue Good-By’

EXCLUSIVE: James Mangold is negotiating to direct The Deep Blue Good-Bye, the 1964 John D. MacDonald novel that kicked off series of mystery novels with character Travis McGee. This has long been eyed by Fox as the launch of a star-driven franchise based on the beach bum McGee, a forerunner of muscular solitary heroes like Jack Reacher and Spenser For Hire, helping (and romancing) damsels in distress as he kicks ass against the powerful.

The film was originally set as a star vehicle for Leonardo DiCaprio. That’s not going to happen now, as DiCaprio has plenty of work in front of him and this film, with a most recent script draft by Mystic River novelist Dennis Lehane, is certainly ready to go. DiCaprio and his Appian Way partner Jennifer Davisson-Killoran are producing with Amy Robinson and Chernin Entertainment. Previous script drafts were done by Dana Stevens and Kario Salem.

Oliver Stone hasn't made a good movie in 20 years. Leo not being involved is a blessing.

I'll have to agree. I'm shocked that Brett Ratner didn't direct Wall Street 2. It was like the most Brett Ratner film that wasn't directed by Brett Ratner.

Christian Bale in such a role could be great fun! I hope everything pans out. I also think he and Mangold work very well together. 3:10 to Yuma was great (and one of Mangold's best, together with Cop Land and Walk the Line).

Bale is not exactly the first one that comes to mind for this role (blond, muscular womanizing beach bum/detective just screams McConaaaaggggheeeeyyyyy to me) but I think that's a good thing because it'll let him try something new. Mangold always speaks highly of Bale so I'm not surprised that they're looking on projects they can work on again. 3:10 To Yuma was fantastic.

Who will be the king of the hippy beach bum PI from LA movie? This or Inherent Vice?

LOL Bale is so professionally done with franchises. :lmao:

The move comes after Bale's negotiations with Fox to star in The Deep Blue Goodbye hit a roadblock. Sources say Fox was trying to include sequel options for Bale to tackle the lead role of Detective Travis McGee in what is hoped to be a franchise starter, but the actor balked. Now, talks are ongoing with Bale without sequel options, but even if a deal is reached, the actor would shoot the Jobs project before Deep Blue Goodbye.

LOL! I love Bale. Don't blame him either. I'm just glad he did TDK Trilogy.

I wish they would just pay Fincher whatever he wanted, especially if they end up getting Bale for the project; which looks like it will be the case.

Amy Dunne and Patrick Bateman together at last. :hrt: Imagine how pretty their serial killer babies would be!

Peter Dinklage, Nicola Peltz in Talks to Join Christian Bale in 'Deep Blue Goodbye'

Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage and Transformers: Age of Extinction actress Nicola Peltz are in negotiations to join Christian Bale and Rosamund Pike in Deep Blue Goodbye, Fox's adaptation of the John D. MacDonald mystery-adventure books.

James Mangold is directing the project, which was at times operating under the title Travis McGee. McGee is the protagonist of the picture. He's a free-wheeling bachelor living on a house boat, acting as a self-proclaimed "salvage consultant."

The script sees McGee, now reimagined as an Afghan war vet, on the trail of stolen sapphires, which leads to a sadistic torturer.

Dinklage will play a mathematician who made a fortune thanks to an app and ends up as McGee's sidekick.

Peltz, in a potentially career breakthrough role, will play a woman who acts older than she is, knows more about the sapphires than she lets on, hires McGee to find them and ends up on the wrong side of the torturer.

The movie is looking at a May start, shooting in Puerto Rico and Florida.
