Marvelous’ stylish mecha game Daemon X Machina features character designs by Fire Emblem artist Yusuke Kozaki and mech designs by Macross’ Shoji Kawamori, and we got a look at plenty of both during the Nintendo Treehouse @ E3 2018 today with producer Kenichiro Tsukuda, a veteran in the mecha games business.

The footage starts out with a brief look at the character creator that offers various customization options for your character’s face, hair, eyes, eyebrows, makeup, scar/tattoo. The customization options from the E3 build isn’t final as it is still in development and we can expect to see more in the finished product.

The next part showed off the base where you’ll gather. Here you can see the mech that you pilot and use to fight in the game. Shoji Kawamori who is mostly known for his work on Macross, also worked on concept designs for the Armored Core series.

The space in the above screencaps will be decorated by the weapons you collect, so the more you collect the more decorations you’ll have.

We got to see some empty platforms where the mech was parked, and these will be platforms for your friends who join you on multiplayer.

This shiny console is where you’ll go to accept missions, but it’s also an A.I. that’ll be there to help you out.

Before heading out to battle you can customize your mech with equipment, loadouts, and more.

When you head out for the first time, there’s a tutorial that acts as a “test” to see if you can properly fly with the mech.

We get to see a few tanks as enemies to start off, including some hiding under a building. Daemon X Machina has a focus on destructible environments, so you can destroy the building and have the debris fall on the enemies to take them out. Additionally, enemies blow up too so you can hit one and pop another enemy right next to it.

All enemies you fight in the world of Daemon X Machina are A.I. based. They originally started out as regular artificial intelligence but began attacking humans and became known as Arms of Immortal. They live by hacking other machines like them. When defeating enemies they’ll drop weapons and parts that you can pick up in real-time. For example, if your body parts break you can pick up enemy parts and replace them. You’ll find some drawings or graffiti on walls, which you can pick up to acquire new colors to customize your mech.

There are many things you can pick up and find around the stage, and upon clearing a mission you’ll be given some time to go around collecting stuff you may have missed. Once you finish, you’ll get to see everything acquired.

There are five slots to equip weapons, including one special slot for something else, but this will be shared on a later date.

A lot of focus was put into the art style of the game, and there are all sorts of things that were incorporated from anime and comic, things that users have experienced but maybe not in the mecha genre. The next stage is dark red, and it is made to convey the state of the world, and there are some that don’t have any colors at all.

Tsukuda-san, who has worked on various mecha titles throughout his career, was asked to share his goals or something that excites him about Daemon X Machina. He responded by saying the idea of getting something he sees in real-time and stealing parts from enemies and taking them on the fly is exciting.

Another big part of gameplay is not only being able to change your equipment on the fly, but also being able to choose whether you want to be on the ground or in the air. There are some things you can find while flying and not while on the ground, so there are many reasons to explore the areas in both ways.

The staff is working hard on the art style, and this includes little details like how you see trees shake as you approach them. The staff was also enthusiastic about coordinating colors to elicit feelings from the players.

The title Daemon X Machina was also something that had a lot of thought poured into. It comes from the Latin term of “deus ex machina” meaning “god from the machine.” In the game the enemy A.I. are seen as demons, but they’ll also see players as demons or gods.

The footage concludes with a boss fight. One interesting point is that players will get to shoot down every single missile from the boss. Players will get to choose at what range they fight the boss, so if they prefer shooting from a distance or up and close, either way works out.

It was also noted that the E3 2018 build only has Japanese voices, but the full game will come with English dubs.

You can catch the entire gameplay session from the Treehouse live stream below:

Daemon X Machina: Nintendo UK interview with producer Kenichiro Tsukuda

Producer teases Gamescom 2018 appearance.

Daemon-X-Machina_2018_06-12-18.jpg

Nintendo UK published an interview with Daemon X Machina producer Kenichiro Tsukuda, who discusses more about the E3 2018-announced game and teased an appearance for Gamescom 2018.

Read the full interview below.

Could you tell us a bit more about what sort of game Daemon X Machina is?
Daemon X Machina is a fast-paced action game – you play as a pilot known as an Outer, and fight in battles using the Arsenal mechs you equip. As an Outer, you’ll fight against enemies in lots of different missions, while customizing the weapons of your Arsenal.

