I'd like to read the original Claremont/Byrne X-Men Days of Future Past. However I've read DC pretty exclusively for years and haven't picked up an X-Men comic since probably around 1980.

Do I need knowledge of any earlier storylines to understand and appreciate DoFP, or does it read okay as a standalone?

Not really. It is actually a fairly good starting spot, if I am remembering correctly.

Yeah, it actually is a pretty good introduction, since it has Kitty's first Danger Room test. I remember that part was used in some other X-men product to give some background.

Were there ever any direct sequels to DoFP?

Jean Grey had just died and DoFP served as the start of a new status quo.

Thanks - was it an 'event comic' with an impact across Marvel comics as a whole, or were its effects pretty much confined to the X-Men stories?

DOFP wasn't an "event comic", it was mostly contained to two issues. Pretty self-contained aside from being told what happens to the other Marvel heroes in the future timeline.

That sounds ideal actually. Thanks.

It's pretty much a "stand alone" story, not like their arcs that go through multiple titles.

definitely worth the read.

Though one of the future characters does come back to the past and join the X-men before the sequel.

There's also Days of Futures Yet to Come in Excalibur. But I'd definitely not recommend treating the sequels as self-contained.

Days of Future Past/Mind Out of Time are a great two-part standalone story. I agree with the idea that it makes a good intro. The biggest reason not to do that is because you'd be missing out on the great Dark Phoenix Saga.

Thanks both.

DPS is great but if he just wants DoFP, its fine to just start with that. DPS really requires nearly 4 years worth of comics to enjoy (Uncanny X-men 98-138)

Yeah, I'd definitely start with the All-New, All-Different X-Men (either the Giant Size or the first Claremont issue) if you're going Dark Phoenix. It's really interesting watching the book evolve and there's a lot of fun stuff. But while that stuff is a transition, the book has transformed by DoFP.

I think it's also one of the first Marvel comics that started the trend 'Every Furture the X-Men have is ****".
