Recently I began to have an interesting in using the Photoshop CS4 program to try to create an animated GIF out from AVI and Quicktime files. However, after I imported the file over to CS4, the screen is blank. I've heard that I need another program to edit the file before I can edit it on CS4, but I can't find out what program it is, so I'm wondering if anyone here knows what it is. Thanks.

AVI's can go blank probably cause there are so many codecs & variations on the AVI file that photoshop I suspect doesn't support all. Most .mov or .mp4 files should work with Photoshop.

Since it is blank for quicktime files, have you actually got Quicktime installed on your pc? if you haven't then that could be causing the problem, also update to the most recent version if you have quicktime already. Also tick "Enable Coding Using Legacy Codec"s in quicktimes preferences under the advanced tab.

I had a problem where just quicktime files wouldn't open and realized it was cause I uninstalled quicktime recently.

Yeah, I do have Quicktime installed. So CS4 won't work with AVI due to the Codec involved? Is there a way to convert .avi to .mov or .mp4 files?

Most AVI's I've had on my PC won't import into Photoshop so I've just taken it as Photoshop must not like certain avi codecs so I tend to only import using mp4 or .mov files.

Anyway there are many converters which can do the job, Total Video Converter, AVS Video Converter, IMToo Video Converter although they do cost money.

If you want to convert to almost any file type for free you could use a program like Oxelon (http://www.oxelon.com/media_converter.html) or even do it online with http://mediaconverter.org/ . I've used Oxelon with successful results in Photoshop but the online coverter I haven't used in a long time.

yeah the avi wont work in this case because how its encoded, you can convert it to .mp4, .mov, or .avi again. I use AVS Video Converter 6 to convert my files.

So I guess the program they were referring to may be the one that can convert .avi files. Thanks for the links! I'll look into them when I get home tonight.

Thanks, I'll check out AVS Video Converter 6. I'll still need a tutorial on how to edit the video file into manageable GIFs, though.

well all you need is a video editor to edit what you want out of the gif. You can convert your file to .wmv and edit the video on Windows Movie Maker and convert the edited video to an .avi or .mov and import it to Photoshop.

So I need a video editor, a video converter, and the Windows Movie Maker to edit the GIF before I put the finishing touches on Photoshop? I guess it isn't as easy that I thought. :o

just a video converter and video editor (I used Windows Movie Maker as an example to cut your video)

Ah, I see. Thanks for the help, because I tried Googling but I couldn't find the answers I seek. Maybe it has to do with the phrasing of my question, but it is great when you can get a direct answer in this forum. :yay:
