I don’t understand something.

David Julyan scored Memento, Insomnia, and now he just finished the score for The Prestige, which are ALL Christopher Nolan films. However, when it comes to Batman Begins, Nolan wants nothing to do Julyan. WHY? I think David Julyan is just as talented, if not MORE talented than Zimmer and Howard. He would create such an awesome score for The Dark Knight, but instead, Zimmer is back.

It SICKENS me that Hans Zimmer is returning. His music in Batman Begins was so GENERIC, and could’ve been thrown into ANY Jerry Bruckheimer/Michael Bay movie. Batman had no THEME!!!

However, David Julyan’s music is so EMOTIONAL, so moody and DARK, and it’s exactly what Batman is supposed to be. Batman’s music isn’t about action and over-the-topness. It’s about DARKNESS. It’s like he creates “beautiful evilness”.

Listen to David Julyan’s work for Nolan’s movies. He also scored The Descent, and he did an excellent on that too.

After hearing those samples… you’re telling me that David Julyan isn’t capable of scoring The Dark Knight?? YOU’VE GOT TO BE KIDDING.

Nolan needs to stick to his crew here. Julyan KNOWS Nolan, and when he scores his movies, he UNDERSTANDS what Nolan is doing and it’s therefore easier for him to score his films. He makes music that is exactly what Nolan is feeling when he’s directing. I can’t even imagine what Julyan would do with a Batman movie. It gives me goosebumps just thinking about it.

Nolan + Julyan = The Only Way To Go!!!

I loved Howard&Zimmer's music better, but Jolyan made very good score in Memento. So I'd like to see him in working on TDK with Howard and Zimmer.

If I had to "pair up" anybody, it would be David Julyan and James Newton Howard together. Zimmer wouldn't be anywhere near this.

However, I think David Julyan could do it all on his own. Seriously. I think Nolan or WB (or whoever) should give him a chance. I think he could make something incredible.

Putting every third word in caps doesn't make it any more sensible. Nolan has the talent he wants for TDK.

I suspect Zimmer involvement must have some kind of studio pressure behind. I´d also love to hear Julyan´s take.

Be tough to say how David scores action scenes as he hasn't really done any. His momento score is very nice however

Wow. Thanks for making me feel better about Zimmer and Howard returning.

I do agree that Batman needs more of a theme than two brass chords. That said, those clips don't do anything to convince me he's capable of making a strong theme for him.

I remember before Zimmer and Howard were chosen the rumour was David would do the score and many were not happy with that

wow...

i think that the two oscar winning composers is better than some guy i havn't heard of..

James Newton Howard has never won an oscar.

I like both Julyan and Howard as composers, while Zimmer had his moments.

I'm not taking anything away from Hans, but I thought the best parts of the Batman Begins soundtrack was the quiet Howard moments. Zimmer did a good job on his part, but it just sounds...'Zimmer-esq' and it borders on greatness and being generic.

Honestly, I've never been impressed with Julyan's scores. Even if I did have a problem with Howard and Zimmer (which I really don't), I don't think I'd want him for the picture.

Batman Begins didn't need a theme (though now he might have to have one for the continuing series). It relied on atmosphere. So, to even suggest it needed one, you obviously missed the point of what they were going for.

I loved the score from BB so for continuity reasons i say keep the same composers. Still i find it a little odd that Julyan didn't work on that film since he's done all of Nolan's other films (incl The Prestige). Is it possible that the Zimmer/Newton-Howard combo was a studio decision?

Heres a interview by AICN with David Julyan from December with some interesting answers.

SK: Were you ever considered for BATMAN BEGINS (2005)? One can only assume you have a great creative relationship with Chris Nolan. It surprised me when I saw that you were not hired to score that film.

DJ: That’s not really a question for me.

SK: Any chance you’ll be working on THE DARK KNIGHT (2008)?

DJ: That’s a way off. Time will tell.

I thought Zimmer/Howard was perfect. There score while not as distinct as Elfman's reflected the ferocity and threatening quality of Nolan's Batman perfectly.

^ The studio wanted Zimmer & Howard. I know some people are not impressed with Julyan's music, but he could have done a great job with Batman Begins because of the pressure. The reason Danny Elfman's music for Batman was so great was because he was convinced he would get fired if he didn't do something great. He kind of confirms that on the DVD.

Sometimes i'd really like to be a fly on a wall to see the real off-screen drama that happens on some movies.:ninja:

They basically never approached Julyan which is very strange since he did Nolan's pre- and post-Batman movies (Insomnia and The Prestige).By the looks he won't be doing TDK either.

the score that howard and zimmer created..worked for the movie in a good way.. it didn't over power what the film was about..but it created a sound that works well in the Batman universe.

i always wanted shirly walkers theme from the animated to be used in a movie version..because its very good.

Apprently David Julyan Agent frequent the SHH boards to try and get work for his client. :whatever:

I actually agree with TempleFugit this time, Zimmer can be great but I don't think he had the right idea for Begins. Julyan has been consistently amazing and he's not as overbearing as Zimmer, I was suprised when Nolan announced Zimmer/Howard, Julyan's atmospheric scores are perfect for TDK.
