Consumed - Is Our Consumer Culture Leading to Disaster?

Consumerism has become the cornerstone of the post-industrial age. Yet how much do we know about it and what it is doing to us? Using theories of evolutionary psychology to underpin a bold narrative of our times, this film takes a whirlwind tour through the "weird mental illness of consumerism", showing how our insatiable appetite has driven us into "the jaws of the beast". Both an apocalyptic and redemptive view of the human condition.

Journeyman Pictures is your independent source for the world's most powerful films, exploring the burning issues of today. We represent stories from the world's top producers, with brand new content coming in all the time. On our channel you'll find outstanding and controversial journalism covering any global subject you can imagine wanting to know about.

This is the story of the western man and his never ending hunger for materialistic possessions.

While Consumerism does play a part in our nations economic woes, it's hardly the catalyst which would lead to it's destruction. I am FAR more concerned over our self-obsession and lack of empathy.

I believe those are in a direct relation with the consumerist indoctrination that we are subjected from a young age.
It may not be the catalyst for our destruction, but it sure causes a hell a lot of environment pollution and depletion of earth's finite resources. Not to mention the thousand labor victims that work to produce all those goods for pennies.

I can agree on that. It does lead to a wasteful attitude and a lack of appreciation and contentment for the things they already have.

From an environmental standpoint we are one of the most wasteful nations on earth, like you said...it leads to a lot of pollution.

Unfortunately all of the developed countries are contributors to the world pollution due to relentless consumerism.

Aside from recycle technologies I don't really see there being much change in our habits. Unless we can somehow change the mindset of people in general and that would take generations.

Definitely.
Indoctrination to the detrimental habits of consumerism starts at the moment a baby is born and it is essentially in our blood.
