Ryan Gosling Orbiting Damien Chazelle’s Neil Armstrong Movie At Universal?
by Mike Fleming Jr

EXCLUSIVE: Universal’s Neil Armstrong biopic First Man is still being written and still being developed, but I’m hearing that Ryan Gosling is being courted to play the famed astronaut for Whiplash helmer Damien Chazelle, who is directing a script by Spotlight scribe Josh Singer.

There is a natural symmetry here, as Chazelle and Gosling are currently together making La La Land, the musical film set in contemporary Los Angeles and starring Gosling as a jazz pianist and Emma Stone as the aspiring actress he falls in love with. That Lionsgate/Summit pic has already set a July 15, 2016 release date.

First Man is based on James Hansen’s biography First Man: A Life Of Neil A. Armstrong and the astronaut’s historical 1969 mission on Apollo 11 is approaching its 50-year anniversary. Chazelle boarded the pic in the spring after it had originated at Warner Bros with Clint Eastwood planning to direct in produce. Temple Hill partners Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen are producing now.

Gosling is up next in Adam McKay’s The Big Short, the adaptation of the Michael Lewis book from Paramount Pictures, New Regency and Plan B Entertainment. Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Brad Pitt, Marisa Tomei and Melissa Leo star in the story about the genius contrarian investors who, recognizing just how insane the housing bubble had become, figured out how to “short” the market prior to the financial collapse of 2008. It world premiered this month at AFI Fest and opens December 11.

Hmm interesting project.

This isn't happening for a while then, seeing as Gosling said he shoots Blade Runner next and that's scheduled for next summer.

Swag. Can J.K. voice mission control then?

Didn't we just have one with Ben Foster?

Holy cow. I need to learn how to read.

Kind of an underwhelming next project for Chazelle IMO. We'll see.

Anyone else just glance at the title of this thread and think it was a Louis Armstrong biopic?:woot:

I'm interested to see what Chazelle does what the material since it's a departure from his last two films, plus it's a story worth being told.

Gotta have some jazz on the soundtrack here.

You mean his only two? The guy hasn't done enough movies to consider it a departure from anything. :awesome:

Well in terms of subject matter, his first two films both dealt with jazz and focused on artists trying to achieve their dreams and the strains that can put on a relationship. Point being it was definitely easy to tell that the same guy made both movies. We'll see how much different this one is.

Excited to see where his career goes though.

He's done three films and they are all deeply involved with music. His first feature film GUY AND MADELINE ON A PARK BENCH is basically a warm up for La La Land with sprinkles of Whiplash.

Universal sets Ryan Gosling's Neil Armstrong biopic for fall 2018 debut http://thr.cm/55Evvj

niversal is shooting for the moon. The studio announced that its Neil Armstrong biopic — which reteams La La Land director Damien Chazelle with Ryan Gosling — will land in theaters on Oct. 12, 2018.

The announcement also revealed its title: First Man.

Written by Josh Singer, the film is described as a visceral, first-person account of NASA’s mission to land a man on the moon, focusing on Armstrong and the years 1961-1969. It is based on the book by James R. Hansen.

FIRST MAN trailer looked FANTASTIC. Starts with Gosling singing. Dramatic voiceover. Then ramps up into thriller territory. Major Oscar player. Felt a little Malick-y at times. Suggests that Chazelle's next step will be a mega-tentpole.

Just saw trailer for #FIRSTMAN and it looks amazing. A thrilling trailer that taps into the emotion and stakes of the first mission to the moon. Chazelle is such an exciting filmmaker and this looks like it could join the ranks of The Right Stuff or Apollo 13 #CinemaCon

But how will Ryan Bowling compare to Kirk Lazarus?

First trailer for #FirstMan is terrific, teasing “the most dangerous mission in history” - looks gorgeously shot, emotional and intense. Can’t wait

#FirstMan—starring Ryan Gosling and Claire Foy—is an awards season contender in the making with the trailer alone. #CinemaCon

The trailer was patriotic, nostalgic, and has For Your Consideration written all over it.