Because they’re mechs, you have complete control of them on land and in the air. You can also obtain equipment from enemies in real-time, and then decide accordingly what sort of tactics would be best, and change your equipment on-the-fly.

Mr. Tsukuda, you have quite the pedigree in the mech action genre, having worked on titles such as the Armored Core series. How are you looking to make this the best mech action game out there?
One way we hope to achieve that is by making it appropriate for the age we’re now living in. The environments in which people are playing are always progressing and changing – we see advances in hardware, and now with Nintendo Switch, people can play both at home and on-the-go, and also online.

By adding features that players will be able to enjoy, not just within the game, but rather tailored for each of these individual environments, we hope to create a game that lots of people will be able to enjoy.

In terms of gameplay, we’ve made it so that you can fight with the style you want – you can get new equipment and change it in real-time on the battlefield, so you can alter your tactics at any time. We’re also working to make it so that you can train up and customise your mech, and strengthen it beyond mere equipment. This means that anybody should be able to play in the way they want, without having to rely entirely on their skills.

What sort of story are you looking to tell in the game?
The story is set after the moon has fallen and the world has changed. Your immediate enemy is AI (Artificial Intelligence). When the moon fell, mankind built walls called Ovals in order to limit the disaster. In order to rebuild, they made machinery and networks controlled by AI.

However, due to the power of energy particles called Femto that spread when the moon fell, the AI was mutated, and became an enemy of mankind called Arms of Immortal.

Meanwhile, powerful individuals emerged, wanting to monopolize the power of this new Femto energy, and so planned to drive the evil AI out from the Ovals. Some humans, known as Outers, obtained special powers from the Femto.

They’re hired as mercenaries by those powerful individuals and fight against the AI in Arsenals. The player character is one of these mercenaries, and will uncover the mysteries of the world.

Speaking of which, the Arsenals in Daemon X Machina seem to be fairly versatile machines. Could you tell us a bit more about what they can do?

The mechs in the game move by tracing the movements of the Outer piloting them. This means that the strength of a mech also depends on the physical abilities of the Outer. That’s a part of the game’s setting, but I also feel it’s important to consider gameplay equally as well.

So, we made it so players can equip lots of different weapons and fight in the way that they want. By giving them so much control of movement on land and in the air, players have a lot of freedom in battles. The mechs also have lots of other abilities, but I’ll save that for another time…

Fans of Fire Emblem: Awakening and Fire Emblem Fates might recognise Yusuke Kozaki’s name. He’s working on the character designs for this game, so we can probably expect to meet some interesting folk along the way, right?

There are all kinds of characters in the game. There’s someone who watches in the wings, and will come to help if your character gets into a sticky situation. We have two brothers who search battlefields for weapons and parts to sell, and another character with a dark past.

The characters you meet will sometimes be your allies, and sometimes your enemies. Mr. Kozaki is currently working on the character designs, so I hope to be able to show them to you and talk a bit more in the future.

In the trailer from Nintendo Direct: E3 2018, we saw some seriously cool looking mech concepts which Mr. Kawamori worked on. How is he approaching his designs this time around?
They’ve been designed with the concept that the player character – the Outer – would equip, or rather wear, the mechs. So while it’s still armour, by designing both more muscular looking parts and more armored parts, Mr. Kawamori could achieve a kind of “mech as a character” design that only he could pull off.

Speaking of visual design – the game has quite a unique visual identity when compared to other games in the genre. Could you talk about what led you to pursue this art style?

With so many different games out there, you kind of develop a fixed concept of what a game in a particular genre should look like. However, games are also creative works, so I feel we have the freedom to have an individual style.

So although this is a mech action game, instead of going for photorealism, I wanted to try our hand at a more comic- or anime-like visual style. The staff agreed with me, and so that’s the approach we’re pursuing.

Mr. Tsukuda, we hear you’ll be making an appearance at Gamescom this year…

During Nintendo Treehouse: Live at E3 2018, I showed how Outers can get out of their Arsenal. At Gamescom 2018 I’m hoping to show what more you can do with that feature. Also, I think it will be an opportunity to show some new aspects to the gameplay that we haven’t explained yet. I hope you’re looking forward to it!

