EXCLUSIVE: 20th Century Fox is going Commando again, setting David Ayer to write and direct a reboot of the 1985 film that became one of the building blocks that transformed Arnold Schwarzenegger from bodybuilder to superstar. Erwin Stoff and John Davis will produce the new version.

Ayer is the former Navy soldier who wrote Training Day and moved into directing with the dark dramas Harsh Times and Street Kings. He will put his own real-world spin on this original premise: a retired elite special forces operative sees his daughter kidnapped and is told she’ll die unless he gets on a plane and kills the rival of a nasty exiled dictator. In the original, Schwarzenegger jumped off the plane before takeoff, and killed everyone involved in the kidnap plot, in a real beefcake turn that followed Terminator. Ayer’s protagonist will be less brawny, but more skilled in covert tactics and weaponry. Hopefully the new version will hang onto some of the fun spirit of the original, the first of several film collaborations between Schwarzenegger and producer Joel Silver where they blew up everything in sight. Rae Dawn Chong played the flighty flight attendant who became the commando's reluctant accomplice, Dan Hedaya played the diabolical dictator, and a young Alyssa Milano played the kidnapped daughter.

It's the second big reboot of an Arnie action film for Fox. The studio has a July 9 release date on Predators, a new chapter of a franchise launched by Predators, the 1987 Schwarzenegger classic.

Really people.
I mean really. Commando is one of those moovies that is so stupid that it's awesome . Remaking this ....christ :cmad:

this sounds absolutely terrible. Commando is one of those movies that's so stupid that it's awesome. But if you make it 'real' then you lose that charm.

Exactly.
Commando is the very defination of dumb 80's action flick. It has it's charm
Arnie and a woman in a car with no roof and without a suitbealt going after the bad guys driving 60 mph. Slams his car in a tree or electric pole ( i forget) and walks away withouta scratch.

for god's sakes, Arnie rips out a telephone booth from the ground. haha. then he beats up/kills mall security guards who just doing their jobs, and paying the rent for their families. ahhahahaha.

Ok you know what. A lot of morons complained for years that Lucas was raping there child hood. Well I am 32 years old. I grew up on all these cotdang movies being remade. & having to listen to all these children talk about how there sh** is more realistic. Therefore better. Well that is rape folks.

George Lucas has nothing...NOTHING! on Hollywood.

Dumb idea. Commando's a classic and it should never be touched by anyone but Arnold is he wishes to return to the role.

Sully, remember when I said I would kill you last? I lied.

The difference is, Lucas won't even release the Star Wars films in their original, un-Special Edition form! You can't get the films pre-special edition anymore! At least remakes are trying to make the original films unavailable to people! If anything, they take remakes as an opportunity to promote and sell the original films.

When your VHS tapes of the original Star Wars (no new CGI, no Greedo shooting first, no awkward Jabba inclusion, no replacement of the Ewok song, no replacement of original Anakin Skywalker actor with Hayden Christensen) burn out or break, that's it. That's all she wrote!

I don't think it's all that stupid to remake 20 year old b-movies that fans self-designate "classics". Yes, I enjoy the original for the killfest that it is, but come on people. It's not like a remake would be all that different from something like "The Marine".

As with all remakes, you don't like it, don't watch it and let it go the way of Tom Wellings The Fog.

2 things:

1. You can get the originals on DVD.

2. Give it time. The studios will start phasing out the originals. Just out of curiousity. How many remade movies have the origianls on Blue Ray?

Actually. You can't. You have to buy the versions of the movie that you don't want to, to then only get a **** version of the originals that are tacked on to the dvds.

As in. Not dvd quality, you'd be better off with any VHS versions you recorded off television.

EDIT: But are there at least active plans to release them on blu-ray? No one else is waiting for the DVD format to be completely be phased out. But it seems like that's what Lucas is doing. How much anticipation does he really need to build up. He knows full well a blu-ray release of the original trilogy, including whatever special features exist on previous DVD releases, would be one of (if not the) biggest selling blu-rays ever.

Just in terms of horror; The Crazies, Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, A Nightmare On Elm Street, Halloween, Friday The 13th(and all the early sequels), Death Race 2000, My Bloody Valentine, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Omen, The Stepfather, The Fog, etc.

And most of these are remastered and packed to the gills with special features with documentaries and current interviews with casts and filmmakers. Real time and effort is going into most of these releases.

Fair enough. Are there at least active plans to release them on blu-ray?

Great points across the board. I honestly can't think of a recent remake that didn't have the original re-released on disk around the time of release.

Fair enough. I still get a sinking feeling that we will see a phase out of the originals eventually. I could be wrong though. I hope I am. Just in case though I have bought all the movies I loved that have been remade.

Like some crazy person stocking up on food for the impending end.

NO! You can't spend years pissing & moaning about Lucas making changes, then cry when he gives you exactly what you want.

REC.

He didn't give people want they wanted. He gave them another release of the Special Editions with tacked on crap versions of the originals.

You'd have to be completely stupid to not see how that release isn't what people have asked for for years.

People wanted the original cuts. He gave them that. If he had transfered it to DVD to polished, then people would be complaing about that.

Not understanding your logic, but at least you liken yourself to some crazy person stocking up on food for the impending end, so as to imply that your fears about studios phasing out original films that have been remade, are somewhat irrational.

Provided you also buy the special edition versions. But to be fair, $25.00 (now, anyway) for a six-disc set, even if you only count the tree discs you really want, is a pretty good deal to tide you over until Lucas decides to put out a blu-ray package, which he really does need to do.
