Cobra Kai - (The Karate Kid Spin-Off)

Vile I love reading your commentary. You remind me of Demetri LOL.

Hey I'm sorry if some of my comments came on too strongly. Anyone who loves Cobra Kai, I apologize if I came off as rather brusque.

All the power to the Cobra Kai fans here if you love the show. I think we can all have fun and say our views on it.

You have and can share your opinions like everyone else. No need for apologies.

Finally finished it fully. It's definitely the weakest of the three seasons, but still a lot of fun. The Daniel/Johnny stuff is obviously the strongest. Mostly my problems have been reiterated in this thread a few times.

I think the kids storyline was definitely the weakest compared to the other seasons. As I liked them all in past seasons, with a few exceptions, the only likeable one here was Miguel. Maybe the humor that Johnny inflicted on them was lacking this time around, but that helped to lighten their "mad face" mood. They're not particularly strong actors, except for Miguel, as they usually just have "mad face" 95% of the time. Johnny helped to lighten that in previous seasons.

As said before, this is William Zabka's show. He's been fantastic throughout all three seasons and his scenes with Ali were so heartfelt. I hope it gives him a second career beyond the show.

And I loved the way they wrapped up Ali's storyline with Daniel. Instead of making her the "b****" from the beginning of Karate Kid 2, they flipped it and it was Daniel who exaggerated the whole thing. It helped to redeem her character and I'm sure that was a big reason Elizabeth Shue agreed to return.

BTW,

Kreese has his two Vietnam buddies where one looks almost identical to Silver, yet they kill him off, and it's implied the other, who doesn't look anything like Silver, is actually Silver?

I get why do it for Kreese at the cafe to make you think the bully is Kreese, but why for Silver when only about 3 people even know who he is lol. It's kind of a dumb red herring when we just had one with Kreese, who is already known to the audience of the show.

Just a very weird casting choice and not fulfill it to the 3 of us who care.

They enjoyed their fakeouts. Between the Silver and Kreese fakeout, lets not forget the fakeout with the specialist from out of state fake out. You know people were sad it wasn't Ali.

I really loved Season 3. But its okay if it wasn't your cup of tea. For personal reasons, I know the early Miguel stuff will make it difficult for me to rewatch.

Zabka and Macchio really don't get the amount of credit they deserve for what they bring to this series, especially Zabka who does alot of the dramatic heavy lifting and sells it pretty damn well IMO.

As goofy and cheesey as the material is their performances add so much weight and personality to this show., because you sure ain''t getting that from the kids in this show.

Oh wow, this is pretty cool. Apparently the bully in the diner from the flashback scene was played by Martin Kove’s (Sensei Kreese) son in real life

That explains why he looked almost like a match for a young Kreese.

This.

Still can't believe Zabka is 55! Guy looks amazing.

Macchio's always looked younger and he's almost 60.

Zabka's dramatic skills are very underrated. Especially the scenes he has with Xolo.

That scene when Miguel first saw him after waking up and he did the ugly cry and told him to GTFO really made me misty the first time I saw it. Zabka had that guilty, shamed father look.

Or Daniel's poor wife...who...I don't know how she is putting up with this trash at this point and hasn't left Daniel and taken the kids.

Yes, Zabka is very underrated, and he's had an okay career, just did a bunch of B films that either ended up on the Sci-Fi Channel or got lost in the Dollar DVD bin at Walmart, LOL. He is an Oscar nominated writer as well for Best Live Action Short Film.

Really nice guy as well, got to meet him at Comicon a few years back after Season One, couldn't be happier for both him and Ralph.

I don't see how they can stretch it past S4 i mean I loved the first 2 seasons but this 3rd jump that shark a bit with that finale NO WAY DOES Larusso's wife lets this slide and will be ok to settle it with a karate tournament in which she already finds absurd they vandalize her home attempt to kill her daughter and was the Son in the house as well u know that one that seems they written off cause he was so annoying in th first season lol but seriously and i'm suppose believe Tori sent that kid throught the window that last episode was pure eye roll

loved the thing they did with Shue one and done as it should be and the Japan stuff

and Robbie and Miguel don't say anything to each other after what they both went through since the school fight I'm looking forward to S4 but i don't see myself watching it past S4 since the remaining characterrs that were teased from the Part 3 i have no interest in watching that

I'm expecting Kreese to finally, and for the last time, die next season which will leave Cobrai Kai needing a leader again.

I can see Robby dying as well indirectly due to the actions of Samantha or Miguel which will lead Johnny back down the dark path to Cobrai Kai sensei at their worst.

They can definitely get a Season 5 out of it. After that I think it's a stretch too far.

I had the OG KK Daniel figure back in the 80s it had a breakaway board accessory and he had a spring loaded chop motion too, and the icing on the cake they had his logo of his headband on the back of the package (you were supposed to lay a white cloth over it and use a marker to make the pattern like a stencil).

I'll admit, I love this show. Definitely one of my favorites going right now. Season 3 was good. I liked it a lot. Not as good as season 1 or 2, imo, but still very enjoyable. Johnny has been consistently awesome in each season. Billy Zabka is very underrated and I echo the sentiment that I hope he gets more acting gigs going forward.