We certainly are! Thank you very much for your time today, Mr. Tsukuda.

Daemon X Machina Producer Kenichiro Tsukuda Introduces The Story, Talks Mecha Genre. August 8, 2018 . 3:00pm

Nintendo of America revealed a new interview with producer Kenichiro Tsukuda from Marvelous, who talked about the story of Daemon X Machina, and more.

Nintendo of America revealed a new interview with Daemon X Machina producer Kenichiro Tsukuda from E3, where he talks about the story of the game, and what sets the mecha game genre apart.

Here are the highlights:

  • In the world of Daemon X Machina, moon fragments fell down to the surface of the planet after the moon was destroyed, and using the energy from the moon, the Avatars control mechs called Arsenals. The area surrounding where the energy is contained is walled off, and enemies are constantly trying to break in. The enemies, called the Arms of Immortals, were created when the energy made the humans’ AI go berserk, becoming an enemy that cannot be killed.

  • Daemon X Machina is being created by 1st Studio in Marvelous, which has been around a long time, but only took up the name last year.

  • Tsukuda thinks that more people have an appreciation of mecha nowadays. From the time people are kids, they have dreams like wearing a mecha suit, and the mecha genre is part of that appeal.

Daemon X Machina Gamescom 2018 gameplay
Published 6 hours ago. 14 comments.

Plus various tidbits of new information.

Daemon-X-Machina_08-23-18.jpg
Marvelous debuted new gameplay footage of Daemon X Machina during Nintendo’s Gamescom 2018 live stream.

Here is an overview of all the new information discussed during the gameplay demo, via ResetEra user LordKano:

    • You can create an avatar named Outer.
    • Mechs are called Arsenal.
    • You can grab weapons from defeated enemies to add to your Arsenal, adapting fighting style while in-mission.
    • In the story, the moon has crashed down and mankind is in a difficult situation. Due to that, a new kind of energy called Femto energy was created and is having various effects on the world. Artificial Intelligence that was previously used by mankind has been affected by that energy and they are now rebelling against humanity.
    • The player will get inside an Arsenal and fight against that AI in behalf of humanity.
    • The LAB in the hangar is used to personalize and upgrade (movement speed, jumping ability, new skills, etc.) your Outer. Those enhancements carries over to the Arsenal.
    • Outers are not just normal human beings, they have been affected by Femto energy and are on the level of a super human, and have been driven off from normal society.
    • You pick up missions at the hangar.
    • The mission they play during the Gamescom 2018 demo has them playing on-foot at first, because they need to infiltrate an enemy base to steal an Arsenal.
    • You can fight without your mech, using swords and the link.
    • Enemy mechs are faster, stronger, and smarter than the normal tanks you fight.
    • All cutscenes will be dubbed in the final release.
    • When you play game in multiplayer, hangar will serve as a hub for all the players. Up to four players, each with their mech, can play together in both online and local multiplayer. You can compensate for missing players with CPU (one friend and two CPUs, for example). One player can attract the boss while the others shoot him down.
    • In the Gamescom 2018 demo mission, the boss left a huge laser beam. You can shoot him with that, but you can also keep it, finish the mission then take it back to the hangar so the R&D team will work to create a miniaturized version for your Arsenal.
    • There’s a countdown after you’ve beaten the boss, and it is tied to a “pretty unique multiplayer feature that no game has ever done before, but we’re not going to talk about it until a later date”.
    • The last mission shown this time is an extermination mission taking place in an in-door environment, limiting player movements. A very pivotal character for the story appears at the end of that mission.
    • You can change your weapon loadout in real-time, but you need to have that equipped beforehand.
    • Femto energy is a resource that you have to manage. Some weapons (like the sword used in the demo) uses that energy. Femto energy can be thought like a MP bar in RPGs.
Daemon X Machina is due out for Switch in 2019.

New Interview With DAEMON X MACHINA Producer Sheds Light On The Story And Level Design
Producer for Daemon X Machina reveals new details about the game's story, designing levels for the mechs to fight in, and immersing the player in the game.Read more

Daemon X Machina
is a game developed by Marvelous! that was revealed during this year's E3. The game will be coming out exclusively for the Nintendo Switch in 2019, and will bring some intense mech fights to Nintendo's handheld hybrid console.

