Now it's finally official.

David Leitch ('John Wick') is directing 'Deadpool 2'! :hmr:

Leitch beat out a host of competitors that included the likes of Drew Goddard and Magnus Martens after Deadpool director Tim Miller departed the superhero sequel over creative differences in late-October. Leitch spent more than 20 years as a stunt coordinator and stuntman before he teamed as a director with Chad Stahelski on John Wick. The Keanu Reeves-starring neo noir action pic went on to earn $86 million on a $20 million budget but became an instant cult favorite. A sequel directed by Stahelski hits theaters February 10.
Leitch’s experience on John Wick makes him a good fit on Deadpool 2. Uncomfirmed reports hold that Miller and Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds parted ways over the tone and scale of the sequel. Word is Reynolds preferred to stick with the R-rated, lower-budget approach to the first installment, which was made for $58 million and went on to earn nearly 13 times that amount.
Leitch’s next directorial effort is the spy thriller The Coldest City, starring Charlize Theron, James McAvoy, John Goodman and Sofia Boutella. It’s due in theaters July 28. He’s repped by WME, Kelly McCormick and Gang Tyre.

ORIGINAL REPORT:
David Leitch, one half of the directing and stunt team behind the John Wick movies, has emerged as the frontrunner to direct Fox’s Deadpool 2.
The move happens about a week after the sequel to the surprise Ryan Reynolds hit lost its director, Tim Miller, over “creative differences.”
Miller’s exit late last week caught many by surprise. The filmmaker made his feature directorial debut with the movie and was considered a key figure in the movie’s gargantuan success along with writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick and Reynolds, of course.
But sources said differences between Miller and Reynolds surfaced during the first movie, and while they were smoothed over, they resurfaced again during the sequel’s development.
Leitch's name first emerged Monday, but insiders said the studio and producers were meeting with other potential candidates. Drew Goddard and Magnus Martens, a director on Marvel's Netflix series Luke Cage, were other filmmakers mentioned on the studio's meeting list. But Leitch's name remained consistently on top of the list and the director met with Reynolds in New York on Thursday, according to sources.
Other sources say it's still too early to declare Leitch a frontrunner as other meetings are still taking place. No official offer has been made and no negotiations are underway.
Leitch is well known in the action movie world and is partners with Chad Stahelski the stunt company 87eleven They worked as a second unit directors on action movies ranging from Ninja Assassin to Captain America: Civil War and made their directorial debut with the well regarded Keanu Reeves action movie John Wick.
Leitch did not direct the sequel but recently finished shooting The Coldest City, a Cold War thriller starring Charlize Theron.

God Jeff Sneider is insufferable. No one cares who got the scoop.

That being said, this is quite comforting news. Definitely a good choice.

The whole "scoop" stuff is pathetic.

But Leitch is a good choice. Looking forward to it

My problem with the whole entertainment scoop culture is how touchy, hyper-sensitive egotistical and narcissistic everyone is about it. Like it's some sort of dumb popularity contest.

Granted, some followers do enable that behavior, but yeah, it's stilly.

Yeah, b/c David Leitch is not confirmed (unfortunately).
It seems like he's made a great impression on the studio and is the frontrunner, but has not been offered the job yet, as they will be meeting with other directors (incl. Drew Goddard and TV director Magnus Martens), too.

And yep, Sneider should get his ego under control. But lots of 'scoopers' seem to have a pretty big ego. On the other side, Collider's Steven Weintraub seems to be a pretty humble dude, and does gets some pretty good exclusives and interviews.

Drew Goddard is a good writer in his own right, but the fact that he's a writer could mean greater risk for creative differences than Miller had.

While John Wick's form of stylized action wouldn't be right for Deadpool, he's worked on a large number of action films to know what is needed for a Deadpool movie. And he seems like the kind of guy who respects the writing so he doesn't seem like he'll argue too much.

LOL after all that! "IT'S OFFICIAL! REMEMBER YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST!"

What a Dose of 'John Wick' Could Bring to 'Deadpool 2'

Director David Leitch is the frontrunner to direct the sequel — and that raises a lot of questions.

Deadpool fans have been on an emotional rollercoaster — first mourning the breakup of star Ryan Reynolds and director Tim Miller, and now riding high on the possibility that another filmmaker whose work they love will be stepping in.
John Wick's David Leitch is being eyed to direct the second Deadpool film, and the filmmaker met with Reynolds on Thursday to discuss it. The possibility makes a lot of sense – and raises a few questions. Let's get into it.

Wick is a favorite in the fanboy community.
Leitch, who co-directed the first installment and is directing John Wick: Chapter 2, brought down the house at New York Comic Con, with his movie inspiring pandemonium on a scale unmatched by other film projects there. (The first Deadpool trailer inspired the same reaction at San Diego Comic-Con in 2015.) The John Wick team has also helped out with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Leitch and John Wick co-director Chad Stahelski directing second unit scenes for Captain America: Civil War. Stahelski also did some work on Iron Man 2 (but don't hold that against him).

But what about those realistic fights?
In a world where CGI can have a negative connotation and practical effects are all the rage, fans flocked to John Wick for its brutal and realistic fights. But they also flocked to Deadpool, which was totally not that. Deadpool prided itself on its absurd, heightened reality and it looked spectacular embracing just that. It was violent and bloody, but it did not attempt to be grounded in realism as John Wick was.

A VFX reel (above) shows how the famous highway chase scene was created (with a lot of masterful CGI). Deadpool, of course, still had dozens of stunt performers doing death-defying work, but aesthetically, it's very different than Wick, whose star Keanu Reeves has touted gun-fu training (no CGI required). In a wonderful coincidence, there's a cool video of Reeves training for John Wick 2, set to DMX's "X Gon' Give It To Ya," which was used prominently in Deadpool's marketing.

What does this mean for Cable?
The post-credits scene of Deadpool revealed that 90s comic fan favorite character Cable will be involved in the sequel. Like Deadpool, he's one of a small number of comic book heroes whose primary weapon of choice is the gun. No actor has been set for the character, but it looks like some gun-fu training may be in store. But question: What will Leitch do with Cable's guns (who ... yes, have guns of their own)?

I think this would be a safe choice to make & it'd certainly put me at ease for this to be the case. Leitch would be more than competent enough to handle DP 2.

Good pick, John Wick was great.

And yes hope they move forward on Gambit soon.

And by the way, it seems like David Leitch may also be into comics, as he and Chad Stahelski were influenced by the style of graphic novels for John Wick and his follow-up movie The Coldest City (in theaters next summer) is based on one.

He does have experience with the X-Men world as well, working on Origins and The Wolverine. It's interesting to note that Heat Vision says that they want different directors handling each Deadpool installment though.

Gambit will exist as long as Chan's passion is there, so I'm sure we'll get there eventually. Not in a rush though.

That's fair. So long as the writing team is intact.

And now that's official and set in stone, this feels appropriate:

Hesitant on how he handles the comedic interplay, but the action will be top-notch.

 for those who want to keep this fresh by doing various takes on Deadpool

John Wick had a very subtle, but incredibly efficient layer of humour. Not worried at all about how he handles comedic interplay. And I'm not worried at all about how he handles characters and performances, as both were top notch in his debut.

I wasn't impressed by John Wick, so it doesn't make me feel confident. Don't cast Sofia Boutella as Domino, at least.

Characters and performances, sure. That's also what he has over Miller.
Still not sold on a different kind of humor.
