Conan Exiles announced for PC and consoles

Open-world survival game hitting Early Access this summer.

Funcom has announced Conan Exiles, an open-world survival game set in the lands of Conan the Barbarian. It will launch for PC via Steam Early Access in summer 2016, with a full launch on PC and consoles to follow.
Here’s a description, via Funcom:
An open-world survival game in the brutal lands of Conan the Barbarian.

You are an exile, one of thousands cast out to fend for themselves in a barbaric wasteland swept by terrible sandstorms and besieged on every side by enemies. Here you must fight to survive, build and dominate.

Hungry, thirsty and alone, your very first battle is that against the harsh environment. Grow crops or hunt animals for food. Harvest resources to build weapons and tools. Build a shelter to survive. Ride across a vast world and explore alone, or band together with other players to build entire settlements and strongholds to withstand fierce invasions.

When strong enough, march forth into battle and wage war against your enemies as you fight to dominate the exiled lands. Sacrifice enemy players on the altars of the gods and shift the balance of power your way. Unleash your fury in savage, fast-paced combat and execute bloody and bone-crushing attacks that will see heads rolling and limbs flying.

Survive. Build. Dominate.
Play alone in single-player mode, or forge alliances and make enemies online on both public and private servers.
Will you dominate the exiled lands or will your enemies sacrifice you on the altar of their god?

Funcom shares more Conan Exiles details in a community Q&A

March 11, 2016 38 Comments

If you’re eager for more information about Conan Exiles, you missed out on your chance to take an active hand in the game’s recent community Q&A session on Facebook. Of course, the bright side is that the results of said Q&A session are still available for everyone to read, providing a few tantalizing details about the upcoming survival sandbox. And yes, if you’re wondering, the game will feature nudity, albeit just topless nudity at this time (other areas of human anatomy are “up for discussion”).

Combat and gameplay will be skill-based rather than class-based; sorcery will be in the game, but players may not be able to access it themselves. Gear will have an impact, but the primary focus is upon player skill and performance. There will also be a number of different options for players hosting servers regarding how open PvP can be and how harsh the penalties for death will be. So while the game is meant to err on the side of brutality, it need not be an unfriendly experience depending on the wishes of the server host.

Exiles : Bringing Savage Hyboria to Tabletops Everywhere

Posted Mar 16, 2016

Funcom is working with Modiphius and Free League Publishing to bring a sourcebook based on its Conan Exiles IP to table top gamers everywhere.
The CONAN EXILES tie-in sourcebook will adapt areas and gameplay from CONAN EXILES to Modiphius’ 2d20 roleplaying game. Developed in partnership with Funcom's CONAN EXILES team and Free League Publishing (the designers of the Ennie award-winning Mutant: Year Zero), this sourcebook adapts the critically-acclaimed community development system from Mutant: Year Zero to the rigours of the Hyborian Age.

In both CONAN EXILES and the sourcebook, the heroes face a brutal and extreme challenge: survival in an isolated and arid land, attempting to find food, water and shelter, before building a community that might endure against the threat of neighbouring kingdoms.

Vote for your favorite Conan Exiles hair styles

May 17, 2016 9 Comments

Hair matters. If you know nothing else, know that hair matters. Players judge you severely based on what style you pick from the character creator, and the right ‘do could make the difference between your acceptance into high society or a lifetime sentence of drinking gutter water and chasing cats off your lawn.

OK, maybe hair styles aren’t that important, but they do reflect personality and choice. Upcoming survival sandbox Conan Exiles posted a number of proposed styles for both male and female characters, asking players to vote for which one they like the best just in case they can’t all get in by the game’s early access launch.

Which ones did you like the best? And how metal are those names? Battle Braids, come on!

Exiles : Early Access Delayed Until January 2017

Posted Jun 26, 2016

Earlier this week, Funcom's Joel Bylos posted a brief note on the Conan Exiles Facebook page that let players know that, despite hopes of bringing the Early Access version of the Hyborian survival title to Steam in September, the team feels that it needs more time to flesh out its vision for the game world.

