X-Men: Phoenix - Warsong First Look
Marvel reveals pages from the new Greg Pak series.
by Hilary Goldstein

June 2, 2006 - Today at Wizard World Philly, Marvel announced a new series from Greg Pak and Tyler Kirkham. X-Men: Phoenix - Warsong is sequel to the the popular Phoenix Endsong miniseries and stars poor, poor Cyclops and Emma Frost.

Further details will follow (you know, when we magically appear in Philly). For now, check out some interior pages from the book.

Looks like a elseworld since she obviously kills three more X-Men in the next panel.

First of all, that art is disgusting. Second, WTF? Since when is Emma the Phoenix?

As I say I am betting it's an elseworld or thats a dream sequence because there is no way Both Cyclops, Colossus and three other X-Men die.

Did anyone read Phoenix: Endsong?
Emma is the Phoenix now.

There's no reason why Emma couldn't be the Phoenix. It could possess her like it did Jean. Badda bing badda bang, Emma 'The Fiery Queen' Frost

Man, Cyclops gets NO love.

Never read Endsong, and that's frigging stupid.

I doubt Cyclops is dead, or that he really dies at all in this. Cyclops is pretty safe as far as comic characters go between Whedon's use of him on Astonishing, the Emma/Scott relationship and him being headmaster of the school.

This reminds me of a movie I once saw.

It's X-MEN 3 all over again!

Next, Storm will be spinning, spinning, SPINNING at attackers like the Tazmanian Devil, only twice as emo.

True, Cyclops is needed for ASTONISHING, the best selling X-book. But ASTONISHING is a rare title, and may as well be a WHAT IF as far as continuity is concerned. If Marvel is perfectly willing to print THE END, even though its not really concerned with making Claremont's continuity in that title bare fruit (THE END claimed Gambit was the 3rd brother; Marvel's going with Vulcan), then why wouldn't it be willing to publish ASTONISHING even if Cyke is dead elsewhere? They could go, "continuity, bah! You're still buying it! Nyuck nyuck".

But, yes, its only a page of teaser art. For all we know, its a dream, or a psychic vision, or Emma reassembles him, or he hatches from a big spider and bites off Emma's face. What? The latter worked for Spider-Man....

Nah I doubt it, Cyclops is actually quiet popular today in the X-world, and he is actually selling books like Deadly Genesis, Astonishing, End of Greys, and appears in all X-titles, plus the writers seem to love writing Scoma every chance they get. Furthermore she kills Colossus on the next page as evident from Kitty's reaction...

Plus I read the interview on Newsrama and they don't even bother to ask if anyone dies, nor does Pak mention anyone dying, he says its basically a filler until Jean returns.

Right... Jean's dead, so they just threw the Phoenix at the current telepath Cyclops is boning? I will enjoy not reading this.

Oh my god, first the Phoenix entity, Maddy was once thought to be the Phoenix, then Jean, and now Emma....OMG Cyclops' man-seed is the Phoenix. :(

Then its interesting how he was so useless in X-MEN 3, wasn't it? Definately a bit of a waste.

As for F4: DEATH IN THE FAMILY, it was basically an enjoyable fill-in issue of FANTASTIC FOUR with some reprints; the problem was that it was solicted as if it offered something that would be earth-shatteringly important for the Four, and it was not. This begs the question of whether solicts are deliberately deceptive. If so, then that's a bad game to play for Marvel, because if they "cry wolf" so many times, then when they have something that IS actually important, suddenly no one takes them seriously (and it is "underordered" like DEADLY GENESIS supposedly was).

On the flip side, if not for the "deceptive" solict, I doubt no one would have bought a $3.99 fill in issue of F4 that contained a fun filler story, a reprint, and another Franklyn short. Granted, it begs the question, "did we really need another FANTASTIC FOUR comic on the stands this month"? Of course, if Marvel's hardly bothered with this question with X or Spider books historically, why should we expect a shift with something else?

It's incredibly ironic that a movie franchise would marginalize a character who is not only the most prominent member of the X-Team (along with Wolverine and Storm) but to do so in a movie that was an adaption of both the Phoenix Saga and Whedon's first arc...which featured Cyclops as a larger character than Wolverine.

Cyclops is the ****ing most superfluous character in comic books. Let Storm lead the team; at least her powers are useful.
**** Cyclops. ****ing prick. :down

"Ironic" is certainly one way of putting it. :o

Cyclops is one of the best leaders in the Marvel Universe. On par with Captain America.

Meh. A good leader does not interesting make.
