Animation Dan Harmon's Rick and Morty

Holy ****. At that rate, this show will probably be going until 2040 given how they like to take long breaks between seasons. :o

I have to finish season 3 still. Last episode I watched was the one where he was escaping the death traps with the superhero team. I gotta say based on the episodes I watched of season 3, I wasn't as into it. I kind of felt like the show was trying too hard to be shocking and cruel, and the show itself I wasn't finding as smart or funny as seasons 1-2. The Pickle Rick episode I flat out hated. But that said, I will finish this season at some point. Is season 3 on Hulu at moment?

Angry nerds yelling and chanting isn't a riot.

I mean, I don't condone that either, but it's always bothered me how sensationalistic media called those "riots". Meanwhile, an actual massive riot happened in Philly earlier this month and no one batted an eye. Then again, I think sports riots get way less negative press compared to political protests or whining about sauce.

Police had to be called to the scene.

This is what I hate the most about the toxic Rick and Morty fandom.

When I saw this thread had been bumped I was afraid the news was going to be that CN had not been able to reach a deal with Roiland and Harmon and the show was done. I'm so pleased to be wrong.

Adult Swim knows where its bread is buttered.

So that translates to what, basically 6-7 seasons? That's like talk show renewal deals. I can't recall another animated show getting that kind of pickup.

Plus syndication rights and all that.

But you're right. I don't recall any modern animated show getting an order this huge. Like maybe a 52-episode order tops for two 26-episode seasons, but nothing like this.

same

I can see this ending up like The Boondocks where the creator(s) jump ship before the deal is over. Then someone else throws it all together to finish what's left.

Nah. Adult Swim execs could become semi-billionaires from the Rick and Morty show.

The Boondocks was the kind of show they could screw around with for s**ts and giggles.

I think the Simpsons got close with a 3 season deal several years back that added up to 72 but I would not count that as I don't think the Simpsons is ever going to die.

I think The Simpsons is a special case because it was already a huge established franchise, and it's also a primetime network TV show. Rick and Morty is not. Arguably, it's demographic is considerably smaller and narrower than Simpsons.

Rick and Morty is for all intents and purposes adult, late night animation.

It is but even outside that realm there aren't many series on television, period, which gets a dedicated order for 70 episodes.

There are none. This is Us made headlines for getting a season 2/3 renewal before their first season had even finished.

70 episodes is unheard of.

Oh I agree 100% Teelie. I was just listing those things to show how even crazier this is. Like Rick and Morty has been around less time and has a much smaller audience/key demo than Simpsons.

Even Family Guy when it was revived, and I mean, it's been back on the air for 13 years now, and while that was unprecedented, it didn't get like a 70 episode order like this.

This is staggering. I don't really have words for it.

How can they come up with 5 more seasons of material?

They covered so much ground already, lol.

All the more reason they'll find someone else to run it if/when Harmon leaves.

Man...talk about great news to wake up to! This show is one of my only “must watch” shows left. The local bar here is having a R and M trivia night. I wanna go check it out, but man...there is some REALLY obscure **** to pull from with this show. Now, a week later they’re having Batman trivia, and those poor bastards aren’t gonna know what hit them. I’ve been telling folks they might as well just stay home that night. :lmao:

I was thinking about that too but my next thought was how long the Simpsons has squeezed out their episodes for 30 years. They aren't all great episodes and their best might be behind them but then Rick and Morty isn't aiming for 600+ episodes. The more appropriate comparison I guess is South Park which is still managing to churn them out after 20 years and nearly 300.

3 seasons done

70 more eps = lets say 6 more

so then...

That's for Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon to figure out :) .

They could always do continuity and time travel resets :D .

In South Park's case though, they didn't really start making it more serialized and less episodic until the later seasons. Most of the early seasons in late 90s/early 00s were standalone goofy parody episodes.
