Cosplay only serves to re-enforce the notion that direct translations of costumes/designs from games/cartoons look absolutely ridiculous.

This is one of the best Kaneda's I've ever seen.

Too bad he's not facing forward.

Here some more I found. They are mostly video game characters though.

Every thing was a vid game but this one. It's a series. That's Jo from Burst Angel, and the series sucks. I collect it and I hate it! :down

I wish I had a scanner...

Oh Shiz.. my mom has some...

I scan my pics from Otakon 2004 when I go over later. There was a kick as DBZ, Full Metal, and some other ones...

THis one was... He had diff wigs for levels and crap. He was kinda cute too..

Aerith

Edward Elric (we should get him in the same room as that Alfonze cosplayer)

The Japanese do cosplay so much better than everyone else.

Here are some of my pics from Otakon...

Otakon04FullMetalAlchemist.jpg

Full Metal Alchemist Ed/Al
Otakon04DontKnowEither.jpg

We Weren't really sure what this was, maybe Tsubasa?
Otakon04HarveyBirdMan.jpg

Harvey Bird Man!
Otakon04IReallyDontKnow.jpg

We Weren't sure about this either, but they were cute!
Otakon04Pacman.jpg

The Giant Pacman Pwnd all! It was soo funny too. He would walk around, and all you could see was his leg, and when people stopped him, he would squat down. Hilarious.
Otakon04InuyashaKouga.jpg

Here's one of like 3 Kouga's (Inuyasha) I saw. He was the best
Otakon04FinalFantasy10II.jpg

Here's Riku (I think) from Final Fantasy X-II ... She was one of many...

Yeah, most of us americans suck at Cosplay outside of things like Star Wars and stuff like that. Asians definately have the Anime/Videogame inspired costumes down.

Another Haku & Zabuza. Why did you two have to die? :(

Oaky would probably know more about this than me but I beleive in Japan it's and actual culture or a sub-culture of sorts. In America it just appears to be a type of novelty or something....something to do for fun basicly. So they don't take it as seriously as the Japanese seem to do.

That's my take on it anyway......

FOr the most part, you're right...

But I haven't gotten to show ya'll the ultimate costume yet!!

I've only seen one picture of an "Ultimate Cosplay" and that was a Sephiroth, I swear the guy looked the part. He had every detail right down to the one black wing.

I wish I could find it.....

On a side note, American Otakus need to shower more often:(. I went to Otakon one year and I was stuck between two of them in line.....it was like a funk sandwich.

...but I beleive your a cleanly person Oaky:up: :p

Another thing Otakus can be nasty/mean mother****ers when you don't know much about Anime.

Also, I think that the quality of Japanese cosplayer's costumes is largely to do with the fact that there are a lot of perfectionists over there. Most people here in the 'states simply grab some cardboard and electrical tape, and then call it a day.

God help us... "Man Fay" got interviewed on tonight's Leno at the "Who wants to be a Superhero" auditions report.

Seeing his hairy @$$ girate on screen has left me permanantly mentally scarred.

Actually, a very good amount of cosplayers costumes over there are store bought. When your costumes are being professionally manufactured they tend to turn out well.

The Japanese tend to look down on "ugly" cosplayers as well. The typical attitude is if you're not pretty then you shouldn't be cosplaying.

Also, the general public considers most cosplayers otaku (remember being an otaku is a pretty bad thing over there.) Cosplaying is kinda restricted to certain places and events. You won't see them walking the streets or going beyond the walls of the cosplay event/convention in costume. They get dressed/undressed at the event because they wouldn't dare wear their costume on the train or in public. It's a pretty standard practice for the cosplay events to have dressing booths setup for them.
