About 95% people believe Hugh Jackman was a great Wolverine, I disagree. I grew up with the 90's Animated Series and the actual comic books themselves.

Let's discuss Wolverine and the real character.

Wolverine was not a pretty boy, that all the women fall in love with. That is my main problem with Hugh Jackman. Hugh Jackman is a 6 foot tall pretty boy that came from Broadway who women fall for. That is completely not Wolverine. His mere presence , no matter how great of an actor he is, just is not the Wolverine character. It doesn't matter how much he bulks up, or how much he makes the anger face, it doesn't work. If I had the option of hiring Hugh Jackman, I would honestly thought he would make a better Cyclops!

The Character of Wolverine is very similar to Marv from Sin City. He was a rugged, ugly, older, maniac who had a major problem with authority and sort of an animal, who couldn't not get the girl, Jean rejected him, he was a complete loner. He hated the world around him and sort of joined the X-Men because deep down, he secretly admired Xaiver. He knew that he would never lead any of the team, he knew he couldn't win the beautiful Jean Grey, he knew that no one cared for him, but however he believed in the same ideology that Xaiver created.

Not only did the miscast Wolverine, but by the third movie, you almost believe Wolverine was running the X-Men ! Which was completely out tune with the comics / cartoon / mythology. Wolverine was sort of a backbone of the team, the one that did all the dirty work. He was no leader and never cared to be one. He was a guy that was the rebel in the background. It just so happened that people loved the rebel in the background so much, the writers / film makers just couldn't help by making him the star of the show when in fact that's not what it was. Wolverine was an icon for the thrashing he put on the bad guys that crossed the path of X-Men.

Another thing, Hugh Jackman was wayyy too sensitive. Hugh Jackman's greatest performance was The Fountain, which required him to be ultra sensitive. He was perfect for that. In X-Men, he was way too sensitive. He had feelings for Jean, then Rogue, and he cried. It was so awful to see those scenes because it was just film makers screwing up a great character.

So now that you read all that and are ready to call me an a-hole, nerd, too much time on my hands, need a girlfreind (im married btw), I suppose the question is "Well, if you're so smart, than who do you choose as Wolverine"..

Well, I would look like a hypocrite if I were to avoid that question. Would I pick an unknown? No, I wouldn't.... I can choose someone right now that I believe could have been a better Wolverine.....

Logan was puling chicks way before Hugh Jackman was cast

He was pulling chicks so I dont think he was ugly. And while he is older he shouldnt look the part. How did he admire Xavier having just met him. He also did fall in love with Mariko and almost married her,

While I agree the films became Logan-centric after HJ became a big star there hav been several times when Wolverine has led the Xmen temporarily when the team went to San Fran to save Maddie from the Marauders.

I never thought he had feelings for Rogue. I just took it as him forming a bond with the junior female...like he did with Kitty and Jubilee in the comics

I dont see it in him

I think that Hugh Jackman would have been a much better Wolverine if the writers had not completely dismantled the character by X-3.

Jackman is perfect is the first movie.....by the third, he is not playing Logan at all, he is playing Hugh Jackman the Action Hero, jokes and all.

Can't agree more with this thread. You nailed it! And just for reminders, Logan originally was completely pyhcotic, prone to "berserker rages" that he couldn't even trust himself. A "true" wolverine, look the creature up, short, mean, and a loner. Remember Marv needed his meds and couldn't trust his own eyes. He became widely popular after Byner casted him as a Clint Eastwood type vs. the Hellfire Club. Banshee was my fav back then. Roach is just plain wrong.

They approached Wolverine from a different angle is why. It's like Raimi's Spider-Man. Sure, he always moped about his burden, but not to such an extreme that he isn't even quipping during his fights. Wolverine lacked the arrogance and the plain old bada$$ery. Nuff said.

I am wrong because.......

He is good. But not as good as the "nobody else could play Wolverine as well" hyperbole fanboys give him.

He is good, but surpassable. That is my opinion.

He was an ok Wolverine but It seems people really dont know the character of Wolverine

Thanks SPidey-Quad for the excellent reply.

Thing is, no-one else has ever played Wolverine (except in voice-overs). So we have nothing to compare it to. With Christopher Reeve, you have numerous other Superman actors, and the same with Bond and Batman and so on.

It's hard to say how good Jackman really is as Wolverine until we have something to compare it to. Everything is relative.

Animated Series and Comic Books are my source material. And based on that particular character, no way Hugh Jackman was a good Wolverine.

Michael Wincott, Mickey Rourke, guys like that would do so much of a better job, imo...

I disagree by the second movie he was playing Hugh Jackman playing Wolverine from the first movie where Hugh Jackman was playing Wolverine!!!!:hehe:

:lmao::lmao::lmao:

yea, I agree. Jackman was a pretty terrible Wolverine.

Don't know about Michael Wincott, but no, I didn't like Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. He overacted too much, he didn't play the role naturally. I found myself laughing at him at times.

He was a joke.

...whereas - hah! - this really isn't.

Yeah, the difference is the Wolverine below has more clothes.

agreed with the notion that Hugh Jackman got progressively worse with each film. But some could argue that wasn't his fault

I see it like this, Hugh played a better Wolvie in X1, but X2 is the better film overall. X3 and XOW don't count :word:

now it's time to recast and reboot the X Men franchise as a whole.

Yeah, the difference is the Wolverine below has more clothes.

The difference is that in the first movie, he was portrayed as a very dangerous, angry guy who one should steer clear of. A loose canon who threatened everyone usually seconds after meeting them. In the third movie, he is a very typical Hollywood action hero. He's almost cuddly in X3, gone from dangerous to everyone to just a bit gruff and sarcastic. Hugh Jackman acts in X1, he coasts on his action movie hero charisma in X3.

I have always said, the best part of the entire X-Men movie franchise is the first twenty or so minutes of X-Men, until Logan's truck explodes. It's as real and believable as anything in Nolan's Batman movies, it shows Magneto, Rogue and Logan as real people you can believe exist.
