Some movies need endings. This story led us to a conclusion. It built to one, it was logical to give one (which cannot be said about Blade Runner). The audience in this film deserved an ending. Not a cheap twist for the sake of havng a twist.
What Nolan did wasn't a smart. A smart twist would've been.....well......smart. The ending we received was no different than Freddy jumping out of the mirror at the end of Nightmare on Elm Street 2010. Its not smart. Its a cheap last minute ploy to generate buzz and create sequel potential.
there's just nothing correct about this. the ending isn't a twist at all, it has everything to do with the story of the film, and most definitely is not there to set up a sequel.
the significance of cutting to black before we can see if the top topples or not is not to make us want to come back for a sequel to see if he was still dreaming, but to make the point that it didn't matter to him. he's chosen this reality, and it doesn't matter if it's our reality or not. it's a concept that's set up very early in film at the chemist's place.
