He wasn't slipping, it was deliberate. Vaughn liked Fass's natural accent and wanted him to use it more.
I think part of the idea was to show how much Erik was traveling, he didn't have one defined accent, he rolled between different ones without even noticing, English, Irish, French, German, etc. But in DOFP he's settling toward the Magneto we know from the trilogy.

First I've heard of this.

Yeah, but when he is shown having the one accent when speaking English up until that last scene on the beach this 'he has picked up accents as he travelled' stuff doesn't really work at all.

That's requiring total presumption from the audience. Show, or at least tell. Don't just have him shift into a decidedly Irish lilt for his big speech in the films finale with zero explanation for it beforehand.

If it bothered no-one else, that's fine, but being half Irish myself I thought it was a sloppy distraction to allow (knowing now it was deliberate I think it was just a daft and pointless choice).

First I've heard of this.

Same here. I recall him saying he chose it, trying to make it his own voice but with as 'neutral' an accent (taking the 'oirish' twang out of it) as he could manage.

Ah, found the quote I remember reading:

"I'm kind of using my own accent and taking out as much Irish-ness as I can. People always say that I sound anything but Irish... most people say to me Canadian, or people have said Dutch, German, South African.

What do you do with the accent? Because he's not English and he didn't really have any sort of history in England. But I think he is well-educated... so I'm just trying to play a more neutral version of my own accent."

Fass sounded almost American to me in some scenes of FC.

Btw, I'm from London, but Americans have confused me for Australian...Not amused...:cwink:

Londoners don't sound like Dick Van Dyke FFS (worst 'cockerny' accent ever, closely followed by Don Cheadle's in Oceans 11)

It's funny how I keep seeing UK people calling McAvoy's American accent "crap", while Americans themselves seem to think he's got an amazing American accent.

I think that James is really brilliant at accents, but then I'm not a specialist. He just sounds right to me - his Irish accent, for example, sounds amazing. I loved his Charles voice in FC, and I'm curious to know how he will sound in DoFP, because Charles seems to have lost some of the British accent's "poshness" from First Class.

They all sound alike to us. I'm not even being a smart ass, they really do, but to them there are like hundreds of inflections we don't even notice.

Happy to hear Fass is studying McKellen's accent this time around. The Irish accent on the beach was incredibly distracting, a smear on an otherwise fantastic performance.

Same here. Even in interviews his accent is almost undetectable. On the same token, Ian's accent's actually quite Americanized, too.

Well, I imagine for a guy who speaks at least three different languages fluently - not including native English as well, of course - who also has to consider and incorporate elements of an inconic portrayal, it's got to be a bit difficult. But I didn't notice it all that much and when I did, it certainly didn't bother me. It was an incredible performance.

Yeah, his performance was great. I loved the scene where he takes the brace of the French guy's tooth, and the bar scene.

Two of my favorite Magneto-centric scenes as well. I also loved his whole bit with Shaw in the finale.

I can't wait to see him deliver some more famous Magneto monologues in DoFP, especially with a bit more Ian in his delivery.

Oh God. That brings me back memories of the coin through the head thing. Painful to watch but awesomely badass.

Such a ballsy thing to pull off in a PG-13 movie. But speaking of the coin, I wonder, since its left to the helmet in the showcases, if Magneto breaks that out of the case, too. It'd make for a neat connection - similar to Wolverine's dog tags - and would be great if we get a scene of Magneto holding it in his hand in the future, perhaps dropping it to symbolize his change of heart.

Yeah, but at least they're American's playing English so I give 'em a bit of leeway. Charlie Hunnam's accent in Green Street is right up there with the worst of 'em; and he's English.

That's true. I forgot about Hunnam's Green Street accent. Definitely up there in the hall of shame.

That would make for a neat moment, though I kinda feel he was done with the coin once he had his revenge. That symbolised his hatred for Shaw (a fellow Mutant) not his rage against humans.

It kind of was his rage against humans tho. Despite Shaw being a mutant, Shaw was kind of the face of the Holocaust for him, the face of what he was fighting against. Even Xavier made mention to him that "you think they are all like Shaw".

I seriously hope the reports of a TW sequel aren't true. We DON'T need a prequel to DOFP set between TW main plot and the credit scene. It is redundant with the timeline being altered. In fact we DON'T need another Wolverine spin-off at all. Ever. Enough is enough. Stop overusing his character.

Time to concentrate on sequels to FC/OT. Or the X-Force etc. No more Wolverine solo outings. His character is beyond tapped out for material. He should only ever appear in ensembles from now on. I am praying that's just media gossip because I will actually be a little angry if he gets another movie when the others have so much left to offer.

Maybe this could lead to Hugh finally stopping playing him after his trilogy, so next team movies wont have Wolverine. Xforce, Fc sequel and next proyects

You do know that studios can do multiple movies at the same time?

It's not going to hurt to get another Wolverine movie in addition to a First Class sequel, X-Force and Deadpool. If Fox is really going to follow through with expanding their X-Men universe than another Wolverine movie is great because he's come across a TON of characters and villains that may work better being introduced in smaller, more intimate Wolvie movie THAN have them move across into other crossovers with other movies.

Characters and teams like Alpha Flight, Omega Red and Wendigo have way more room to breath and be fleshed out as characters in a solo Wolvie movie than a X-Men team movie.

I think it's a smart idea.

He doesn't need or warrant a Wolverine trilogy. Isn't 2 spin-off's, 7 movies in total and possible ensemble sequels more than enough already?

It's getting ridiculous how much they are milking his character. I was fine was him getting the TW sequel and even being the biggest character in DOFP. But a third solo movie is going too far. Way too far.

Save the money and time, put it into making a sequel to DOFP for the two ensemble groups. Or the X-Force spin-off's. Even give a solo movie to one of the others. I just don't want or need another Wolverine movie. I'm getting really tired of everything revolving around him :whatever:

With the timeline getting altered to at least some degree a prequel to DOFP is the most redundant and dumb idea ever. FC are different as they'd be following the new timeline (not that I'm a fan of them), but to have a sequel to TW is stupid. It wouldn't even be relevant to the franchise post DOFP. Fox, get a brain and don't do it.

:down

Deal with it bub. The Wolverine was awesome, people went to see it and keeping Mangold in the game is a good thing. This can also make way for other X-Men characters to have more screen time in X-Men films.

its easier for fox to hire jackman and get a few new actors in that won't ask for alot of money and make good at the box office, thats pretty much the angle they wanted to go with in Origins

the fact that they already might be planning a wolverine movie first before anything else... meh! one thing they are confident about is wolverines role
