Clive Owen has cleared up a little mystery about why he wasn't chosen to play James Bond, saying he was never offered the role in the first place - reports This Is Derby.

The 42-year-old was the bookies favourite to step into Pierce Brosnan's shoes as 007 right up until Daniel Craig was cast, and was said to have been approached by director Martin Campbell, reports the Daily Express.

But in an interview with GQ magazine, Clive revealed: "I didn't turn it down. I was never offered it. It was all hype. My wanting the role was never an issue. It was all spun. By whom I have no idea."

And Clive scoffed at suggestions that he would have made the perfect Bond because he has the right 'look'.

"That's ridiculous. That's where you get bad James Bonds if you cast a guy who looks right. You cast the best actor," he said.

The Children Of Men star insisted that he has no regrets over not doing the role, saying: "I've never been so happy with the work that I've been doing and I continue to be so."

Owen had only praise for Daniel Craig and the way he handled the media firestorm, saying "all the ****" Craig was given was unnecessary - and insists the actor was always more than capable of filling the iconic super spy role. He says, "They should have been celebrating the fact they gave the role to a proper actor and not a model. He swung it around big time."

Very interesting.

Yeah, I didn't think he was offered it either. Glad he cleared that up.

i liked how he spoofed 007 in the pink panther movie

I'm confused, when was it ever reported he was and when did people believe that?

I know for a long time fans wanted him to play the role. And he played a riff on him in that crappy Pink Panther movie.

It was all just rumors during that almost year long casting decision. I think in rumor-ville it came down to Clive Owen, Daniel Craig, and Dr. Doom.
But just like now with the Bond girl for the next one, people report that someone was offered it when they really weren't.

i wouldnt want clive as bond. he's too dark to be james bond

I don't think I ever remember Owen being offered the role the in the rumors. I would've liked Owen to have played Bond.

But that's nothing new. Even Hype reports a lot about people being offered or hot for certain roles that's not true at all.

007 being too dark?
You should've told that to Timothy Dalton.
I thought he was just fine, just as Clive Owen would've.

nah, i still think clive is honestly 2 much of a badass to be james bond.
remembe bond does have a sense of humor. and i dont see clive being funny in anyway.
and yes timothy doltan was dark and he sucked also

I think he was joking. As an ironic statment against to the ''Craig is too blond for Bond'' argument.

EDIT: Oh he was not. It would have been good though.

Are you saying Dalton doesn't have a sense of humor?

Watch Hot Fuzz sometime.

I'm probably going to get flamed for this, but (I am a female, for reference) Dalton's my favorite Bond.

i thought he was regarded as the worst bond. i dont know if i ever saw any of his

I thought Dalton was a great Bond too. It's cool also that the actor who played Q, Desmond Lewellyn, said Dalton looks the closest to Ian Felming's James Bond.