In a recent interview with Nintendo Life, Daemon X Machina producer Kenichiro Tsukuda has revealed a few details about the game's story, designing interesting levels for the giant mechs to fight in, and how the've strived to immerse the player in the game for a proper mech experience.

When asked about the reason behind these mechs fighting each other, Tsukuda reveals that there is a big catastrophe that put humanity at risk, and the result was humans discovering a mysterious new energy that has turned artificial intelligence against humanity.

"The backdrop of the story is that the moon has fallen from the sky. That's the big catastrophe that has put humanity in danger. But due to that catastrophe, from the moon, this new Femto energy has been discovered. Due to the influence of this Femto energy, the machines and the artificial intelligence that human beings were using have somehow, for reasons unknown, developed their own kind of consciousness, and turned against humanity. So there's a 'man versus machine' thing going on. Humans and the AI, as they are called in the game, are kind of fighting over this Femto energy".

Tsukuda also explains that within this setup, there are some humans who have also been affected by this Femto energy, and are actually the ones who have stood their ground and decided to fight the AI; even when they themselves have been cast out of their own society.

"Within that backdrop, there are people called 'Outers'. The reason they are called Outers is because they are not regular human beings. They have kind of absorbed some of this Femto energy, and become slightly superhuman. Due to their difference, they have been cast out of society. But at the same time, they are the ones that are fighting back against the AI. That's the conflict that the player will find themselves in. So in a way, the enemy in the game and those on your own side are all outcasts. The AI and the Outers are both outcast from human society. The drama of the story comes from that".

When it comes to the level design itself in Daemon X Machina, Tsukuda reveals that one of the main things the development team has focused on are the weapons; especially since the weapons, and their respective range, dictate where everything will be placed within the level.

"In terms of the actual level design, everyone working on it, from the art design team to the guys actually creating the maps, actually playtests it going through the design process. They put in their own ideas about what is working and what isn't working. One element we actually start with is the range of the weapons. All the other distances in the level design need be based on that; weapon range is the foundation of what is possible with a level. So you have the range of the weapons, and you kind of place objects and obstacles and terrain based on those ranges. Then you place enemies and see how those elements interact with each other. That's the process to make sure the level design gives the player interesting and varied gameplay".

Kenichiro Tsukuda has been producing the Armored Core series for quite a while now, and if there is one thing that he's learnt from the experience is that mech games should always have players feeling immersed in that world. Tsukuda laso thinks that, looking back, the art style being photorealistic was probably not the way to go; a thing that he's definitely incluenced the art style in Daemon X Machina.

"One thing I've learned is that with the mech genre, the player really needs to be able to put him or herself in there; they really need to feel immersed in the game and in the mech. They need to feel like they themselves are in that world, and experiencing it directly. I think I've learned that that is an element that you need for people to really fall in love with the game. That's something we've worked hard on with Daemon X Machina.

I also think back to my past games and think 'why did I aim for that photorealistic visual?', without really thinking about it, or without really considering other options. I look back and wonder why I did it that way. That has influenced the art style of Daemon X Machina a lot
".

Marvelous Entertainment revealed, just a few weeks ago, that Daemon X Machina — their brand-new mecha action title released for the Nintendo Switch — would be getting an update that would be adding a Versus mode to the game.

Today, Daemon X Machina finally got the update version 1.1.1, which has added both "1-on-1" and "2-on-2" battle modes that allow players to engage in mech duels with their friends either locally via a wireless connection or online.

During Co-op mode, players can even challenge other players by attacking them in the game; with the dual beginning when the attacked player attacks them back.

According to the information shared on Nintendo's website, players can partake in Ranked matches — where players compete with set rules and they climb ranks in the global leaderboards — and Custom matches with their own set of rules.

When the moon tore apart, the sky bled red with light, ushering in an apocalyptic new age…and to survive, you must fight. As a mercenary, defend Earth through high-speed combat against corrupted robots in a series of missions from the cockpit of your Arsenal, a fully customizable mech. Equip your Arsenal with a vast array of parts and weapons, obtain more from downed enemy Arsenals, and swap them on the fly to suit your strategy in the face of ever-rising threats.

Daemon X Machina is currently available exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
