MJ's looks are an important trait. It affects how Peter and others respond to her. The way others respond to her affects her personality.

This. If you do not understand this concept of mary Jane then you don't understand the character and her history what so ever. Its like taking the nerd out of peter parker.

It's interesting that this message board has reached the conclusion that the more attractive an actress is, the less acting ability they have.

But that just it. I am thinking about her future. In this film she should be a bit sassy, care free, popular. Sorta like gwen but a step above that. Unlike gwen mj should be far more social. But at the same time give her some hints at depth and likeability.

That way when gwen dies she shocks us with her compassion and we see a new side of her.



Its quite ironic that people wanna lable me and others superficial, when that was the whole original aspect of mj. Peter thought she was superficial, but she shocked him when gwen died.

Honestly, I don't think Gwen should die here. If that happens in many people's eyes it may look as MJ is the rebound girl. Of course, that depends on how it's played out but I personally don't think Gwen should die. Maybe she can almost die and then at the end she and Peter can make a decision to split for good, and subsequently MJ can show she has a strong enough character to be with him through thick and thin. There was an issue during that infamous "Sins Past" saga where MJ said to him that she "won't end up like Gwen". That says enough about her and I don't think Gwen needs to literally die for us to see that MJ is Peter's rock.

Of course her looks are important. But unlike many here, Peter Parker doesn't judge people based on their looks...

Who's to say they didn't look at someone "a little prettier", to use your words. There are chemistry issues to consider here. Maybe Sony and Webb auditioned a bunch of actresses and felt that Woodley had the best chemistry with Andrew, or that the others had none? So again, we have to wait and see the finished product, too logical?

I really dont see Gwen dying in this flick, I think that would be way too rushed, they are on the right track with this world building, give us time to see their relationship grow more.

Some people here seem to make excuses for them casting woodley no matter what, I dont get it. If the director doesnt want to tell that version of MJ, then he should go direct a movie where he can create his own character.

what unless the director gets someone more pretty to play MJ he might aswell do another movie? he can do her personallity traits as a cute girl

gwen is a pretty girl and likes peter already, the pretty girl who falls for peter has been done

certain things about MJ won't be looked at, because not only will she probably have a small role in this film but if she has a bigger role in the 3rd it will be a supporting role to peter, thats if gwen is killed off, you don't need the oh the hot girl likes the geek stuff

At the same time, I'd rather have someone who can bring layers to the character then some smoking hot model who can't act. We have to wait and see it - how the character is written, the on screen chemistry etc. It's as simply as that imo.

Which is why they should cast based on both looks and acting. No one wants to see an actress who cant act unless its porn.

Personally, Im not judging this girl yet. Just arguing MJs looks do matter.

Complaining about bad amateur pics that show an actress looking like she got out of bed 10 minutes ago, should have nothing to do with anything either. Yet, look at what's going on.

Except i touched on it several times... She's a hot party girl on the outside that appears to have no depth but actually has quite alot. Not to mention the whole dynamic of this nerdy every man finding a gorgeous model whos actually quite average on the inside. She sorta represents the perfect catch... (and again Im saying this meaning that this does not have to be a Victoria secret model to be this... Somewhere between average and that would be great though.

Mj is a model, an actress, and part of her charm is that she chose peter when her looks and stardom could easily get a guy better looking and wealthier.

And there it is again. You guys are fixated on this version of MJ that is a model/actress when it seems that Webb is going the Ultimate route. The ones defending Shailene aren't making up excuses for her casting. We're just being open-minded and accepting of the fact that other versions of MJ exist. And I think Shailene is somewhere between average, maybe even above average.

I am hoping she is good, but again these discussions are based on what we have to go on, and everything we have to go on is yeah shes an okay actress, and two shes a cute girl. Thats it. So yes people are going to question it till the movie comes out because everyone here has their own idea of what Peter, Gwen and MJ should look like. I am willing to bet, most people think right now, they got 2 out of 3 close to perfect, so the 3rd is a bit disappointing.

I don't think I want to see it happen. Only if it's done right and the subsequent MJ/Peter romance depicted naturally, not MJ looking like his rebound. Again, this isn't the comics where they have enough time and space portray his moving on from Gwen, this is a two hour movie that has limited time to convince you of it. So I hope they know what they are doing if they are really going to kill Gwen.

Hes not, but if you are doing the 616 gwen for the most part, MJ needs to be a contrast to Gwen. If you do ultimate Gwen (they didnt, thank god) then you do ultimate MJ. Hes not obligated to do anything and i trust him for the most part with his casting choices.

Unless you are some of these heroes on this board defending this strangers honor over and over because they feel we should give her a fair chance, which most of us are. But we cannot voice our disappointment with the casting apparently because we wanted someone prettier, if we complained we want a better actress it would be okay, and from her acting, she isnt THAT great. serviceable id say. Hope she brings her a-game. because shes sharing the screen with some great actors.

Yeah this seems oddly familiar to when Garfield was cast. He was, and I guess you can say, he still is an unknown actor. Didn't people ask "why the bad place did they decide to go with this unknown british guy??" And then when the set pics came out people grinded him for the way he looked.
