Crash Vs American History X

Crash is one of the best films I have ever seen and I regret not seeing it in theaters. I was worried about seeing it at first because of all the hate the film gets from fanboys. If this had flopped or not won any awards then I think it would be much more well recieved around here.

American History X was majorly dissapointing. All the complaints against crash fits this film to a T. Overly simplistic and offensive towards whites. This movie is the epitome of after school special. Apparently if you belive this film all racists whites are mad because the black kids beat them up and take over there basketball games. If the director had done any true research into the various white power movements he would realize just how far off base he really was. I think thats why the flim is praised so much around here. It gives whites hope that racism is not that big a deal and if you get raped you will suddenly stop being racist.

Its script has about as many flaws as Bush's plan for Iraq has. Paul Haggis is a hack.

Gee, way to take random scenes from the film at face value. To simplify the whole argument to the basketball scene is to ignore the many arguments the skinheads put forth towards their anger of minorities, affirmative action, hiring of illegal immigrants, rising rates in minority crime. A variety of topics were touched upon beyond black kids taking over a basketball court.

Crash was such freakin garbage it makes me crazy when I hear all of the accolades. And I wrote an 8 page paper on it for one of my psych classes, so I'm not just picking on the movie without reason.

American History X is so much better.

Are you guys white? The only reason I ask this is because in my experience all the guys that are like OMG LIKE THIS MOVIE IS SO AWSOME111 are white. While most nonwhites I know are more like "meh' or "it was ok". And crash seems to be favored by many different ethnic groups.

No, just intelligent enough to understand that CRASH is extremely flawed and is paper-thin when it comes to character development. Please enlighten us as to how CRASH is in anyway innovative or meaningful in a credible manner and I'll retract my statements.

Whoa! I think this thread has as many holes as Bushs plan for attack, I didn't know that people existed who disliked ether one of these movies.

I would say AHX is the lesser movie, only because of the stories of Ed Norton sabatoging the movie and re-editing it so he would have more screen time, if something like that where to happen in a movie something had to be weird with it. So that is my only reasoning, I like both alot

It's a faux-intelligent, over-sentimental movie that manipulates its viewers and doesn't earn the emotional reactions that it asks for from its audience. The scene in which the little girl is almost shot by the storeowner in front of her father comes to mind as a perfect example of this. Every single one of its characters is underdeveloped and none of them has any evident character arc. It's a simple, deceptive movie for the easily-deceived, simple-minded person.

FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS, which was also written by Paul Haggis, suffers from this same thing. What a coincidence...

Now I think you are taking a little to much away from Crash here, no one character was the main importance, it was the idea that was what the movie was about. Now I do Agree on some levels, because Matt Dillon is the only one who goes through a complete character arch (Which is quite good), but it's like Snatch, how many complete character archs are there in that movie? Two at best? Mikey's, and Turkish, but every character becomes part of this intrical plot. It's a hyperlink movie, and the plot, and general idea is what is most important, as apposed to an ensemble movie where the characters in relation to the plot is the most important thing.

wow. i guess i shouldn't be surprised based on your views presented in X3 V. SR thread, but still. do you even care about subtext, or symbolism?

that being said. i liked both these movies a lot. American History X is better, delivers a bit more through a relativley simple story and leaves you a little more shaken.
