Sci-Fi Dan Trachtenberg to direct Predator film ‘Badlands’

Yeah Fox/Disney would be crazy not to greenlight and start working on a AVP film right now and at least have it come out within the next 2 or 3 years.

Both franchises have never had this much goodwill and momentum going for them and it would be insane of them to not take advantage of it.

I honestly think a well received AVP film with strong reviews and great marketing/hype behind it can easily open to $80-$100M right now especially if it's good and they get Arnold and Sigourney Weaver back.

He'll bring Michael Biehn back too as Hicks and just ignore what happened to his character in Alien 3 and Killer of Killers.

It's not like anyone would complain right?

Alien and Aliens had plenty of goodwill and momentum. :funny:

Yeah, I think given the upward trajectory both franchises are on, now is the time for AvP.
It should be up to Dan. Dan revived this series from the grave while making the the best Alien thing since Isolation. So if he wants to, let him. Don't trust anyone on the Alien side. Bad movie, mediocre show.

I thought Romulus was okay. They lost me with the 3rd act finale and the over reliance on callbacks. Alien Earth I thought was pretty good overall. Another one that fizzles out a bit at the end, but didn't actively anger me like the redux of Alien Resurrection did lol. But personal feelings aside, both those got pretty good buzz. Much better buzz than the Prometheus films got

Is your argument that they should make it for creative reasons or financial ones? Because the buzz for Earth dropped off pretty massively as did viewership I believe. Romulus made money. But it is the most overt rehash. And that's saying something in a series known for doing it. So pretty creatively bankrupted, but it did cast well and looked pretty.

But it did pretty well financially. Which really is what matters more if you're going to be trying this crossover again. Which, like I said prior, I don't think you're putting in Weyland-Yutani in this movie if the plan isn't an AvP movie. You're doing that knowing where the mind of your audience is going. So I see the discussion as sort of moot cause I just think that's inevitably the plan

I don't disagree if the argument is simply about the money. It isn't for me. I care about the quality of it. That's why I asked is this about the creative or the money for you?

I like what I’ve seen of Alien: Earth (haven’t finished it) but in no way do I think Hawley has the sensibilities for something like AvP in the slightest. And don’t even talk to me about Alvarez. No, it’s Trachtenberg or bust on this one imo.
And I think he wants to do it. His producer seems to hint as much. I just want it to be his decision. Whatever he wants to do. Whether it's a sequel, a crossover or something completely new. His instincts and desires have not gone wrong so far.

No, and I don't think the usual Alien tone is right for AvP. That's an inherently more schlock concept and I think leans far more into what Trachtenberg is doing.

In this case I don't feel I have to choose lol. Cause I think we can have both with Trachtenberg at the helm here

Wanted to see it at the fancy theatre tonight, but not sure if I want to risk the weather. Do not trust other people on the first snow of the season at night.

Really loved Badlands; glad a lot of others here did too. And 40mil opening weekend isn’t half bad

I’d love to see AVP next; these franchises feel akin to the Legendary Godzilla & Kong films (but better) so Disney should follow that track. But once crossovers start, unlike Godzilla/Kong, the Alien & Predator franchises should still that continue with solo projects.

For Trachtenberg’s AVP— the focus should be on Dek, Naru, Rain, Andy, & Thia with supporting/cameo roles for Schwarzenegger and Weaver if you can explain her inclusion somehow. Would love to see how Trachtenberg could make that all work.

Icing on the cake could be Danny Glover, Adrien Brody, & Alice Braga. But maybe with all this Predator goodwill, I can finally get a sequel to Predators. Brody just won an Oscar!

As the first Predator film I have seen in theatres, this was pretty awesome! Loved the dynamic between Dek, Thia and Bud, as well as Dek and his brother.

Action sequences, cinematography, the score, the performances of Elle Fanning, and Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi were all top notch.

Ending left me wanting more from Dek and Thia. Hope this does well so we can see them in another project.

9/10

This was very very good. I like Prey a BIT better because I just absolutely loved Midthunder’s character and really rooted for her but Badlands is absolutely a rock solid entry in this franchise. This, Prey and the original Predator are the best imo.

Predator 2 is a guilty pleasure of mine though. Lol

I’m with you guys, I want Arnold back for an epic AvP re-do directed by Trachtenberg. That’d be a great full circle swan song for Arnie to punctuate his career on.

This is the third I've seen in theaters... not counting the AVP movies either. It was probably the best of the bunch. I think Prey would have given it a run for its money had it been theatrical but definitely the best since the original.
I was too young to see Predator 1 or 2 in theaters, and I don't think I saw Alien Resurrection in the theater. I had all the OG movies on VHS and like all the toys, lol! Including the mail away invisible Predator!

But I have seen all of them in theater from AvP onward and I went to the re release of Alien last year

I've seen every Alien and Predator movie in theaters from 2010 onward starting with Predators with the exception of the straight to Hulu ones and The Predator. Dodged a bullet with the latter one. :o

I feel like AvP is still a little way off yet, seems like Trachtenberg still has plans in the Pred universe with the way this ended and adding in the likes of Naru, Dutch etc from the Pred world alone on top of that is already a lot to juggle, adding Xeno's on top of that all in one go seems too much too soon.

We shall see I guess but its fun that its at least a possibility again and will come at some point. Whatever Trachtenberg cooks up next I think a LOT will turn up for it.

My Dolby theater is packed again today. I think we might be seeing some decent legs out of this one.
