Freestyle declaring 'D-War' in August
Korean monster movie aiming for wide release
By DARCY PAQUETSEOUL -- "D-War," a long-gestating effects-heavy monster movie produced in South Korea and shot in L.A., will receive a Stateside bow in late August via Freestyle Releasing.
Starring Jason Behr and Amanda Brooks, the English-language pic tells the story of a giant serpent that emerges from a past era to smash its way through downtown Los Angeles.

Company is said to be aiming for a 1,500-screen release.

Pic is repped internationally by Korean major Showbox, which unveiled an earlier edit of the film at AFM 2006.

Showbox will release the film in South Korea on Aug. 2.

Budget for the feature, which was entirely financed in South Korea, has been pegged at $70 million. However, after subtracting start-up technology costs for local effects house Younggu Art, Showbox is listing the budget at $32 million before P&A costs.

Helmer Shim Hyung-rae has a long history of producing sci-fi-related pics in South Korea, most recently with "Yonggary" (1999).

However, latest pic -- South Korea's most expensive ever -- marks a huge leap in ambition.

This movie was made back in 2004...that must tell something about the quality.

CGI owns Sci-Fi channel CGI for their movies. At least imo. But the rest of the trailer...boring. And too long.

Yonggary (also known as "Reptilian" in the US) was pretty sucky, but funny to watch because of its total suckiness.

I'm guessing that this "D-War" film is being released now in the hopes of cashing in on the good reviews given to the more recent (and I'm sure much, much better) Korean monster movie The Host.

Man, Koreans are doing it big.
It makes me more happy that I am part-Korean.

Been waiting for this for a LONG time. People riding around dinosaurs and dragons fighting eachother and then fitting them with cannons and facing off against tanks? Screw anyone who isn't excited by that!

I honestly don't know how to feel about this. I'm happy to see Koreans throwing their hat into the monster-movie arena, especially after The Host. I'm wondering why all the American involvement.

wow, really?

i thought someone would've liked that trailer. i hadn't seen it discussed anywhere.

Old movie, finally seeing the light of day. Made back in 2004 or 2005 and just found a distributer here in America (The tiny Freestyle Releasing...who will also release two Uwe Boll movies into theaters--Postal and In the name of the king)

I definitely agree.

For this I don't care how the acting, story, etc. is really.

I just want to see fckin' dragons! :)

That poster above is also the poster I saw in theaters and made me do a double take, "what the hell- why haven't I heard of this movie yet?!"

I'm pretty sure the PS3 game 'Lair' comes out around the same time as this film.

Also, by any chance does anyone know how wide of a US release this film is going to have?

I saw the yahoo trailer and it looks cool but i think i liked the Reign Of Fire Look on there Dragons.
