So I am preparing to do an essay about some women in rock that are current(like 2000's and beyond I guess)....the ones that come to mind because I really enjoy their music are Karen O, Alison Mosshart, and Meg White...

Who are some of the women in rock that you think will go down in history? You can help me with my essay :o AND discuss some cool women for us to discover along the way

Maria Brink from "In This Moment"

Angela Gossow from "Arch Enemy"

Christina Scabbia from "Lacuna Coil"

Doro Pesch from "Warlock"

Cristina Bishop from "Scarlet Sins"

Alison Mosshart from the band The Kills.

Hayley Williams aka "The Great Orange Hope" -Paramore

Although as of late she hasn't been looking too orangey, though the band's latest album is absolutely phenomenal.

It cracks me up that Jack and Meg White are brought up in every conversation about rock. They're not that talented. Meg White probably won't be discussed ten years from now, unless she starts up a band with some crazy-talented instrumentalists.

Check out Emma Anzai instead. There's a rocker chick with actual talent.

I don't know, Emma Anzai won't be discussed ten years from now either. If she started her own band, maybe but not with Sick Puppies.

i feel bad but the only ones on this list i've heard of are Meg, Hayley and Karen O. I never really considered their type of music "rock" but music is subjective.

I'd definitely give Sheryl Crow a nod, not only as a performer but as a songwriter. She's been around for a while and she's been able to stay relevant and on the charts.

I hate to say it, but you could possibly mention Gwen Stefani (as in No Doubt, not her solo pop career).

Amy Lee of Evanescence? I can't really think of any dominant women in rock of late.

Now if you wanna include the late 80's early 90's I'd recommend Chrissie Hynde (sp?), Linda Perry, Pat Benatar, the lead singer of the Cranberries (can't think of her name!), Patty Smith, Debbie Harry...

I don't think she'll go down in history, but Haley Williams is pretty big right now.

Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth. I don't know if Sonic Youth totally counts as current since they started in the early 80s, but they're still around.

my teacher specifically told us not to do anything Paramore, because there are always at least 5 of those papers haha...that and I don't enjoy their music :p I'm thinking of adding in Gwen Stefani now.

I was definitely thinking of doing Kim Gordon, Debbie Harry and the like but we will be discussing them soon in class. That and the fact that she wants us to write about current artists because she wants to discover artists along the way as well :p It's History of Women in Rock Music btw

Emily Haines from Metric, maybe.

I don't doubt that for a second. Sick Puppies would blow entirely if it weren't for Emma. That said, Meg gets all the fame that Emma deserves much more.

I could've sworn that the Meg White tape was said to be fake...well it wasn't HER at least.

jack and meg are not talented? or just meg? if you try to lay on us that jack isnt talented, then you're crazy. as for meg, she's not the most traditionally proficient drummer. but she is the absolute perfect drummer for the white stripes, and she is what makes the band work. i've heard recordings of jack white playing white stripes tunes with other drummers, and it does not work at all. there really is a primal beauty in the simplicity of her drumming that is necessary for the band.

how are the white stripes and yeah yeah yeah's NOT rock music? the white stripes in particular define rock music. even if they're not your cup of tea, they tackle rock and roll in the most traditional manner....up tempo and energetic country and blues.

and no, the alleged meg white sex tape is not her.

No, they're not talented. Jack can make catchy riffs, I'll give him that, but they're simple, boring riffs for the most part. I've seen some amateur artists who can make Jack look like a child. Jack is easily the more talented of the two Whites, but they both, for lack of a better phrase, are half-assed hacks. Seriously, if the White Stripes third member as singer and front-man, you'd have probably never known Jack Whites name. Same reason no Linkin Park I've met fans can name me any of their band members (aside from the fact that they synthesize the **** out of their instruments). They're a bunch of amateur instrumentalists who are standing out around more amateur instrumentalists.

Like I said, hacks like the Whites are getting all this fame and talent over one mediocre song (I admit, I liked Another Way To Die too), when people like Emma Anzai aren't getting any recognition:

Even though Liz Phair is more into pop than rock nowadays, her debut album Exile in Guysville is one of the best rock/alternative album I've ever heard. And I heard that Alison Mosshart is the lead singer of Jack White's new band The Dead Weather.

I still think Seven Nation Army is The White Stripes' best song.

to make such claims i can only assume you are ignorant to rock and roll and theres not going to be any sensible debate with you about this. im totally cool if you dont dig the stripes, but to not be able to recognize obvious talent you must be deaf.

but if you cant take my word for it, maybe you'd appreciate pete townshend, jeff beck, jimmy page, the rolling stones, bob dylan, and countless other rock and roll gods all who have sang the praises of jack and the white stripes. not that anything they have to say makes it fact, but i'd say that carries a lot of weight that cannot be denied.

anyways, carry on....

I'm not ignorant to rock at all- I grew up on it, and I play it. My parents were rock and metal fans growing up, and they didn't shy away from allowing me to listen to it either. Jack White is a simple guitarist who makes very simple, boring guitar riffs. If you've got no argument other than, "Mick Jagger said so!", then it's you who's lacking any sensible debate. I am by no means an expert, but even with the little knowledge of guitar I have, it's hard to really like Jack White when I grew up on guys like Keith Richards, Jimi Hendrix, Kirk Hammet, Dave Mustaine, Eddie Van Halen, Tommi Iommi, Dimebag Darrel, Randy Rhoads, etc., to name a few. Jack White simply had the fortune of being average in a time when a lot of other artists of his era are criminally below average, and therefore stands out in his crowd.

well its clear that my opinion of the stripes means nothing to you (which is fine), hence why i relied on the opinion of genuine rock gods hoping that might actually carry some weight with you. in fact, im sure i could pull accolades from every reputable source and credible musician and you still wouldnt care. but, like i said, its cool you dont dig the stripes. but how you could deny the sheer obvious talent, is beyond me.
