Hey just a little report on most of the film panels that have been held at comic con this year. Since the hype mainly covers superhero news, I thought I'd make a thread about the non superhero related films (though the superhero ones are included as well). Some photos will be up with a little bit of info about all of the panels I was able to attend. If you have any questions about the panel, feel free to ask (I'll do my best to remember what was said ;) ).

Thursday:
First panel I hit wasn't actually a film one, but it could wind up one someday. Rosario Dawson presented a new comic book she helped create called Occult Crimes Taskforce. Since this is about movies, she did happen to mention a few things about Grind House and Sin City 2. Though not much was revealed about Grindhouse (officially the panel is tomorrow) she did mention that the film will have a scratchy, drive-in theatre look and will be one of those "so cheesey it's good" films that QT and RR do so well. She also mentioned Sin City 2 was in fact holding out for Angelina Jolie and Robert was keen on having her star in Dame so she needed to have her baby first. They are shooting for a mid 2007 release date, but nothing is final yet...oh and she is definitely returning for Gale. :)

Oh and for those of you hoping to attend saturday's panels, Rosario mentioned being at the Grind House panel. I can't 100% confirm she will be there, but I think it very possible.

Next up was WB Animation: The Ant Bully, Happy Feet, and TMNT. Nothing really new was shown for the Ant Bully, just some concept art and the trailer that has already been running. Happy Feet showed some new clips and if you are DYING to know what they were about just ask me. But for now I'll just head right into TMNT. The teaser was shown (the one that is now online) as well as a 5 minute clip of unfinished animation. As far as the cast goes the turtles will be portrayed by unknowns because they wanted to find people who could really be true to the essence of the turtles. The design of the turtles is actually working more off of the old comics, they wanted them to really look like teenage brothers instead of burly men. The villian is NOT Shredder, though he makes a small appearance. Casey and April are of course in the film and the name main villian hasn't been revealed. The look of the human characters is a little more cartoony compared to the look of the city which is a liitle more realistic. The style of their faces is very angled (the men have square chins while the women are very sharp and v shaped in the face). Official release date is March 30. 2007.

Finally the Lionsgate panel: Skin Walkers, Crank, and Saw III. First was Skin Walkers which is a were wolf movie helmed by the same man who directed Jason X. A short clip was shown that didn't do too much to WOW the crowd. Not a whole lot was revealed story wise, but Stan Winston was on hand because he is heading up the creature effects. Stan said he was drawn to the film because it was unlike any other were wolf movie he had seen. Also he said the wolfs would not be cg, but actors in make up so they could convey the real emotions of the actors without it being obscured by special effects.

Next was Crank starring Jason Statham, Amy Smart, and Efferin Ramirez. They showed a short clip of Jason cutting a guys hand off and then using the hand (which was still gripping a gun) to shoot the back of the guys head. The film is about a hitman who is injected with a poison that will kill him in 90 minutes and in those 90 minutes he has to find out who did it to him and how he can stop it. It's very action packed and there is an enormous amount of stunt work that was involved with no help from green screen.

Last was Saw III with Tobin Bell, Shawnee Smith, directors Leig Whannell (Saw) and Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw II). They showed a 5 minute clip and introduced with a reassuring "we hope the mpaa lets us keep it the way it is" comment. The clip showed a guy recently captured by Jigsaw being held in a small room. He was chained up in the room and at the end of each chain was a ring, about the size of a golf ball, that was pierced through his skin at various tender spots like down the center of his bottom lip, through the tops of both hands, through the skin on his bisceps, shoulders, legs, and my favorite, through each achilles tenden. Jigsaw leaves our little friend a message about escaping the chains and emprisonment he has grown so accustomed to (the guys frequented prison apperntly). Finally the kicker, chain man realizes there is a bomb sitting across from him on a table and the timer is of course set for two minutes. As the timer starts counting down, the guy starts ripping out these chains one by one. We see multiple shots of skin being stretched, flesh torn, and one painful guy. After he has ripped out just about every chain (including the achilles, you know that hurt) there is only one left, the center of the lip. Basically by ripping out this chain he would be splitting his entire bottom half of his mouth in two. Just as he is a bout to rip the last chain out and the timer on the bomb is a second away from zero, the clip is cut. After the clip a little Q&A was held and the panel got to chose their favorite trap from both films. The jaw ripper head vice that Amanda wore was pretty much the favorite. Tobin acted creepy as he does so well and Leigh was surprisingly funny. Here are some pics of the panel, I took most of Shawnee because I am a huge Becker fan and I loved her on that show.

I imagine this is what its like to stare death in the face before it ends you sad little life

Oh and I completely spaced on Pan' Labyrinth, which is ironic since it was the main panel I was interested in seeing. Del Toro and Doug Jones were on hand for a Q&A, plus an extended (english) version of the trailer was shown with more glimpses into Pan's world. Trust me, this film is absolutely beautiful in a Alice and Wonderland meets Tim Burton kind of way. Doug and GDT talked a lot about the film and GDT explained why he likes to go back and do a film in spanish after doing mainstream films. Something was mentioned about Hellboy 2, it's still in talks with the studio and Del Toro is eager to do it if it happens. He says if it does, the story they have planned will be amazing and much better than the first. Also Doug was asked about the recent rumors of him playing the Silver Surfer and while he couldn't directly answer the question, he heavily hinted that it was in negotiations and his would love to do it.

