Damn :csad:

A statement issued through the 60-year-old star's agent said he "will no longer be working as an actor".
It said it was a "private decision" and he was "immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences".
Day-Lewis, who holds both British and Irish citizenship, won three best actor Academy Awards for roles in My Left Foot, There Will Be Blood and Lincoln.
His representative, Leslee Dart, said in a statement: "Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor.
"He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years.
"This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject."

Three-time Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis, widely considered one of the preeminent actors of his generation, is retiring from acting, Variety has learned.

The 60-year-old star, who has played presidents, writers, and gang leaders in a career that has spanned four decades, has one final film awaiting release, an untitled drama set in the world of high fashion. It is scheduled to hit theaters on December 25, 2017 and reunites him with Paul Thomas Anderson, who directed Day-Lewis to a best actor Oscar in 2007’s “There Will Be Blood.” Day-Lewis intends to help promote the movie, according to a person familiar with his plans.

He did not give a reason for his retirement. In a statement, Day-Lewis’ spokeswoman, Leslee Dart, confirmed the news: “Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor. He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years. This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject. ”

Well, assuming/hoping this is not due to some undisclosed health reasons - I say good for him retiring while he's still young enough to enjoy it. Seems like very few major actors tend to do that, and I know I'd love to do so if I were in their shoes.

But as a movie fan...damn. :(

Man that sucks. He's a genius and now a retired one.
The only male actor to have 3 oscars as a leading man. Looking forward to see his final movie "Phantom Thread".

If memory serves, he's retired previously. Moved to Italy and became a shoemaker or something. It lasted all of five years before being coaxed back by Scorcese for Gangs of New York.

So never say never.

I wonder if it had anything to do with his long time manager Gene Parseghian, who passed away in March.

I love his work but it's better to retire than lower himself like Anthony Hopkins, Robert Deniro, and Al Pacino.

He made so few movies in recent years he already felt retired.

The man is one of the best actors in history.
As far as I am concerned, he can do whatever he wants.

I really hope it's not health-related. Honestly, I think given how much preparation he does and how he dedicatedly immerses himself into each character he plays, it’s possible he’s just mentally exhausted. And perhaps finds that acting isn’t fulfilling anymore.

A huge loss to the movie industry, but some day we will get another Daniel Day Lewis I'm sure.

This is a huge blow for me.

At least we still have Gary Oldman.

Looks like Day Lewis may be taking up a new career as a fashion designer.

The new career choice doesn't surprise me. His son is a fashion model. Daniel Day Lewis worked as a shoe maker in Florence for a few years and he is playing a brilliant couturier in Paul Thomas Anderson's upcoming 1050's fashion film Phantom Thread.
