I understand that Max Shea and the rest of the crew unknowingly helped formulate Ozymadias' plan for the creature, but how exactly did it come about?

I got the impression that the artists' were duped into believing they were working on a movie project. From the drawing of the creature, how was it manifested physically?

I think they designed it on a purely aesthetic level. Veidt is the only one with the scientific knowledge the pull off its actual creation.