Friday:

First up was The Reaping starring Hilary Swank and Anna Sophia Roth (Violet from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory). This is a supernatural thriller that follows Hilary Swank, a miracle debunker, to a town that is showing signs of the biblical plagues. Hilary is a scientist who is always searching for the logical and scientific reasoning behind certain phenomina. She travels to this town where she finds out there is a young girl who is supposedly linked to the devil (Roth). Signs of the biblical plagues start appearing like the rivers of blood, swarms of locusts (and there are a lot of them), etc. Apparently there are a lot of twists and turns as Hilary finds out not everything is as it seems.

The Reaping opens November 8, 2006

After that Bryan Singer took some time to talk about his future plans for Superman. Apparently nothing is set in stone yet and he and the studio are still in talks for future installments (the studio is probably a little hesitant due to the mediocre box office). He says that if he gets to do a sequel it will be much more action packed since the characters have now been re-established in the universe. He also showed a blooper reel that will appear on the dvd (imo the bloopers were better than the film). After some Q&A Bryan brought out veteran superman director Richard Donner. They showed a clip that never made it into Superman II since Donner wasn't on the project, but he had filmed this scene with the intention of including it in the second film. Basically Lois starts to notice the similarities between Clark and Superman so she test Clark. She tells him if he was really Superman he wouldn't let her die and she jumps out of the Daily Planet's window. As she's falling Clark races down onto the street with his super speed and opens the an awning with his x-ray vision. Lois falls onto the awning and bounces off it into a watermelon stand. While she's recovering Clark races back up into the Daily Planet office and pretends like he never left the window once. After the clip some more questions were asked and one fan even asked if he would ever return to the x franchise...Bryan's response was maybe because he would like to some day.

Now for Eragon. The film stars Edward Speleers (Eragon), Sienna Guillory (Arya), Garrett Hedlund (Murtagh), Djimon Hounsou (Ajihad), Jeremy Irons (Brom), John Malkovich (King Galbatorix), and Robert Carlyle (Durza). They showed some unfinished footage from the film and the dragons looked really well done and I must say Johnn Malkovich is one bad ass. There was some talk with Edward Speelers about his experiences on set and during the making of the video game. Speelers, a young unknown brit, was chosen from thousands of actors to play the part of Eragon. The movie opens December 15.

Okay the last one I'm going to cover tonight is Reno 911!:Miami. Dangle, Travis, and Trudy showed up and I have to say it was the funniest panle I have ever seen. They never once broke character and the clips they showed for the film were hilarious. Dangle and the guys kept acting like this was a serious documentary about them, but fox chose to delete all the good stuff and keep the stupid stuff to make them look like idiots. They showed a trailer as well which mocked the miami vice trailer. It was put togther in the same style with Numb playing in the background and it was pretty damn funny.
When they first came out, they tried to do the wave, but they kept screwing up the order so they had to do it 3 times before they got it right.

At the end of the panel Trudy stole all the complementary chocolates that are left on the tables for guests.

Also Travis pulled his gun on the fox guy because he was purposely using the film to make them all look like morons.

Did Guillermo Del Toro lose weight?!?

Reno 911... sweet. :D Wiegel and Dangle. :p

And Shawnee Smith... looking good as always.

wait did reno 911 appear on saturday and if so what time?

Okay after Reno was Pathfinder, a film about Vikings traveling to the americas and slaughtering natives. This particular group of vikings are very cruel and even scare other vikings. The look of the film is very dark and gritty and the vikings themselves are much more barberic looking. Karl Urban stars as a viking who was abandoned as a baby and raised by the natives. When his viking hord return he has to fight to defend his people from being slaughtered, but the vikings start to take notice to the similarities he has with their kind. The vikings speak Icelandic in the film so their speaking parts are subtitled. The director Marcus Nispel came to answer questions along with Carnivale actor Clancy Brown (this guy has the coolest voice) who plays the ruthless viking leader.

No current release date has been announced but it is shooting for a late 2006 release.

Now for Stardust. Director Matthew Vaughn couldn't make it to the panel, but Neil Gaiman was on hand to answer questions as well as the other production members.
Here's an official synopsis:
Vaughn co-wrote the script with Jane Goldman and will produce and direct the fantasy film based on Neil Gaiman's novel. The story follows Tristan Thorn, a young man who goes into the magical realm of Faerie in order to retrieve a fallen star. While searching for the star, he has to escape from evil witches, goblins, and the terrible sons of the deceased Lord of Stormhold
The film stars unknown Charlie Cox (Tristian), Claire Danes (Yvaine),
Robert De Niro (Captain Shakespeare, he's a new character added by Neil for the film), Sienna Miller (Victoria), Michelle Pfeiffer (Lamia), and Jason Flemyn (Primus). Oh and Tori Amos has apart in it as well.
The clips they showed were unfinished, the special effects hadn't been added yet. They first played a clip of Tristan coming to Victoria's home at night with a boquet of flowers, but he fails misserabley. Then we saw the scene where Tristan tries to cros the wall, but he get the crap beat out of him by the guy who played Uncle Joe in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It was actually a cute clip. Then Michelle's first scene was played, she used her powers on a local, but since the effects weren't in yet we couldn't see what she was doing. Then a scene with Robert DeNiro was played, his character was actually pretty funny, in a DeNiro sort of way. They also showed a Montage at the end with some effects added in. The film looks like it is coming along nicely and it will be interesting to see how the finished product looks.

Stardust opens next year and the official website is now up, though there isn't much there.
www.stardustmovie.com

As an added note Gaiman happened to mention a little fim called Beowulf ;)
He said the films is looking great so far and even though it is being filmed with the Polar Express' technology, it will be a very violent film...as it should be.
