Documentary/Biopic Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer

I'm still processing it all but man, was this something. Murphy and RDJ nailed it and Blunt and the rest of the cast were incredible. IMO Nolan's best since Inception and best of 2023 so far in my book. I think only Dune Part Two and Killers of the Flower Moon might come within striking distance of this out of what's still to come.

I can't stop thinking about the editing of this movie. I walked out of Tenet rather underwhelmed in that sense and felt like the editing wasn't really connecting with the script very well. But this is just incredible work by Lame. I'm going to be annoyed if it doesn't get all the editing awards. Hopping between time periods and perspectives feels like watching a dance of sorts and the three hours breeze by.

Maybe it took some time for Nolan and Lame to work out the kinks in their relationship. Is there any word why Nolan changed from his longtime relationship with Lee Smith? Seems strange they stopped working together right after Smith got the Oscar for Dunkirk.

Lee Smith edited 1917 because it got the greenlight before Tenet. Nolan said he loved working with Lame, and it seems like he keeps working with people until they decide to move on other projects.

The editing process for Oppenheimer was different than his other movies. His editors usually travel to every location with him, but Lame couldn't be there because she was editing Wakanda Forever. So she came on after they wrapped and they started going through the dailies.

I really like Lame's editing on Tenet. That whole movie is a vibe. But her work on Oppenheimer is incredible.

While it wasn’t as bad as his other movies, the score is still too loud in some scenes. I don’t know why Nolan feels the need to have such a loud booming score punctuate every scene with dialogue

I can agree that the very loud music after some dialogue scenes is a bit odd. That the music swells up after the dialogue is done is logical but I think it gets so loud that I'm rather taken out of the film as a distraction than getting an immersive emotional effect. It can get clearly louder than almost everything else in the film and that's quite jarring at the end of an otherwise pretty quiet scene.

By now I think it's clear that I don't like some of his ideas regarding sound mixing that much. It's not a big deal for me in this film though, and in the test scene the sound mix instead lands perfectly for me.

The black and white/colour distinction is not meant to define time but perspective. Nolan referred to it as objective vs subjective, but it could perhaps be easier understood as from Oppenheimer's perspective and from that of those around him. Our initial view of the scene is from the outside looking in, as Strauss would see it, while our return to the scene is seeing it from his perspective and experiencing what's going through his head in that moment.
Going in I had assumed that the B&W scenes were going to be all of the post-Trinity but I was more impressed with how it was actually utilized. It's a brilliant storytelling technique.

Great movie, but will be hard to watch a 2nd time.
Hope Cillian Murphy and RDJ will get awards recognition.

I thought RDJ did well but I’ve seen him as Stark for so long that I caught some Stark mannerisms come through

The one time RDJ reminded me of Tony Stark here was
when he was going on his unhinged rant against Oppenheimer at the end ("He should be thanking me!"). It was similar to shellshocked Tony at the beginning of Endgame. RDJ excels at that stuff.
And why was JFK teased like Gordon flipping over the Joker card at the end of Batman Begins?
I took it more as seizing the opportunity of real life events to tip a hat to JFK, not just for him not buying Strauss's vendetta against Oppenheimer but also as an inside reference to JFK the film being a heavy influence on this.

Everything editing-wise in this movie was just...butter. Nolan, Lame and Gorranson all went beast mode to make those 3 hours fly by.

1:54. Oh man, THIS scene. Ludwig's score for this film is out of this world.

Saw it on Thursday in 70mm and been thinking about it ever since. The music was truly something else.

"You don't get to commit sin and then ask all of us to feel sorry for you when there are consequences."

That delivery by Emily Blunt, oh man. Same goes for Kitty's final glance at Teller.

According to The Numbers, Oppenheimer has cleared $400M world-wide. And, obviously, that number will continue to grow. Methinks Universal is very pleased.
Great to see audiences responding to this. I need Nolan to keep working as long as possible.

I'm hoping this finally translates to some Oscar gold for Nolan.
Yes, way overdue. Hopefully some acting nominations too for this although I don’t know what the competition is like this year with other potential winners.

It's a little early to tell how competition will be but I think nominations for Murphy, RDJ and Blunt are certainly on the table. I actually think its biggest competition will be Dune Part Two in the technical categories unless that gets pushed back.

If a film has to take awards away from Oppenheimer, I’m fine with it being Dune 2. Best of luck to both of them.

I haven't seen either film but I hope Barbie wins ALL the awards over Oppenheimer AND Dune 2 just for the internet meltdown.

I think Blunt definitely gets a nomination. Possibly RDJ even though I don’t think it’s warranted. Cillian for sure.
