So, I just went through Coast Guard training, not basic training mind, but a program designed for persons who've already served in another branch of the armed forces. (I served 5 years Army)

But i did see regular recruit training, and my initial idea of the training, before i got there, was, how hard could it be, its the coast guard...

Man was i wrong, even the watered down training we recieved as prior service was pretty hard mentally and physically. I'm still in shock over it a little.

I guess this is my way of letting people know about this. Anyway i'd enjoy to hear anyone's thoughts.

Training, is nothing! Will, is everything!

How very 'Confucius' of you, Mee.

That guy stole all my best ideas.

Let's egg his house--err...grave. :cmad::up:

No. :o

:wantsgoodkarma:

what was it like? a lot of water training im sure... have you seen the movie the guardian? they show some hard core coast guard training.

Cool. My dad's been a Coastie for close to 23 years.

the movie guardian made it seem kind of rough

I always thought coast guards didnt have to go through very tough training, but hearing from you who has been through army, it dosen't seem so. Hope you're not stationed in Alaska lol.

If Ashton Kutcher can do it anyone can.

I was going to go into the Coast Guard out of college, with a degree I'd would have also had limited basic training but would finish as an Officer.

I was having a tough time finding a job, so I finished everything up to the physical. Then I got a job and I opted out.

But I knew that even limited basic training was going to be rough.

Okay, The Guardian really is no indication of Coast Guard training.

I have a couple of buddies who went Coast Guard after the service. One was a marine and the other was a Ranger and they both said it was just as tough as anything they did in the service, only with more water.

Don't know all the specifics. He did some sort of advanced Coast Guard training, though, so that's probably why he had that opinion. *shrug*

if it was advanced coast guard training, such as rescue diver, yeah i could see that. but theres no way coast guard basic could be as hard as ranger school or rip.

Yeah I'm back,
Uh, the training wasn't a lot of water training, you do that more at your unit. Now if you're freaking nuts you can go rescue swimmer (actually called Aviation Survival Technician, or AST)
Someone asked about the movie about AST A school, two things from some AST's i've spoken to.
1. the class size is a lot smaller, about 8 or 9.
2. the training is ridiculously harder than what they showed in the movie.

I know i'm not an olympic level swimmer, but i still want to work with AST's, so I;m going Avionics Electrical TEchnician.
AET support the pilots and the swimmer... (in the movie you saw the guy operate the winch to raise the swimmer or victims.)

Yeah, i am freicking stoked.

Oh and Fred is right, Ranger school / RIP are way harder than Coastie Basic... c'mon.

So you'd be in a chopper most of the time? cool :woot: I've always wanted to be part of something like that, a rescue team or somethin'.

Then why did you say this?

are you trying to say that Army boot camp is harder but Coastie training was just harder than you thought it would be?

Specifics please.