As a result, Early Access will kick off in January 2017 instead.
We have come to realize that we would like to spend a little more time creating our vision of Hyboria before we release it into Early Access. Having very recently secured additional funding for our studio which has made our financial situation much more flexible than even just a few weeks back, we want to take advantage of that and move Early Access to January 2017. With the extra time in development, we believe we can make a better game for you, the fans.
Our observations of Early Access are that it tends to run in two directions. In one case, the games are buggy, unstable and unfinished. In another case, the games are stable, well featured and the community and development team work together to map out the future of the project towards a successful launch. Our aim is to deliver a game that is firmly in the second situation and creates a quintessential Conan experience.
Read the full post on the Conan Exiles Facebook page.
Seems like a good move to us. More funding, more time equals a better game in the end. What do you think?
Sorry we missed this earlier in the week, folks, but it came in the day we were down for maintenance.[FONT=arial !important]

Conan Exiles demos progress with incredible new screenshots

November 15, 2016 46 Comments

Funcom announced this morning that it’s partnered with NVIDIA to make Conan Exiles’ screenshots damn pretty for VR players. Heck, they’re pretty for everyone.

“In less than three months, gamers everywhere will get to follow in the bloodstained footsteps of the world’s greatest fantasy hero as Conan Exiles, Funcom’s upcoming open-world survival game, hacks and slashes its way into Early Access,” the PR reads. “The development team is currently hard at work bringing the world of Conan to life, and today Funcom released a collection of new screenshots which captures just how far the game has progressed visually the past few months.”

Conan Exiles is one of several games the MMORPG studio has undertaken in the Conan and Secret World IPs; early access is planned for January. The game will launch in English, German, French, Spanish, Russian, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese. Check out those screenshots, plus the even more massive ones on the NVIDIA website!Read more

Conan Exiles answers questions about its upcoming early access launch

November 29, 2016 Justin Olivetti 25 Comments

With Conan Exiles’ early access launch just around the corner, you can better believe that the community has a mountain of questions about the survival sandbox.

Funcom’s Joel Bylos stepped into the Xbox One Reddit yesterday to tackle many of these, although some, like queries about pricing, he declined to answer (Conan Exiles won’t have microtransactions or a sub, however).
Bylos said that the primary inspiration for the game comes straight from Robert E.

Howard’s books. “Conan Exiles has a tighter focus on melee combat, a world that can be explored to find lore and stories, a religion system that allows access to magic and god avatars, a thrall system that allows you to enslave and turn your enemies into allies,” Bylos said. “Oh and no flying mounts, because those tend to make the world too small.”

Players will have a wide range of rulesets from which to choose, with each server hosting up to 70 players apiece during the early access period.

Conan Exiles discusses character creation and your list of crimes

December 6, 2016 20 Comments

Conan Exiles’ latest dev blog is all about first steps… yours. Specifically, it’s about the character creation and earliest stages of the game, and just to get you in the mood, Funcom has peppered the piece with screenshots of crucified characters. Never forget you’re just rolling a meat popsicle, right?!

The studio says it’s “drawing on [its] MMORPG expertise to create something new” for the multiplayer sandbox survival genre. While we’ll start with a few prefab faces in character creation, we can tweak them to our specifications. “At the moment we have 11 hairstyles, a wide range of skin colors and 14 races and ethnicities, all drawn from Robert E. Howard’s universe and offered to the players from the very beginning,” explains Funcom. “Offering a large number of options for players is very important to us.”

What’s intriguingly unique about the system is that you also get to choose the crimes for which you’ve been sentenced to death. They’re not all horrific; the screenshot shows a few amusing ones, including “debauchery” and “cultural appropriation,” which we’re going to assume is eyes-open, self-deprecatory humor for a studio that’s been working in Howard’s universe for a decade.

Conan Exiles infographic details the thin barriers between you and death

December 8, 2016 36 Comments

Turns out yesterday’s Conan Exiles survival video wasn’t the only thing Funcom had in store on the topic. Today, the studio’s put out a new dev blog and infographic to bookend the visuals, though let’s be honest, we all know you were just clicking for the dancing thralls.

