Darren Bousman Directed 'Mother's Day' Gets Greenlit!
Testify! Some pretty huge news comes just in time for Mother's Day as Twisted Pictures, the Genre Co. and Rat Entertainment have lined up a financing deal with LightTower Entertainment to remake Charles Kaufman's 1980 Troma cult classic Mother's Day. Darren Lynn Bousman, who has helmed three films in the Saw franchise and the culty horror-musical Repo! The Genetic Opera, is attached to direct from a script by Scott Milam! Read on for all the juicy details.

The original "Mother's Day" revolved around three female friends who, while camping, run afoul of two brothers who engage in murder and rape to impress their deranged mother. The remake sees the villainous family return to the house where they grew up and terrorize the new owners and their guests.

"We're taking the iconic image of a mother, the most comforting and nurturing person in the world, and perverting that into something that is punishing and sadistic," Genre's Richard Saperstein said.

He added that the remake will be timely, reflecting today's foreclosures and tough economic times. "She's lost her house," Saperstein said. "Her boys are going to get it back to her."

Saperstein is producing with Genre's Brian Witten. "Saw" producers Mark Burg, Oren Koules and Carl Mazzocone also are producing, as are Brett Ratner and Jay Stern through Rat Entertainment.

LightTower partners Jonathan Zucker and Curtis Leopardo are executive producers on the project. Kaufman and Troma Entertainment co-founder Lloyd Kaufman also will exec produce, as will Genre's Stephen Kessler. Shara Kay will co-produce. Jessie Rusu is an associate producer.

The producers are eyeing a July start and a spring release timed for Mother's Day 2010.

Saperstein acknowledged that many horror movies are seeing their tone informed by last year's surprise hit "The Strangers." He said the tone of the "Mother's Day" remake "will be post-'Strangers' in that is has very realistic qualities but has a high-concept overlay, this punishing maternal figure."

The original "Mother's Day" revolved around three female friends who, while camping, run afoul of two brothers who engage in murder and rape to impress their deranged mother. The original "Mother's Day" revolved around three female friends who, while camping, run afoul of two brothers who engage in murder and rape to impress their deranged mother. The remake sees the villainous family return to the house where they grew up and terrorize the new owners and their guests.
Working Synopsis for 'Mother's Day'
We got our hands on the working synopsis for Mother's Day, which is being directed by Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw II-IV, Repo) from a screenplay by Scott Milam. Three brothers on the run from the law head for home, only to discover that their mother lost the house in a foreclosure. Mother ingeniously orchestrates her sons' escape, teaching the house's new owners and their guests a few lessons along the way. Shooting is set to begin this September in Manitoba, Canada. Casting is underway.
What's the Plan For the 'Mother's Day' Remake?
At the San Diego Comic Con we caught up with Darren Lynn Bousman, director of Saw II-IV and Repo! The Genetic Opera, who was on hand to announce his new comic-to-screen venture Abattoir (read more about it here). Below the break you can read our exclusive interview where he talks about Mother's Day, his remake of the classic Troma movie going into production this September.

"We are in active preproduction in Winnipeg," Bousman tels Bloody-Disgusting. "Production designer has started, storyboards are being drawn, casting well underway! We go to camera September 7th."

He talks a bit about how this is going to be way different than the original Troma film from 1980. "This film is more along the lines of Cape Fear. The original 1980 Mother's Day was a movie for its time. I love it. But that movie would not work now. The thing about the original is everyone has copied, stolen, and borrowed from it countless times," he explains talking about his intent to make something original. "I am not one to rehash, or retread the same idea. What I loved about the original film was the psychology of this crazy mother and the power she had over her two out of control sons. There was a lot of social statements hidden in that film. It was actually quite brilliant. We are doing a modern version of that with this script. It's darker, more ****ed up, more out of control. While it's its own movie, there are tons of similarities to the original film. You can bet the farm, Mother, Ike and Addley are up to some sick ****...this is not the 1980 Charlie Kaufman's version!"

The screenplay was written by Scott Milam, who is a long time friend of Bousmans. "Scott is one of my favorite writers. We have been working on numerous projects over the last couple of years. When Mother's Day was brought to us, we used a lot of the ideas from various projects that never got made. What that turned into was one of the most ****ed up and intense scripts I have read. Scott and I were both fans of the original so it was easy to use our ideas and shape them into what would become Mother's Day. Scott and I work very well together. Mother's Day is only the first of a long line of Milam/Bousman projects," he reveals.

So the question remains, is this going to be fun, violent or both?

