There was pressure from the state attorney gerneral to close the section because people used it to solicit prostitution. Craigslist put a black bar with the word censored where the adult services link used to be.

So is this a censorship issue or is Craigslist just ******** because they'll lose some traffic and ad revenue?

If this section is being used to solicit prostitutes, it's against the law, it gets shut down. Well, unless you live in certain counties in Nevada. It's pretty simple. If you can't go down to your local street corner and solicit a hooker, why should it be legal to do it online?

Personally, I don't think prostitution should be illegal. If that's what a woman wants to do, fine by me. I'm also for regulating the profession, to keep it safe. Like they do in Nevada.

Good. I hope this includes the other services like casual encounters and what not

I agree with every single word of this post.

It's not censorship if it's illegal. It'd get shut down if people were selling crack on craigslist also.

And prostitution should be legal. Though I'm still open to debate on the subject of legalizing crack.

I guess it was also used for human trafficking (or so I've heard), so if that is the case then it is good that they took it down.

Supposedly people were using Craigslist adult services section to traffic teenage girls around according to CNN.

Craigslist has always been a seedy place, but most of the populous still uses it regardless. We know it's the bottom of the barrel, but we're still not ashamed to say we use it for stuff.

Prostitution should be legal, taxed and regulated but as it is not they really shouldn't have a section for it. This is a responsible move IMO.

They've probably reduced the homicide rate in the process too.

I know. That's people not thinking with their heads.

Prostitution is always going to exist. By forcing it underground, you increase the likelyhood of STD's, violence and drugs.

The only rational, sane, intelligent way of handling prostitution is legalization. Anything else is as absurd as criminalizing marijuana or alcohol.

exactly, legalize it and for people caught doing it illegally, it's automatice25 years in prison with no chance of perole. It would stop real fast.

Damn. Now how am I supposed to get laid?! :oldrazz:

I think this was a long time coming. I'm surprised that they haven't shut down the casual encounters portion of it because that's where all the people who offered erotic services are gonna go now.

I mean prostitution is illegal. The cops see a hooker on the corner soliciting sex they arrest her. It's pretty logical here, haha.

True enough in regards to them just finding a loophole on another listing on the site.

I think that the incident with "The Craigslist Killer" played a factor in that site shutting down adult services. Would not surprise me if that was true.

And Craig's List has just become unprofitable. :funny:

Since it is a profession for them, a lot of prostitutes protect themselves against STDs. I remember when a researcher came to my criminology class and told us that prostitutes are actually more likely to catch STDs from significant others than from clients. Basically, prostitutes are not as disease-ridden as some would think.

So basically anyone who may disagree with you is absolutely wrong?

Why all the face palms towards taxing prostitution

It's how it's done in European countries, the Netherlands being the foremost in that area and really it's not a big ****ing deal.

If people want to engage in that activity willfully between two consenting adults with money involved then fine, tax it, get some money out of it and put that money to good use like the Dutch do... no major problems over there with regards to this issue.

We as Americans hate the thought of any of our vices being taxed, that's why.