I don't know, I don't think "Ponytail" looks anything like Silver, outside of his hairstyle. The actor who plays "Twig" (the real Terry Silver) looks a lot more like Thomas Ian Griffith, imo.

'Cobra Kai' Creators Give Update on Season 4, Tease Possible Spinoffs (Exclusive)

"We are looking to make Season 4 in 2021," Cobra Kai co-creator and executive producer Josh Heald told PopCulture. "COVID has thrown a wrench into everyone's plans for exactly when production begins. But our expectation is in early 2021, we will be in production. We are just keeping our heads down and making sure that the story makes sense and the scripts are solid and getting our ducks in a row so the moment that everything looks good, we can begin.

"The beauty is our stages have so many sets at this point," Heald continued. "Things that used to be locations, we've built onstage. ...The moment that it's a go, we will be ready to jump with very little prep."

Fans are excited about Season 4 as they saw Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) bring their dojos together to take on the Cobra Kai dojo at the end of Season 3. And with the All Valley Karate Tournament back on, the fourth season of Cobra Kai will likely have just as much action and drama as the first three seasons.

But another question that has to be asked is how long will Cobra Kai last, and could fan see spinoffs for some of the characters? "We have plans for several more seasons of the show," series co-creator and executive producer Jon Hurwitz said. "When we starting writing Season 1, we had a clear sense where we wanted things to end, but we never knew exactly how long it would take to get there. ... We've written Season 4, or most of it. We have thoughts beyond that, and it's going to be an ongoing dialogue with Netflix."

Hurwitz also said that they are prepared if Netflix decides to end the series earlier than expected. He then stated that they "love making the show" and they are "confident" they will be able to "continue to tell the story and have it come to an ending that is fulfilling."

"The hope is that these characters are in a place that could lead to more stories down the road," Hurwitz revealed. "We love the show Breaking Bad, for example. We love how that story concluded, but you're still living in that Breaking Bad universe. The same can be said for Cobra Kai down the road."

I'm still enjoying the show though for different reasons than I did initially. S1 to me was a lot more grounded and while the story was technically the original retold (but with differences) at its core you had Miguel/Johnny and their father/son and sensei/student relationship which really drove the show. The Johnny/Daniel rivalry also felt more realistic with petty arguing and smaller issues resulting in conflict.

With S2 and especially S3, the little sense of reality that was there has been completely thrown out the window (or in through a window like the fight at the LaRusso's) in favor of making everything bigger. I get that Kreese is brainwashing these kids but there was zero setup for his gang to just show up and destroy the LaRusso house. How quickly these kids went from "no mercy" to out for bloodlust is just insane.

Small nitpick but in a show that's not very logical anymore (but I still enjoy it) I just couldn't buy the Ali/Johnny relationship when she showed up. Sure, many years have passed and I get that seeing someone from school you would see them in a different light but if you just watch the original and then Cobra Kai, it makes no sense when she starts talking about how good they used to have it. I'd buy that if it was Daniel she was seeing but not with Johnny.

How long were Ali and Johnny dating for before Daniel showed up? And for that matter how long was it in between the first and second Karate Kid when Ali and Daniel broke up?

Because yes, going by the show, Johnny seemed to have made the bigger impact in her life over Daniel, but since Daniel was our hero we assume he was the one that affected her most. But I also assume Johnny was her first love and when we see them in Karate Kid, they’ve been together for a while and we’re only really seeing the worst of it.

Kind of like if all we saw of Ali and Daniel’s relationship was the beginning of Part II.

In context Johnny and Ali only dated Junior Year of HS, but who knows they it could've been more than 2 years if they started as Sophomores. Thing is they probably went to school longer than that so Ali and Johnny probably knew each other even longer than they dated. Daniel didn't even show up to that school until that year.

Ali and Daniel are broken up right as soon as we get into the plot for KK2. So they really only dated for Senior Year until HS Prom. Or at least from the Tournament through Prom. Then they break up over her talking to a UCLA football player Daniel is in that powder blue tux when he tells Miyagi that. I thought the show said they were in college already. Could just be they messed up the timeline a little, or she meant they were on a college tour or something though. Still that means best case Ali and Daniel dated from say Labor day to Memorial day that year. Probably less than that. To her, while she may have fond memories of Daniel, it may be that he's just an ex.

Johnny had a lot more time to make a lasting impression.

Using that interpretation and their interaction at the Christmas party, it also means Daniel and Johnny should be able to move past her as a major source of conflict since they now both know they screwed up with her the same way. Johnny knows she thinks fondly upon their time together, and Daniel can no longer hold her up as a prize over Johnny's head because Daniel screwed up too and she doesn't seem interested in going back there. Should elevate Johnny some, and humble Daniel a bit.

Zabka is an excellent actor in this. Killed the role. The whole Hibachi scene to the silent reassuring nod he gives Daniel against Kreese. For all the cheese in this show the man clearly has solid range and deserves more roles
Hopefully with how huge of a success Cobra Kai is, it opens the doors for William Zabka to get more roles. He’s a great actor and has done an excellent job carrying this show. He’s demonstrated that he can do comedy, drama, and even the occasional action.

Got a question here. So I saw the first two seasons when the show was over at YouTube, and have really only seen & remember the first Karate Kid movie. Should I bother watching Karate Kid 2 and 3 before watching season 3?
