I've been anticipating this film for the longest time. This film is one that can benefit from being remade. The idea can be every bit as interesting and groundbreaking now as it was back then, and can actually exceed the original. Replace the dated Cold War idea with the protection of the environment and the survival of Earth from our own shortsightedness of the use of resources.

Here is how I stand with the original. Back then, it was groundbreaking, and it was a major contribution to the science fiction genre, as well as social commentary of the Cold War, and the destruction that could come from a nuclear war. The film is a classic, a critical masterpiece, and one of the best science fiction films ever made.

However, the very core concept is interesting and timeless. This film could be remade again fifty years from now, and it'd still be fresh, unique, and groundbreaking for the audiences of that time because the core concept never really gets stale or cliche. I look forward to this remake because the already great original can actually benefit from being remade today. You won't see me damn any film just because it is a remake (of whatever film) until I see the final product.