“Tribes, bandits, mercenaries, pirates, and other lowlife scum all call the Exiled Lands their home, but if you are playing on a player vs. player server the most dangerous threat to survival will be your fellow players. They can hunt you down wherever you are and smash your houses into the ground. Building strong defenses may not be enough to save you so the greatest defense is working together with others and forming a clan.

Together you can build castles or even whole villages. You can further bolster your defenses by capturing NPCs and turn them into thralls on the Wheel of Pain. Thralls can defend your walls as archers, help you craft more powerful equipment, or help you recover from the rigors of battle as entertainers. The world of Hyboria has many gods, and through their worship you gain access to the most powerful weapons of all – their avatars! Assault the strongholds of your enemies with an army of friends and devastating siege engines before unleashing the embodiment of your god upon their pitiful souls.”

And hey, if you were wondering just how much slavery is going to matter in the game, MOP reader Nordavind got an answer from the gods themselves:

Funcom is plotting a Conan Exiles branded Dark Horse comic

December 15, 2016 9 Comments

Are we hyped for Funcom’s Conan Exiles yet? Are we excited to dive into the thrilling brutality promised by the sandbox survival game? Bummer because it’s not out for another six weeks, and even then only in early access. But how about a comic book in the meantime?

Yep, Funcom announced it’s joined up with Dark Horse to produce a Conan Exiles digital comic, also set to release in January. This isn’t the first time Funcom’s done this, either; you’ll recall that Dark Horse collaborated on the comic ahead of Age of Conan’s original launch way back in 2008 too. Hey, Age of Conan. How’s it going. You gonna help dad with the new baby? Awesome. Hang in there, buddy.

Funcom is also pushing tomorrow’s 1 p.m. EST stream, during which it’s promised to demo thrall gameplay for the first time. Until then, here’s that comic cover:

Conan Exiles shows off its crafting and thrall systems

December 21, 2016 14 Comments

What are MMO NPCs good for, really? Usually they’re either part of the quest system, trainers or vendors, or targets for our sharp, pointy weapons.

Conan Exiles is looking to expand on those interactions by allowing players to capture certain NPCs and drag them back into their camp to install them as thralls. Slaves. You’re capturing slaves.

The thrall system will be NPC-only during next year’s early access while Funcom figures out the best way to handle player thralls. In a new video, you can see the first display of the thrall system in the survival sandbox in addition to a tour around a player-created village, crafting, and combat.

Check out the making of a village and hear about all of these systems after the jump! The thrall capture action starts at the 42-minute mark.

Age of Conan composer Knut Avenstroup Haugen to helm Conan Exiles soundtrack

December 22, 2016 10 Comments

[YT]JL2IHURfCbU[/YT]
Funcom’s getting the crew back together for Conan Exiles! Well, part of the crew: The studio announced today that it’s roped in Age of Conan composer Knut Avenstroup Haugen to write Conan Exiles’ doom-filled melodies.

Haugen’s AoC soundtrack won multiple mainstream awards and is a fan-favorite around here — in fact, the last time we asked you what your favorite MMORPG soundtrack was, Age of Conan literally topped the list, beating out World of Warcraft, Guild Wars 2, WildStar, and the rest.

You can pick it up on Amazon or catch snippets in our own Jukebox Heroes column and the Battle Bards podcast while you wait for the new game, due out in January. Here’s a favorite tune plus a sample from the upcoming tracks!

In Conan Exiles, 'home is where you keep the hearts of your enemies'

January 6, 2017 51 Comments

January's the month: Conan Exiles hits early access on the 31st as Funcom's latest Conan-franchise game, this one an unabashed survival sandbox with a bit of MMORPG flair. (Xbox One players will be waiting until spring, unfortunately!) The team has a new video out today in which Joel Bylos and Lead Designer Oscar Lopez Lacalle talk up the game's building gameplay, tools, and mechanics.

The duo say that outposts and homes are mission-critical not just for keeping your loot and your guildies safe but also for kicking back and playing the decorating game. Players will be doing much more than just plopping down a prefab house; in fact, you'll basically be building it brick by brick, voxel-style -- and tearing your enemies' buildings down the same way.

"They say home is where the heart is," Bylos deadpans at the end, "but in Conan Exiles, home is where you keep the hearts of your enemies."
