That's what character development is for! Character development changes the character, but it explains it, over time, like Tony Stark becoming an alcoholic, it was done over the course of a story, it wasn't just introduced out of no where.

That story did come out of nowhere. Like seriously nowhere. He had, literally one drink in the story and then blam-o, instant alcoholism.