"My hope is a mixture of both. This is very dark material. But, that being said, it's about the Mother and her murderous children; the concept itself is pretty funny, so there will be a mixture of dark humor. The original film was equally horrific as it was funny. I think we are aiming to be a little darker..."

Bousman tells B-D that the plan is to release Mother's Day in theaters on Mother's Day in 2010.

'True Blood' Cutie Plans For 'Mother's Day'
After spending an hour Sunday night wooing over "Jessica" in HBO's vampire drama "True Blood" (and then watching people tweet about how hot she is), it's exciting news to hear that Deborah Ann Woll will be starring in Mother's Day, the remake of Charles Kaufman's 1980 Troma cult classic being directed by Darren Lynn Bousman. The original "Mother's Day" revolved around three female friends who, while camping, run afoul of two brothers who engage in murder and rape to impress their deranged mother. The remake sees the villainous family, slightly expanded to include a daughter (Woll), return to the house where they grew up and terrorize the new owners and their guests. The makers are eyeing a spring release timed for Mother's Day with a shoot to begin in the fall in Manitoba.
Bousman Reunites With Two Lovely Ladies For 'Mother's Day', MORE!
Update: EVEN MORE casting inside! Two of Darren Lynn Bousman's proteges have rejoined him for his forthcoming remake of Mother's Day. Alexa Vega, who played Shilo in Bousman's Repo! The Genetic Opera, and Briana Evigan, who starred in his Fear Itself episode "New Year's Day", have both joined the previously announced Deborah Ann Woll ("True Blood") in the remake of the classic Troma movie from 1980, reports Dread Central. Shooting begins this month in Winnipeg, Canada. Evigan can be seen in Summit's Sorority Row later this month. In the Scott Milam scripted remake, three brothers on the run from the law head for home, only to discover that their mother lost the house in a foreclosure. Mother ingeniously orchestrates her sons' escape, teaching the house's new owners and their guests a few lessons along the way.

Jaime King (The Tripper, My Bloody Valentine 3D) has her cards and flowers ready for "Mother's Day," Darren Lynn Bousman's remake of Charles Kaufman's 1980 Troma cult classic, and Shawn Ashmore (The Ruins, Frozen), Briana Evigan, Alexa Vega and Matt O'Leary (who stars alongside Briana in Sorority Row next month) are in talks to join the production, writes the Hollywood Reporter.

King will play the woman of the house, a wife who has lost her child and is isolating herself from her husband.

Ashmore and Evigan will play guests at the house. O'Leary ("CSI") is one of Mother's sons, joining the already cast Deborah Ann Woll as members of the family.

"What we're trying to do is elevate this outside of a genre movie," Bousman said. "I've done three 'Saw' films, I've done 'Repo,' and yes, this is horrific at times, but it's much darker and deeper because of the focus on the characters."

The Genre Co. and Rat Entertainment are producing the remake, and LightTower Entertainment is financing. A spring release timed to Mother's Day is being eyed, with shooting set to begin next month in Winnipeg.
Rebecca DeMornay Your 'Mother's Day' Mom!
Bloody Disgusting learned tonight exclusively that Rebecca DeMornay (Identity, "The Shining" mini-series) has been tapped to topline Darren Lynn Bousman's MOTHER'S DAY, which begins lensing next week in Winnipeg, Canada. She will play the mother. She stars alongside the previously announced Deborah Ann Woll, Briana Evigan, Alexa Vega, Shawn Ashmore, Matt O'Leary, Lyriq Bent and Lisa Marcos. Written by Scott Milam, the remake of the classic 80's Troma film follows three brothers on the run from the law head for home, only to discover that their mother lost the house in a foreclosure. Mother ingeniously orchestrates her sons' escape, teaching the house's new owners and their guests a few lessons along the way.

I've liked all his moves so far and I don'tr like musicals much, but liked Repo and his Zombie Ep of the short lived series Fear Its self.

I really, really don't think this movie needs to be remade.

Yet More 'Mother's Day' Casting...

How many people are in this movie anyway? Even without reading a synopsis, the sheer number of actors being hired (with more to come!) should tell you that Darren Bousman's "remake" of Mother's Day is a completely different beast, as that film only had like six people in it. Well now you can add another name to the list: Bousman just announced via his Twitter page that AJ Cook (pictured inside) has joined the cast as well. You might remember her as the heroine from Final Destination 2. She joins previously announced Rebecca DeMornay, Lyriq Bent, Briana Evigan, Alexa Vega, Jaime King, Matt O'Leary, Shawn Ashmore... and I think a dozen others. But hey, more characters = more kills, right? Sweet.
