Daredevil reboot: official discussion thread - Part 2

I think people will claw at me when I say this but, I truly truly believe that if done right a Daredevil movie could be just as great as Nolan's Batman trilogy. Daredevil has such rich material to draw from (like Batman) and is such a dark, tormented, multi-dimensional character (like Batman), and I feel like you could tell a fascinating story on-screen with the right director and writer.

Characterwise, absolutely. Possibly even better, because there's a more consistent and direct commentary and exploration on the justice/legal system and the nature of crime possible.

I have trouble seeing a Daredevil franchise being as "big", though. Unless he has a Daredevilmobile and whatnot.

yeah. i don't think DD could ever be as big as bats, not without major re-writing.

maybe we'll also get a "real" typhoid mary this time too

Adjusted for inflation Daredevil made $9 million less than First Class did in theaters. It just tanked on the international markets while FC did decent business.
So there is potential there to actually turn a profit.

If I was Fox I would try to get something from Disney, maybe some script they've had in development that isn't Marvel owned. Give us that and we won't rush a Daredevil film. Like how Disney obtained Oswald the Lucky Rabbit from Universal by releasing Al Michaels from his ESPN contract. Something minor but at least they would have something they could develop.

So they'll threaten to rush a movie out and make crap? That would be beyond unscrupulous.

Avi Arad claims that Sony loaned kingpin to Fox for Daredevil.

So people would rather lose a big screen Daredevil for a watered down TV version? No thanks.I'd rather watch the director's cut of Daredevil than a ABC version of
Daredevil.

Was Blade watered down when he went to the small screen? A tv show can actually flesh the character out better than a 2 hour movie. And besides, every Marvel character can't have a movie. I think when it comes to DD, a tv show is the way to go.

I see your logic about being able to flesh out a character better as well as the fact that not all characters will make it to the movies. But I think Daredevil is awesome and is one character who does deserve a proper big screen treatment. Especially after the way Fox handled his and Elektra's first movies.

Hey Roach, would your take on Cage fit in a darker Marvel Knights universe or is it MCU material?

Also, I now dub the non-existent but possible Marvel Knights Universe the MKU.

I would love to go darker with Cage but they want to bring him into the Avengers so it has to fit the same format as the other films.

Also some guys I went to school with did a short based on Miles Morales and it has inspired me to pursue a short based on Black Panther...I am about to get with some friends and acquaintances and see if my vision can be put to film.

Should we start an official "Countdown Til Daredevil Reverts" thread? LOL

I'm down for this whole MKU idea. They can go street level crime fighters and even supernatural/monster fighters.

My choices:
Marvel Knights- Daredevil, Punisher, Moon Knight, Cloak, and Dagger

Midnight Sons- Werewolf by Night, Man-Thing, Blade, and Ghost Rider (assuming they get his rights back...which they will before long)

I really hope that FOX just wait for the rights to revert to FOX.

FOX should just prioritize X-Men and Fantastic Four. Let Daredevil go back to Marvel.

Good choices. I'd throw Dr. Strange in there somewhere too.

I'm surprised Fox hasn't crapped out another FF in order to keep the rights.

What I want to know how far is it and why the deals were written with these large windows?

I mean, New Line Cinema were unable to put together Iron Man for example. So that deal had to expire like in 2005 or 2006 at some point. Why does Fox get such a long time for Fantastic Four?

It all depends on what the wording of the contracts were. It was different with each company and with each property. Fox must have wanted a 7 year window. It appears that New Line or Universal for examples had much smaller windows.

Movies take a long time to make, especially if you're a big studio corporation that isn't focused on specifically making superhero movies. Keep in mind, these deals were made before the superhero movie boom of the 2000s, and during a time when Arad was doing whatever he could to keep Marvel afloat financially. Fox and Universal were probably able to get those large windows because not even Marvel was sure how quickly one could develop a superhero movie based on an unproven commodity like Iron Man at the time.

Their deadline to start production is 2015 ?:wow: How in the hell is that even possible?

I thought 2015 was the release date they were aiming for. My guess is that their deadline to start production is in 2014--7 years after FF:ROTSS came out. It syncs with what is Daredevil's apparent deadline.

Yeah it seems they want Trank's F4 film for summer 2015, which would mean filming in late 2013 or sometime in 2014

these contracts with large windows is what kept Marvel afloat

Yeah yeah yeah roach, but now we are talking a like close to 10 years without any movement on these franchises.

It was NOT that long for Iron Man and Hulk licenses to revert to Marvel.

It's pretty obvious that Fox does not want a competitor to make money off a license they once had. It would be embarrassing just like when the Watchmen movie got made and they sued WB over the film rights even though Fox never really had any intention of actually making Watchmen into a movie.

The last Daredevil movie was over 9 years ago. Elektra, a Daredevil spinoff came out like 7 and a half years ago.

I won't pretend to know whats going on in people's heads...obviously Fox has the rights and its legal or Disney would have been all over it. Remember when Disney bought Marvel their mouse lawyers went over the contracts with the other companies.
