DC Animation Creature Commandos - Animated Series

Which were both DCEU projects as was this originally.....Id say thats pretty left over. Luckily they could rewrite enough.
Yet had very little in common with the rest of the DCEU and were pretty much James Gunn doing his own thing and adapting some of his favorite DC characters.

Amanda Waller. Flag Sr.. Weasel.....those are pretty heavy commonalities.

Pretty rock solid so far. Love the cast (especially Frankenstein and the Bride).

Look forward to whatever joke they inevitably make about Flag Sr. dyeing his hair before his first live action appearance.

The Suicide Squad is one of my least favorite DC movies because I find some of the music to be so unbearable. And it just got easily dethroned.

That being said the Bride is super cool, and the GI Robot nazi shtick worked for me every time.

Okay can we talk about how vainglorious and dumb it is that the opening credits have a handsome fit cartoon James Gunn in it on his creator credit? I feel like almost anyone else would get massive amounts of justifiable flack for something so overtly narcissistic.

Apparently, Dean Lorey and some of the other creators came up with the idea and presented it to Gunn as a surprise gesture. He was sort of flattered and just went with it.

IGN: James, how did you wind up in the opening credits of Creature Commandos?

James Gunn:
You tell me. That was like a shock.

Dean Lorey: James had a credit and we were trying to figure out, “Well, we gave all the characters sort of little moments,” animated moments in the credits. And we were like, “James is kind of a character. We should give him something.” And so we all got very excited about it and we spent a lot of time working on it, and how does he... Does he lean back in the chair? What does he do?

James Gunn: Aren't I writing on a typewriter?

Dean Lorey: Yeah, you're writing on a typewriter.

James Gunn: That's not canon. [laughs] I was surprised and my ego was stroked and I was like, “Oh, my God. Please don't let people think that I told him to animate…”

Dean Lorey: You did not. I can tell you for the record, he didn't, and we were thrilled to present it. And nervously we presented a little bit.

I really hate how people online are getting this simple fact wrong without even doing a simple search. Even people who already don’t like him and his work are purposefully spreading this piece of misinformation just to get a rise out of others and confirm their own bias.

The guy may have some issues, but come on.

Oh come on.

It’s a middle aged white guy hunched over a laptop. It’s not as if they turned him into a Frank Frazetta drawing.

And like ArmsHeldOut pointed out, it’s not like he did it himself.

Reminded me of this, honestly…

I watched the first two episodes. It was ok. It's interesting that they decided on using a wonder woman villain so I'm curious to see where that leads.

I will say it seems very similar to the suicide squad so I'm even more interested to see how he's changed up his style for Superman.

These first two episodes were very easy to watch and fairly enjoyable. But I must say that I also had a feeling of... laziness ?

The introduction of the characters by having Waller listing them, the briefing on the plane, the immediate and fairly easy dirty jokes... Maybe things will be different later on - it's only the beginning - but for now, I kind of feel like I'm watching another iteration of both Suicide Squad movies under a new skin.
And before I get told that “the concepts are common” or that “it's just Gunn's style”, I don't think either of these considerations should lead to repeating the exact same story beats/scenes. There are always other ways of doing things, and it's just a bit of a turn-off to start a new series with an immediate sense of déjà-vu...

Speaking of Gunn's style, I really like this approach of seeking out obscure characters to bring them back to the spotlight and giving them new life. I don't even mind looking for the fun in them.
But more and more, I get the impression that instead of finding what might exist in these characters to exploit through his sensibility, he twists them to suit the jokes he wants to make (something perhaps summed up by Drax's evolution? I've only seen the first two GOTG ...).
In the end, the characters don't always feel genuinely valued for what they are, becoming instead interchangeable vehicles for humor, gore and trash (no problem with this tone, again, it's the method I'm a bit iffy on).

Still, Gunn definitely knows how to deliver well-paced adventures and action, making it very easy to get hooked into his series and films without asking too many questions...
But for me, the formula is now clearly running out of steam (well, I'm not his biggest aficionado but I never been a hater either, so, there you go).
That's where his Superman really intrigues me, as he's obviously had to renew his approach to tackle this character.

On the subject of visuals, I understand but don't entirely agree with those who say it looks like the Tomorrowverse.
The stylization is not so far and some shots share the same stiffness, but I found the character poses, the framing and action scenes to be better handled and slightly more dynamic. It's maybe not much, but it makes a difference to me. Otherwise, I also appreciated the work on certain atmospheres and color palettes (the Bride's origin).
Sure, it's not perfect, but it seems to me to be broadly in line with what's being done today. I've completely given up on getting animation for these characters like in the "good old days" (BTAS) or the "not-so-old days" (DC animation of the first half of the last decade) anyway.

------

So yeah, a fine start overall but I hope there's more to it.
In today's landscapes, I get the impression that Creatures Commando is a very straightforward and edgy show that's perhaps more suited to binge watching than awaited every week... but we'll see.

Not really feeling any of these characters. And I agree it feels like a re-hash of TSS. Was hoping for something with a more unique tone and style but it feels very much like the same ****. Weird start for the DCU, I wouldn’t have started with this. I hope Superman feels more unique. I don’t really feel like the animated projects are going to blend well with live action ones. Cheap animation and voice acting doesn’t seem up to par.

Tbh I’m very unimpressed with this and it feels like a slow start to the DCU.

Compared to other recent shows like Penguin and Caped Crusader, this is a huge ****ing step down IMO. Just my two cents… I’m glad other people love it but I was thoroughly unimpressed. Don’t like any of these characters at all or care where they’re going. The only interesting **** I’ve seen from this is the Clayface, Starfire and Superman appearances

It sounds like from the interviews he had more or less written this before he got the job of co-ceo so I get why it's a bit of a weird start for the DCU. More of a retrofit into the start of the DCU.

The stellar reviews seem a bit overblown but we also haven't seen the entire series so maybe it gets better. Truthfully, I couldn't care less about the characters so to me this is just something to see but not something I would revisit. I thought peacemaker was a really good tv series but I don't think I'd ever go back and watch it.

This show is not that good. I hate to admit it but it’s just how I feel. Very weak start to the DCU. I’ll finish the show so I’m not out of the loop and don’t miss any cool cameos, but that’s it. I hope the rest of the episodes change my mind, but it just feels so same-y and like Gunn is on autopilot.

Much enjoyed both episodes.
The first is certainly introductory, while the second starring The Bride is a clear step forward.
I can't see the similarity with "The Suicide Squad" as a flaw, being a direct sequel to all intents and purposes, if anything I see it as a merit.
Curious to see the continuation and understand if they'll maintain a structure similar to "Lost" to delve into each individual character as done in the second episode.

Finally got around to watching the first two episodes and so far I'm enjoying it! Characters are quirky and interesting, and I quite enjoy the animation.

I see some people complaining that the team gets together the same way the Suicide Squad does and how paint by numbers that is. Given the low episode count, I'd rather they save time on how the team gets together and instead spend it on the individual characters.

The only part where I questioned the creative choices:

When it transitions to Frankenstein stalking the Bride over the years and the needle drop kicks in. They sorta swerved from a dark/emotional moment into a comedy piece.

I think the show is fine, but it probably would've worked better if they released all the episodes at once. The first 2 episodes just feel like the first act of a movie.

I also wasn't a fan of some the musical choices. I know it's a James Gunn thing, however... sometimes it felt inappropriate to me when there's a serious/tense scene, but then there's a fun song playing in the background. I thought that kind of takes away the impact.

I still enjoyed it, but if you compare this to other animated shows like Arcane, Invincible, X-Men '97..., it's nowhere near that level. I would also say Harley Quinn is better than this. That got me hooked after one episode, while with Creature Commandos I'm still "wait and see."

Great episode. If you watch all three episodes together you will enjoy the show more. The plot thickens going into episode 4. I actually think a Seargant Rock movie with GI Robot would be fun if you take liberties with history.

I really, really, don't like myself for enjoying this show, but I must admit that I do.

It's nothing groundbreaking, it's just typical Gunn with his typical tropes, his grotesque sex and violence aesthetics dialed up to 11 on animation that looks like one of those Mortal Kombat spinoff movies.

That being said I love the Bride but I SMH at Gunn for having her fall in love with a necrophiliac that's supposed to be her father, but again this is typical of him.

However, this last episode with GI Robot and him killing all those Neo-Nazis at their meeting was hilarious. I did chuckle.

This is such a weird start to the DCU. Showing a bunch of first looks at heroes and they’re dead in a future sequence.

I’m hyped for Superman but this should’ve just stayed a script instead of actually being made.

I’m also really not feeling the fact that the DCU isn’t a full reboot. Too confusing

The thing there is that the GA didn't care about the DCEU in the first place and no matter what you do there will always be confusion reboot and also Gunn's stuff that remains canon is pretty niche. CC is obviously niche and Peacemaker, while a very successful show, is a far smaller audience than Superman will have. It probably isn't a coincidence that the CC characters in Superman are ones who aren't carry-overs.

TLDR: GA ain't gonna care and if you're a fan of this stuff it's not exactly complicated.
